Peaceful Warrior is a 2006 drama film starring Scott Mechlowicz, Nick Nolte, and Amy Smart. Released on June 2, 2006, it is based on the novel Way of the Peaceful Warrior by Dan Millman. Director Victor Salva first became familiar with the work while in prison for child molestation, and he credits it with being "a story that changed my life."

The film takes place at U.C. Berkeley, and features a troubled but talented gymnast who meets a spiritual guide.

Here's a copy of my review from it's initial release last summer from over in the wilds of the Foreign & Independent Film forum. As you'll note from my sig, it ended up on my 2006 Top Ten List...

Quote:
Before I begin my review, I'd like to acknowledge the fact that there are many people who are not open to the type of self-empowerment philosophy demonstrated in this film. Worse, there are some who are downright hostile* towards it. But, of course, that's okay. If either of those is the case with you, simply let the movie and my review of it pass by you into your past.

For those interested in Peaceful Warrior and it's story of a way of life -- well you're in luck -- it's a great movie! Extremely well told tale of a young man finding his path through the mentoring of an older man. The philosophy is delivered au naturel by Nick Nolte (figuratively speaking, thank goodness) and wrestled with by Scott Mechlowicz portraying real life gymnast and subsequent author Dan Millman.

I can honestly imagine the truths stated in the movie sounding like Chicken Soup platitudes to the uninitiated (such as Bradley 1.0), but it actually displays hidden depths to those willing to listen.

And if that isn't enough to put 90% of readers of this thread off seeing the film - how about this... It'd make a tremendous double bill with this year's other superb gymnastic philosophy movie - Stick It!

Let the corporate media critics negative reviews float past you in the great river of movie viewing, and give yourself the chance to choose whether to follow this stream...

7 out of 5.

(*For example, any of you who have a fierce hate on for What the #$*! Do We (K)now!? --> I highly recommend that you stay away from this film! And treat yourselves to some anger management counselling, if at all possible... ;) )

I hated What the Bleep Do We Know, even though I was watching it in the very theater it was filmed in at one point. However, and maybe it was to some extent due to the excellent herb from earlier in the evening, I thought this was the most under-rated film of 2006. You're either going to be sucked into this and go with what it's preaching or you won't, and had I not been, I suppose I can understand how one would view it as pretensious and over-dramatic. For me, I thought it was an excellent, persuasive way of explaining "The Secret" of sorts. It's certainly something I could believe and would like to explore further, so the film really did do it's job as well as it could. The lead and Nolte were both great, the camera work and editing were superb, but what really made this such an empowering experience for me was the film's great choice in showing, not telling. I'll need to watch this film again in a clearer state of mind, but in all honestly if I were going to give it a grade right now I'd be tempted to go with either an A or A+.

I hated What the #$*! Do We Know!? (left the theatre halfway through), so I'm wary of this film, though I'll see it on DVD for the cast.
