 Shut Up and Sing Shut Up and Sing Quote: Dixie Chicks: Shut Up and Sing (also known simply as Shut Up and Sing) is a 2006 documentary film produced and directed by Academy Award-winning director Barbara Kopple and Cecilia Peck (daughter of famed actor Gregory Peck).
The film follows the Dixie Chicks, an extremely successful all-woman Texas-based country music trio, over a three year period of intense public scrutiny, fan backlash, physical threats, and pressure from both corporate and conservative political elements in the United States after lead singer Natalie Maines publicly criticised then President of the United States George W. Bush during a live 2003 concert in London as part of their Top of the World Tour.
It is the first Rated R project by the Dixie Chicks.

I haven't seen a lot of documentaries from last year, but this is probably the best doc I've seen from 2006. Funny, sad, compelling, and works as a cultural study, behind the scenes look at the music world and a portrait of three wonderful ladies. Great.

I think this is a great portrayal of what will surely be an important story in rock and roll history. The Dixie Chicks were ostracized and BRANDED (in the year 2003!) for making what seemed to be an innocuous comment. I guess it just goes to show the possible repercussions of fucking with the nation's collective conscious.
The film is also surprisingly emotional, with heavy backstage access into the Chicks' personal lives. That scene where Natalie Maines is walking towards the stage to perform after receiving a death-threat is probably one of the most moving scenes I've seen in a movie in a while.

The best documentary of 2006. This is a really great look into what happened to the Dixie Chicks, with some great music to go along with it.

I agree. Best documentary of last year.
It's not as incisive as it could be, I think. I would've liked to have seen more of Emily's and Martie's actual thoughts on what happened, other than that, yes, they stand by Natalie. The scene at the end where Martie breaks down is as far as the film takes it, really (but it is a great scene, nonetheless).
Other than that, though, it's really entertaining, and got me truly riled up for both their cause, as well as their music, for which I have a new appreciation.
In my top 10 of last year. A-
More people need to see this.

And it's really a shame this didn't score an Oscar nom.
Politically, it pretty much falls in line with the liberal line-up of docs they awarded this year, and in comparison to what I've seen, it's superior to both An Inconvenient Truth AND Jesus Camp.

I also believe it to be the best documentary of 2006. Although I do like Jesus Camp I think this easily deserved a nomination over that.

I loved it! It's the best documentary of 2006. I highly, highly recommend seeing it. I too gained a new appreciation for them and their music. It deserved an Oscar nomination and it deserves to be seen by more but because of that BS deal with Blockbuster that the Weinstein company has it won't be seen by enough.

Being a long time fan of the Dixie Chicks, I found this documentary very interesting. It's worth a look, even if you don't agree with what they say. B

I'm proud of the girls. I'm glad they did what they did, because I wouldn't have heard the best song ever.
