I can't say enough about this movie. I've never laughed so hard in my life. Hank Azaria in that film is pure genious. Probably one of my favorite comedies of all-time.A+

I am agreeing with everyone up here, a great movie. One of the funniest films ever, and I am really looking forward to Nathan Lane in the Producers (because someone can't get tickets to Broadway).

Sheer Comedy brilliance I don't think i'd ever get tired of watching it. Nathan Lane can raise a laugh by just doing nothing he's that good in this.

Watched this for the thousandth time tonight. It's so. damn. funny. Although I really like the French original, the rich, saturated colors of Lubezki's photography, the brilliance of Lane, and the relentless satire are just.... perfect. Every performer nails their role, ever scene is perfectly staged and executed... this is one of the best comedies of all time and proof that a remake can be excellent.

****/****

(I think that the problem with the original I have is actually with the DVD, actually - the subtitles butcher the script based upon translations I've read online and it just looses the charm and wit that this update has).

Great cast, ok comedy. The yuks don't really come until they all convene for the dinner, over halfway through the film.

No one else finds the stereotypes and clownifying of homosexuality (Hank Azaria in particular) frustrating and offensive? Paying lip service every 45 minutes or so to these being good, tender people (the bench scene, for example) doesn't wash the bad taste out of my mouth.

People have to learn to laugh at themselfs.

If i took that attitude I'd say Father Ted is offensive to Irish people, or Fawlty Tower's is offensive to German's and Spaniards.

If the stereotypes were satiric or served any other thematic point, that would be one thing. But the movie wallows in them because the filmmakers think the only way to make homosexuality palatable for the mainstream audience is to turn them into comfortable, familiar clowns. And they're right. But that doesn't make it cool.

Sounds like Father Ted and Fawlty Towers, recently voted the 11st and 5th best comedies in British TV history. :good:

Give the general Joe on the street more Credit Yos.

But homosexuals and, say, the Irish aren't exactly comparable groups. Still second-class citizens, most of the time! Fawlty Towers' approach to stereotyping is not insidious like this is. And as perhaps the first (and certainly biggest) mainstream American comedy to be primarily about this issue, I feel like it had a responsiblity to not fall into the familiar traps.

Everyone talked about the box office success of Brokeback Mountain signaling a new acceptance of homosexuals as normal. But, no. The Birdcage made a hell of a lot more money, because everyone much prefers their homosexuals unthreatening, neutered and campy. Like on Will & Grace.

As the world's loudest homosexual ( :shout: ), I've got to disagree. This movie is just as hard on the opposite spectrum (thought it IS easy to pick on Republicans)... I think that's the point - it goes after everyone. The film is as intelligent as its audience. If you're smart enough to know that homosexuals (and Republicans?) aren't second class citizens, then the film is intelligent and fun. If you aren't, well, this movie isn't going to reinforce your hate; you're already an idiot. I have quite a bit of respect for this cast, too. With most of them being outspoken liberals, I'm sure they'd agree that this movie really takes shots at both sides and isn't meant to be a cruel mockery of homosexuality.

Comparing this comedy - something very funny and very accessible - with an "Oscar movie" isn't really fair. To be honest, Brokeback's performance is just as stellar, if not more so because of the type of movie it is - a serious, contemplative film based on issues. I don't buy the comparison at all. Hell, Brokeback made more than Crash, than GN&GL, Munich, and Capote... you don't give people enough credit. There are always going to be hateful, ignorant people. Just because there is a comedy (that's genuinely good) that features homosexuals does not mean Hollywood is pandering to hate mongers. It's like saying that every comedy about idiot heterosexuals (God knows there is one released every other week) is designed to appeal to those hateful gays. It's flawed logic.

The Birdcage wasn't a hit because it mocks gays, it was a hit because it's occasionally honest and funny as hell.
