The Nightmare Before Christmas

Quote:
The Nightmare Before Christmas, often promoted as Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, is a 1993 American stop motion musical fantasy film directed by Henry Selick and produced/co-written by Tim Burton. It tells the story of Jack Skellington, a being from "Halloween Town" who opens a portal to "Christmas Town". Danny Elfman wrote the film score and provided the singing voice of Jack, as well as other minor characters. The remaining principal voice cast includes Chris Sarandon, Catherine O'Hara, William Hickey, Ken Page and Glenn Shadix.

The genesis of The Nightmare Before Christmas started with a poem written by Tim Burton when he was a Disney animator in the early 1980s. With the success of Vincent in 1982, Disney started to consider The Nightmare Before Christmas as either a short subject or 30-minute television special. Over the years, Burton's thoughts regularly returned to the project, and in 1990, Burton and Disney made a development deal. Production started in July 1991 in San Francisco. Walt Disney Pictures decided to release the film under their Touchstone Pictures banner because the tone was rather dark for children. The Nightmare Before Christmas was met with with critical and financial success. Disney has reissued the film annually under their Disney Digital 3-D format since 2006.

My 3rd favorite musical behind South Park and Moulin Rouge, in my top 3 animations as well, I just love it. Wonderful concept, amazingly original execution, Burton flys on all cylinders. In my top 30.

This is a Halloween tradition for my family. Great concept, great music, and great animation. Really gets you into the spirit of both Holidays. I am looking forward to seeing this in I-max.

Grade: A.

 Someone's in the wrong thread....

A masterpiece. Burton's and Elfman's best. Technically and artistically a breakthrough.

By far Burton's best movie. Way way far, as he only has two good ones.

Also in my top 13 all time.

I have been a Danny Elfman fan from the early days of Oingo Boingo, so this is a treat musically. Also artistically.

Where it fails is in the story which is really kind of simple, with no surprises or twists, or even a lot of character development. There's no Grinch moment where a heart grows three sizes or anything. Jack just sort of says "Gosh, I'd better stay with what I know" and then everyone is back as they once were without much change. It is assumed Jack will once again get tired of being Pumpkin King in the future, since he really didn't find fulfillment, only unhappiness in his choice for a change.

Still, that minor failure only moves it from an A to a B for me.

Frabjous day! Caloo calay! I finally remembered my password!!

Snrub and I caught this in 3D last Christmas. We both agreed that the 3D wasn't very good.

Personally, I quite like the film. I like the holiday vibe. But it's the atmosphere I like and not the stories or characters.

And I'm not being funny, but Sally was nowhere near as sexy as she could have been.

Probably my favourite animated film, and definitely my favourite musical. All of the songs are instantly catchy and suit the film perfectly. The amount of pure creativity and imagination on display here is staggering. I love the animation style, and it never becomes hopelessly sappy like so many others in the genre. The Oogie Boogie bits are my favourite, and "Kidnap the Sandy Claws" is probably my favourite song, but there are really no weak spots in this film. As much as Burton had to do with this film, this is really Elfman's masterpiece.
