Home Alone 2: Lost in New York
Home Alone 2: Lost in New YorkQuote: Home Alone 2: Lost in New York is a 1992 American Christmas comedy film written and produced by John Hughes and directed by Chris Columbus. It is the second film in the Home Alone series and the direct sequel to Home Alone. The film stars Macaulay Culkin in the lead role as Kevin McCallister, while Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern reprise their roles as the Wet Bandits. Catherine O'Hara, John Heard, Devin Ratray, Kieran Culkin, Gerry Bamman, Tim Curry, Rob Schneider, Dana Ivey, and Brenda Fricker are also featured.
Eddie Bracken plays a minor role, while Ally Sheedy (who previously worked with Hughes in The Breakfast Club), Bob Eubanks, and Donald Trump make cameo appearances. The movie was filmed in Winnetka, Illinois, O'Hare International Airport in Chicago, Miami and New York City (which was star Culkin's hometown at the time). Despite receiving mostly negative reviews from critics, the film became the second most successful film of 1992, earning over $173 million in revenue in the United States and over $358 million worldwide.
Home Alone 3 followed in 1997, and Home Alone 4: Taking Back the House followed in 2002. Culkin did not appear in either film nor did the rest of the cast. Childhood favorite. A-

Yeah, the last time I saw this I was probably 11 or 12 years old, so my perspective is a little biased to say the least. hehe.
All that I remember is I felt like MaCauly Culkin did when he walked into that giant toy store: nothing but fun fun FUN for 90 minutes!

yes, it's a blatant cash-in on the first movie's phenomenal success and it rehashes a few of the first movie's jokes, but it's still a fun and somewhat heartwarming movie.

It stuck to the formula that made it good. Pesci and Stern were just as funny as ever, and McCauly was a better actor this time around.
Tim Curry and Rob Schneider had hysterical cameos though.
I think this is my favorite of the series because its a more polished film than the first. B+
The first two are Casablanca compared to the third though.

Re: Home Alone 2: Lost in New York
It’s distractingly like the first film. But the first was so good, you almost don’t care. You do a little bit though, and that’s what sort of disappoints about this one. It’s almost like a Mad libs script. But it still amazingly sort of works.

Funnier than the first, but less memorable. Still an A. Too many fond memories of enjoyment.

Donald Trump gives him directions in this one.
Dam I remember having the Talkboy after this movie. You couldn't do anything like the way he used it.
I actually prefer this one because of the supporting cast.

Re: Home Alone 2: Lost in New York
Home Alone is obviously a Christmas classic, but Home Alone 2 is a bit peculiar. The sentiment of the first film is so much stronger and it holds up incredibly well. The second film copies so much from the first film and is beyond ridiculous, even by the first film's standards, but it's actually funnier than the first.
It's obvious an unplanned sequel would be required to feature so many callbacks to the first (Kevin gets separated from family; Harry and Marv are the villains; Kevin befriends a misunderstood older person who ends up saving him in the end; etc etc), but it works best when it diverts completely. Perhaps the most welcome addition are the hotel staff played by Tim Curry, Rob Schneider and Dana Ivey. They make for excellent potential foils to Kevin.
I also didn't appreciate it as much as a kid, but I love how they expand upon Uncle Frank being such a cheap leech.
Unfortunately, if one looks at it from a critical point of view, every single event set-up is completely ridiculous, starting with an auditorium of parents laughing away as an adolescent (why is a kid Buzz's age singing with a kid Kevin's age?) making a mockery of his brother as if it's the greatest comedic gift they've ever been given. Kevin just happens to lose track of his dad and follows John Heard's stunt double. Kevin gets to New York, and of course Harry and Marv are there too.
But if you can turn off your brain, Home Alone 2 is a bit of an underrated sequel. Much of it is derivative, likely from the studio, but if you dig a little deeper, there's enough fresh material to make up for a solid and, at-times, funnier follow-up to the original.

Re: Home Alone 2: Lost in New York
I actually watched it today. Still holds up, certainly as an adult. Our Christmas Card had me and my bro as the bandits. Mom as the pigeon lady, Dad as the shovel guy from the first, and sis as the Kevin.

Re: Home Alone 2: Lost in New York
Watched this again over Christmas and it's just a great sequel. It may follow the same beats as the first film, but it's set in New York and Culkin is still a star as Kevin and I find it impossible not to love this too. It works on every level, from the comedy to the whole cast and the setting, it's really an excellent family film.

This movie works 110% better because of Tim Curry.

Re: Home Alone 2: Lost in New York
Tim Curry really is awesome here but his incompetent staff really are impressive too.
I've always enjoyed pigeon lady. So unintentially funny but also heartfelt. It was one thing for Kevin to make friends with a scary neighbor in Home Alone 1, at least they'd seen each other before. But a lady he finds in Central Park surrounded by pigeons all day, has a hideaway above the music hall, and ends up saving the day, it's so random it completely works!
Also the pigeon lady hug at the end with Kevin and turtle doves exchange, followed by the yell from Kevin's dad over the hotel bill to end the movie, it's even better than Buzz finding out Kevin trashed his room in #1.
The box office of this franchise still is insane. $732M for the original and $452,394,176 for the sequel adjusted. $18M unadjusted budget and $477M unadjusted global gross. To put things into perspective, Home Alone #1 reached #3 on the all time domestic list at the time of its release (equivalent to No Way Home today with $814M in that rank). Such a simple concept but 99% of this franchise's success is the charisma of Culkin. I don't think we've seen any youth actor come close to being able to fully anchor a movie blockbuster like he had.

Re: Home Alone 2: Lost in New York
Comparing this with Elf, Columbus really captures the magic of New York during the holidays where as Favreau’s New York feels so generic.
