Woody's written Scarlett a good, funny part, and she runs with it (and she's so friggen desirable in this movie, reminding me of Carole Lombard on more than one occasion. I hope Woody writes another comedy for her down the road). The film is filled with typically Allen-esque, funny one-liners, and Woody and Scarlett turn out to have great chemistry (giving off a fun Thin Man vibe, if Nick and Nora had been father and daughter rather than married). The ending is a riot, too, with a perfectly used "goddamn" coming from one of the main characters.

The problems are twofold: One, Hugh Jackman is wasted in a nothing part. Second, Woody doesn't build any suspense in the picture. Ever. He doesn't even try. Kinda lazy.

It's not as good as its brother, Manhattan Murder Mystery, which had more suspense and depth, but it's still a fun throwback to a 30s/40s style comedy/mystery.

It should be noted that this is very much in the Jade Scorpion/Hollywood Ending mold. No Match Point here.

Um... WTF was that?!?!

Painfully and embarrassingly unfunny. I'm fairly certain the majority of the people in the audience were laughing because they felt like they were supposed to be laughing because, ya know... it's Woody Allen. But there is seriously nothing funny here. There are almost non-stop attempts at humor, sure. None of it hits, though. This is seriously the weakest Allen screenplay I think I've ever seen put to film.

On top of that, Johansson proves once again that she is without a doubt one of the very worst actress' working today. Her attempt at aping Allen is almost painful to watch. It's like a train wreck of epic proportions. Hugh Jackman and Ian McShane are wasted, too.

Also, I think the film convinced itself it was actually a genuine mystery/thriller at some point, which it's not.

It's just a big rehash of everything Allen has done in the past, just not funny and with no spark. Fuck this noise.

Great movie! The entire audience was laughing out loud quite a bit! Two great ones in a row from Allen.

Scarlett Johansson missfires in my opinion. Her performance was very one-note and flat (she spoke in the same tone for the entire movie). Despite that, I thought it was a decent, enjoyable comedy. The ending is a bit "meh", but there were some funny, memorable moments throughout.

I thought it was very very good

It was quite funny. And the story was really good :)

I'm pretty sure it was the first Allen movie I've ever seen... And it was great.

And the death sequences fit well, heh.

9.4/10 A

This is an old school movie done right!

Classic comic-mystery plot, played out just right. I'm pretty sure, Woody promised Scarlett this role as part of his original contract negotiations for Match Point, in exchange for making her look so dumb in that one. The crowd I saw it with (albeit average age 73) ate it up - there was almost continuous laughter throughout the movie!

Yup -- this is the real deal, but only if you can appreciate the classic stylings of both the comedy and mystery tropes from back in the day...

6 out of 5.

I'm really glad that a lot of you are digging the movie! After makeshift's review, I thought the tide had turned and I was really gonna look like a nutbar for enjoying this.

I guess I was one of the few people who loathed Match Point. As such I was expecting this film to be less then stellar, especially after the abysmal trailer.

But I was very surprised. Clever, fun, and dare I say very funny as well. The acting was a bit flat but still very enjoyable. B+

It's the worst Woody Allen I have seen so far (I've seen only six, though) and quite a bit worse than Match Point (which grew on me even more after the initial viewing). The screenplay is just so...flat. Like makeshift said, it is a rehash of a lot of Allen's older (and better) stuff. Johansson delivers a pretty bad performance, again after Match Point. Really surprising... Some jokes were great and had me laughing out loud. Woody Allen basically played himself all over again, but hey, he's good at that and got more laughs from me than anyone else. Hugh Jackman and Scarlett Johansson have zero chemistry. The story with a nice twist is okay, but as I said, the screenplay is very flat. It is not a bad film, but a very mediocre one for someone like Allen.

It's very slight, but it's brisk and enjoyable (I chuckled here and there).

Johansson, though, is just plain miscast here. You can see what Allen was going for with her character -- a sweet, charming ditz, of sorts -- but she really just doesn't pull it off, at all. Her line readings are incredibly flat.

I know it's Woody Allen lite (very lite, probably), but other than that, I enjoyed myself for the most part.

The movie confiorms once more that Johansson is one of the most overrated actresses working today. She's totally unconvincing in this one. The bits with Ian McShane were funny, but the rest of the film was forgettable. Woody should lay off his schtick once and for all and better make another Match Point

I enjoyed it a lot, I thought Johansson was great in this.

An extremely low B+.

I think it was pretty amusing. I liked Johansson here, she was what she is supposed to be. Her character and everything else were bland-written. But then again, the script itself noticeably doesn't try to be depth or something. It was (pardon me, Bradley) 'classic comic on mystery/thriller genre'.

My problem with this movie is that sometimes Allen was just so annoying. Jackman is completely wasted (except for the pool scene, what a body!). And I wish, beside the dialogue, it could be more witty.

Is this classic Woody Allen? No, and it doesn't try to be. It's just a nice piece of fluff that does what it sets out to do, and that is to be an enjoyabe comedy.

One might argue that this is indeed classic Woody Allen -- from his late 60's/early 70's era film-making style (eg: [i]Sleeper, Everything You Wanted To Know About Sex...) -- ie: nice pieces of fluff. It wasn't until later that he got all serious...

Incredibly entertaining and enjoyable. It was a blast to watch and Scarlett Johansson and Hugh Jackman were both excellent. One of Woody Allen's better efforts.

Scoop

This is Allen at and back to his best. Not only his performance but the film is a gem. It ends a tad abruptly, but apart from that it is a refreshing and hilarious whodunnit. This is right up there with Allen greats like Annie Hall and Bananas, and just proves that Allen had not lost it by 2006. It is so quintessentially Allen, and I wish he would make more like this (though I imagine it takes years to collect material for classics like this). Set in London but it has such an American veil covering it, from the paying of a bill to going to the launderette to yellow crime scene tape across the door, it's great. And the British supporting performers that prop up the film, such as Alexander Armstrong, Anthony Head, Charles Dance, Phil Cornwell, and Sanjeev Bhaskar, plus a load of other faces, add another type of pleasure.
