Cruising
CruisingQuote: Cruising is a 1980 film directed by William Friedkin and starring Al Pacino. The film is loosely based on the novel, by New York Times reporter Gerald Walker, about a 1970s New York City serial killer targeting gay men, in particular those associated with the S&M scene.
Poorly reviewed by critics, Cruising was a modest financial success, though the filming and promotion were dogged by gay rights protesters. The title is a play on words between 'cruising' in the sense of patrolling and 'cruising' in the sexual sense, used particularly by homosexuals.

An interesting, albeit somewhat ridiculous, horror/thriller which involves a detective (Al Pacino) going undercover in the urban world of gay leather bars to track down a serial killer who is disposing of gay men. The film flounders a bit with character development (especially Pacino's detective, whom we are supposed to believe is deeply affected by the case) and is politically problematic in the way it depicts the gay community. Nevertheless, given the film is rather dated (1980), it almost acts as an interesting foray into how Hollywood once viewed and treated a disenfranchised minority. Although that clearly isn't what the movie set out to do, I couldn't help but be fascinated by that.
I would grade this, but I'm too conflicted.

This movie was just... not good at all. Dated, hokey, plays on stereotypes unsuccessfully.

Not to mention one of Pacino's worst performances.
I dunno, the quality wasn't that great, but there was something on a more outward/social level that interested me.
