The Fast and the Furious

Quote:
The Fast and the Furious is a 2001 street racing action film starring Paul Walker, Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster. Directed by Rob Cohen, The Fast and the Furious was the first mainstream film to feature the Asian automotive import scene in North America. It is the first film in The Fast and the Furious film series. The concept was loosely inspired by a Vibe magazine article about street racing in New York City. It bears no relation to the earlier racing film of the same name. The plotline is also loosely similar to Point Break.

The Fast and the Furious makes Citizen Kane look like Pootie Tang.

Well, no, but it's freakin' awesome.

I am an action fan and I think that Vin Diesel, while not exactly Oscar-worthy, is a good action star with some charisma that mostr actors bin the genre are lacking. That said, I found the film pretty average. It just did not deliver as much on the premise as I would have hoped and it pretty much stole everything from Point Break. Nice car chases, but little tension and no outstanding action scenes.

Bad, but fun. This one is at least a guilty pleasure, compared to the torturous sequel. C+

A big surprise for me. It's adrenaline-pumping fun that serves as a good time killer. The second one was terrible, though, so I guess Vin Diesel is indeed very smart for skipping out on second-rate sequels to this and XXX.

Wow. I couldn't stand this. I saw it only last summer and I've already almost completely forgotten about it (I usually have a very good memory. Long-term, anyway. Especially with movies). I wasn't entertained at all and thought the ending was really anti climactic. I gotta give it to Vin Diesel though. He does have a solid presence on screen.

Does Saving Private Ryan count?

Anyway, yeah, the original is the best. Just got back from the third and I can't get over how bad the series is getting. The action was decent but the acting was almost too bad to comprehend. There was actually some badass-ness in the first, a lot less in the second, and none to be found in the 3rd.

Looks like this movie is skewered right down the middle when it comes to grades for this.. "A+" from Zing and damn near as low as an "F" from others saying how bad it is................but FUN :funny:

I liked it the first time, when it was Point Break.

But on a side note, it was a nice little action film that features real people and has a quasi realistic feel, which hasn't happened in a summer blockbuster in a long time,.

LOL @ 2006. However, with how much better the franchise has gotten since then ("better" here meaning embracing how dumb and disconnected from reality it is, and having fun with it), the "second-rate" part doesn't apply.

It's weird watching this one now, though. It's still a fun movie despite the remarkably amateurish acting, but it's so small and relatively intimate compared to what the series has become.

Somewhat overrated IMO, but I still enjoy this movie. I remember just how insanely popular it was back in the day and then when I actually saw it I wasn't that impressed.

Made me an even bigger fan of Diesel though.

Diesel was tolerable in xXx, and I actually like[d] that movie. But everything he's been in since (besides The Chronicles of Riddick), he's been a twat with an ego that you can tell reads the headlines and really thinks he's the biggest star ever (hence his unwillingness to act anymore). He just plays Vin Diesel in every movie, and sometimes he doesn't even do that well.

The movie is cool and the stunt of the car going under the car was copied and a few people died trying it.

Anyways fun movie and the ending is nice especially with Vin and the Muscle car at the end and it goes on two wheels...
That was an epic scene.

Post Re: The Fast and the Furious
I haven't seen this for so long that I forgot that these initial movies were so frustrating. The cool cars, ladies at display are all good, the races are done with finesse that we haven't seen in the movies before it (though I feel Mad Max 2 has better chases still) and the two leads both complement each other well. And yet it goes on and on focusing on a plot that's well beyond its reach and its actors were not yet mature to handle. Instead it goes through predictable motions of movie making and family ties which resolves to literal nothing, all the while taking itself too seriously. This is a lucky franchise that it got sequels that helped the series to mature.
