Quote:
Dave Chappelle's Block Party, also known as Block Party, is a 2006 documentary film hosted and written by comedian Dave Chappelle, and directed by Michel Gondry. Its format is inspired by the documentary Wattstax.

The film and its soundtrack are dedicated to the memory of music producer J Dilla (James Dewitt Yancey), who died from lupus one month before the film's release. An incomplete version of Block Party was shown prior to its official release at the 2005 Toronto International Film Festival. The film grossed over $12 million in the box office and debuted at #6 in its opening weekend, grossing $6 million in 1,200 theaters.

makeshift, I sure hope you weren't one of those who criticized people for giving a movie an F without first seeing it.

Supremely entertaining and uplifting movie. Probably helped by the fact that I love Dave Chappelle, The Roots, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Common, The Fugees, etc... One of the performances featured an amazing duet with Erykah Badu and Jill Scott, almost worth seeing the movie just for that.

Great stuff, it's a shame the audience never picked it up. While Chappelle does a swell job hosting with a few comedic remarks but nothing over the top, it's the music and overall joyfullness and spirit of the block party that really makes the film shine. The performances are absolutely wonderful, with Kanye West, Talib Kweli, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Mos Def, The Fugees, among others. You want to show one of those people who thinks that all rap and urban music is crap, you want to make them appreciate it, show them this.

Movie itself is great, the performances are brilliant.

I enjoyed it, liked the music, but didn't really feel any of the energy or spirit that a lot of people say drove Chappelle to make this as a sort of explanation as to why he did with Comedy Central what he did.

The only reason why I liked the film was because Dave Chappelle himself is likeable. Other than that, the behind the scenes stuff wasn't very interesting and the musical acts were kind of boring and tedious.
