In Cold Blood is a 1967 film based on Truman Capote's book of the same name. Richard Brooks prepared the adaptation and directed the film. Some scenes were filmed on the locations of the original events, in Garden City and Holcomb, Kansas including the Clutter residence. The film stars Robert Blake as Perry Smith, Scott Wilson as Richard "Dick" Hickock, and John Forsythe as Alvin Dewey. The film follows the trail of Smith and Hickock: they kill the Clutter family in Kansas, go on the run, and get found and caught by the police, followed by their trial and execution. Although the film is in parts faithful to the book, Brooks created a fictional character, "The Reporter" (played by Paul Stewart). This was also the first commercially released film in the US to use the word 'shit'. The film was nominated for four Academy Awards: Director, Original Score, Cinematography and Adapted Screenplay.

In 2008, In Cold Blood was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

One of my favorite movies I watched in film study this year. It's sadistic but has some great performances. One of the movies that doesn't have to show everything to get it's point across. Less is more is true to this movie. Plus the score is FANTASTIC!

In Cold Blood, the adaptation of Truman Capote's famous book is an interesting, if a bit dry character study. It mostly tells us the story of Perry Smith and Dick Hickock before and in particular after their crime, saving up the scene of the actual crime until close to the end of the movie. While some of the things told here were fascinating, I still thought that others, like the scenes of the police investigations proved to be rather distracting. I'd have prefered if the entire film had focused on Perry and Dick and their motives (or the lack thereof). Thus, I found it a bit disappointing that this aspect wasn't delved enough into, one or two main scenes aside.

Acting-wise, the film is fine, but no one really stand out, maybe except for Robert Blake (Perry). Overall, none was Osar-worthy, though. I did appreciate the movie's technical aspects as the music and especially the cinematography was aces. I also must commend the fact that they didn't really try hard to hide Perry Smith's apparent homosexuality in this. Of course, there are no explicit scenes, but the implicatons are very obvious.

On the whole, it's an interesting movie, but never went beyond that to me, as it failed to get me really involved into the proceedings or the characters. For a really fascinating trip into a killer's mind, there was too little depth overall.
