Quote:
GoldenEye (1995) is the seventeenth spy film in the James Bond series, and the first to star Pierce Brosnan as the fictional MI6 agent James Bond. The film was directed by Martin Campbell and is the first film in the series not to take story elements from the works of novelist Ian Fleming. The story was conceived and written by Michael France, with later collaboration by other writers. In the film, Bond fights to prevent an arms syndicate from using the GoldenEye satellite weapon against London in order to cause a global financial meltdown.

GoldenEye was released in 1995 after legal disputes forced a six-year hiatus in the series, during which Timothy Dalton resigned from the role of James Bond and was replaced by Pierce Brosnan. M was also recast, with actress Judi Dench becoming the first woman to portray the character, replacing Robert Brown. GoldenEye was the first Bond film made after the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War, which provided a background for the plot.

The film accumulated a worldwide gross of US$350.7 million, considerably better than Dalton's films, without taking inflation into account. Some critics viewed the film as a modernisation of the series, and felt Brosnan was a definite improvement over his predecessor. The film also received award nominations for "Best Achievement in Special Effects" and "Best Sound" from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

The name "Goldeneye" pays homage to James Bond's creator, Ian Fleming. While working for British Naval Intelligence as a Lieutenant Commander, Ian Fleming liased with the American OSS to monitor developments in Spain after the Spanish Civil War. The operation was codenamed Operation Goldeneye. Fleming's estate in Oracabessa, Jamaica is also known as Goldeneye.

Love this movie. It's what really got me interested in the Bond series. A

It would've been probably one of the best Bond movies if it weren't for one person. Eric Serra. It's just not a James Bond movie without the famous James Bond theme written by Monty Norman. It's there, but Serra (Probably at the producers request to change things up after the six year hiatus) disguised it and made it sound really awful. Other than that, it's a great Bond movie.

Talk about your great brithday presents! Not only did the producers of one of my favorite movie series pick the guys that I had wanted since 1986 to play James Bond, but they even released it on my birthday. It couldn't have been a better Bond film for a new and exciting era, as Pirece Brosnan instantly was a hit, and made people quickly forget about the Timothy Dalton misstep. (and I'm one of the few who liked Dalton, but Brosnan buried him in the role.)

It had great villians, with Sean Bean as a former friend and MI6 agent gone bad and Famke Janssen as his amazon hench woman with killer legs. From this point on, the Bond films have served as a springboard for actors who have moved into other big franchises.

Sean Bean - Lord of the Rings
Robbie Coltrane - Harry Potter
Famke Janssen - X-Men
Alan Cumming - X-men
Judi Dench - International sexpot!

Hopefully, director Martin Campbell can strike his brand of lightning twice, as Casino Royale opens on my birthday in 2006, but I'm very unsure about that. On the surface, Daniel Craig is no Pierce Brosnan.

Solid Bond film, and nice start for Brosnan, but it takes itself a little too seriously, and the music is just terrible. Brosnan slips into the role nicely, and Sean Bean is a great villain, but the whole film is too grim and dark, without a lot of humour. Not to mention the butchering of the classic theme. Some great action set pieces (the tank chase in particular) and Famke Janssen as the crazed Bond girl (the other one was so bland) make up for it. Above average Bond.

It's the best Brosnan Bond film. My sixth favorite Bond overall, behind From Russia with Love, Goldfinger, The Living Daylights, Licence to Kill, and Casino Royale.

With Pierce Brosnan's first outing as 007 in Goldeneye, you get a mix of Roger Moore and Timothy Dalton. He's got the charm and charisma of Moore had while also being able to deliver the standard one liners, except he doesn't make them sound horrifically cheesy. And he comes close to matching the serious side of Bond like Dalton could.

Like Licence to Kill, Goldeneye works so well because of the villain Alec "006" Trevelyan. He doesn't have the ruthlessness that Sanchez had (not all Bond villains need it, it just worked really well in LTK), but he's 007's perfect match in intelligence and physicality. And the back and forth they have is quite good.

Also on the villain front we get Xenia Onatopp. And this is how you make a career. Famke Janssen as Onatopp is one of the best henchman in the franchise. She's certainly the sexiest. And like any great Bond henchman she can certainly kick his ass around. It was also a nice touch that she cums whenever she does something even remotely violent. She just oozes with sexuality. There's a reason why so many guys my age began their love for Bond with this film.

As for the other Bond girl, Isabella Scorupco, she's sexy and she holds her own against Bond, but she's just about average as a Bond girl. I think she might also have the distinction of being the first Bond girl to actually lock tongues with 007 (these are the kind of things you notice when you watch these back to back ten times over).

But like I mentioned before, and most others seemed to as well, the score by Eric Serra is well, not great for a Bond film. It's different. That's the highest compliment I could give it. The added addition of the standard Bond theme, instead of the one Serra made that's actually still on the soundtrack, sounds good during the tank chase and makes up for the rest of the score. However, Serra's score at the very end of the film when Bond and 006 are chasing one another on the satellite is very damn good. That part of the score seems to go overlooked.

And speaking of that very tank chase, it's one of the highlights of the series. So is the fist fight between Bond and 006 just before they go up on the satellite. And the opener with the bungee jump off the dam is easily the most iconic shot from the Brosnan era.

It's clear that Goldeneye was written with Dalton in mind (which explains the serious tone), and as much as I would've liked to have seen him get a chance at making at least a couple more Bond films, Pierce Brosnan does more than nicely in taking over the tux.
