Quote:
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is a 2003 adventure fantasy film based on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disney theme parks. It was directed by Gore Verbinski and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. The story follows blacksmith Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and pirate Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) as they rescue the kidnapped Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) from the cursed crew of the Black Pearl, captained by Hector Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush).

Jay Wolpert developed a script based on the theme park ride in 2001, and Stuart Beattie rewrote it in early 2002. Around that time, producer Jerry Bruckheimer became involved in the project; he had Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio work on the script, adding the supernatural curse to the storyline. Filming took place from October 2002 to March 2003 in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and on sets constructed around Los Angeles, California.

The world premiere was held at Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, on June 28, 2003. The Curse of the Black Pearl was an unexpected success, with positive reviews and grossing over $653 million worldwide. The film became the first in a series, with two back-to-back sequels, Dead Man's Chest and At World's End, released in 2006 and 2007. A third sequel, On Stranger Tides, was released in 2011. The original film was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Actor for Depp.

Like, the biggest surprise of 2003. It's just so awesome. A

Mighta been a really good movie if it was an hour shorter, but yeah, I enjoyed Depp's Keith Richard impersonation, too bad it had to have two leading ladies - Keira Knightely would have been plenty without Orlando Bloom too...

2 out of 5.

7/10. It's entertaining (well, take out Depp and the movie is boring as hell), but I cannot see why so many people hold it in high regard.

I think the point was to take out most everything except Johnny Depp - eg: the endless skeleton battles...

Just awesome. And I've never really been into pirates that much.

#1 movie of 2003!

OK but for me, I was thinking that the scenes with Depp and others worked.

I enjoyed it throughout.

What an A. One of the smartest dialogues in a "summer blockbuster" I've seen in ages, and a moment of true creation of a new character in hero-type film. Memorable performances, and while Capt. Jack Sparrow may be the worst pirate you've ever heard of...at least you have heard of him.

Aaaaaamen. I made the mistake of seeing it twice in three days, and the second time time just seemed to slow down by the second half. Johnny Depp definitely stole the show though, I knew being a pirate could be fun but hot damn if he doesn't seem to be enjoying himself.

Very good movie, my problem was that they didnt seem to know how to end it. The scene where Jack kills Barbosa is excellent, but I wish they ended it around there instead of giving us another 20 minutes and yet another escape from the military.

One of the best pure fun and adventure films of all-time. I never grow tired of watching it. I never feel the length while watching it, either. One of the biggest surprises of the past five years.

I agree!

Waaaaaaay over-rated and too long! That entire part where Jack Sparrow's stranded on the island could have been cut. The special effects weren't memorable at all, and parts of the story were just plain weird.

Hehehe.

I pretty much agree with this, though I'm more inclined to give it an A-. Doesn't repeat as well as it should, probably because of the length.

Agreed...This may sound crazy, i watched it 9 times in theater. I remeber going with my sister and mom on Sunday for like a family night thing, and then I knew it was amazing! I was so happy and I went with every single one of my friends that went, then I bought DVD, and watched it twice in one day...I might be obsessed...But its ok

Overlong and a bit boring at times, but Johnny Depp is phenomenal, and Rush is a good villain.
