B+
To be honest, I never read the literary source to this one, so I'll judge the movie by its own merits only which is probably a good thing because I liked the movie a whole lot. Liam Neeson is great in the main role as Jean Valjean, but the true highlight is Geoffrey Rush's impressive performance as Inspector Javert. Uma Thurman (who has way too little screentime) and Claire Danes round up the great cast. The acting is one of the movie's highlights, but not its only one. I don't know how to put it on words, but the storyline simply involved me and while it was not perfect, it was certainly a very interesting and engaging movie. I think more references to the time period it was taking place in wouldn't hurt as those are only shown in a very few scenes towards the end, but overall it was a very good film with a great ending.
