The 2007 Stanley Cup Playoffs Game (Congrats... me!)
Well, I couldn't find the logo for this year's playoffs, so I'm just reusing last year's. For all of you hockey fans, here's the second annual Stanley Cup Playoffs Game which was such a rip-roaring success last year. Since there aren't many NHL fans on this board, it makes sense to combine this with the discussion thread for the playoffs. So here goes...
The playoffs start on Wednesday night, so I figured I'd get a head start on this to try and get as many people as possible. I'm hoping for more than last year (where we had seven). So please join!
Each round, every participant picks the winner of each series and in how many games. In addition, there are a number of questions about each round that should be answered. Furthermore, I'm setting up a set of questions for the entire playoffs that should be answered before the first round begins. Anyone who wants to join can, just post your predictions here. Please don't PM anything to me, there should be no worries about cheating with this.
Rules:
1. Predictions for round one and the whole-playoff questions are due by 7:00 pm Eastern on Wednesday, April 11 - just before the games start.
2. For the series predictions, please choose both which team you think will win and in how many games (remember, it's best-of-seven, so the first team to win four wins the series).
3. For the questions, just choose one answer (it'll either be a player, a team, a series, or a number). There may be ties for some of the questions, but just choose one answer.
4. The scoring will be done as follows:
1 point for choosing the correct team
2 points for picking the right number of games (only if you also picked the right team)
3 points for each round question right
5 points for each full playoff question right
Any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to let me know. Without further adieu, here's round one:

Hey guys, along with trixster's awesome game, I created a little pool at http://www.hockeydraft.ca for WOKJ NHL fans.
In this pool, you simply rank the playoff teams from 1 to 16, with 1 being the worst and 16 being the best. That's it.
(No two teams can be assigned the same ranking.) For every win a team gets, you will get the number points you assign that team. For example, if you rank Ottawa 16, then that would mean you believe they will win the most number of games in the playoffs (ie. The Stanley Cup). So you would get 16 points multiplied by how many wins Ottawa ends up getting as the playoffs are going. If you rank Anaheim 1, then you would want Anaheim to get swept in the first round.
Since you ranked Ottawa at 16, you obviously hope they will win the most games (since you attributed the most points to them). You want to rank the rest of the teams in order, essentially, of how many wins you think they will get (in other words, how far they will make it in the playoffs and how many games they would win in their final series even if they lost that series).
Go to http://www.hockeydraft.ca
To enter into our pool:
Username: wokj
Password: wokjnhl
And you can submit an entry (as said, you will just rank the 16 teams in the playoffs from 1 to 16).
Throughout the playoffs we can see which teams are winning most and how many points we are getting in the pool. At the end of the playoffs, we will see who has the most points and thus best predicted which teams would make it far (and win the most games).
Sign up if you will! It's so simple - takes just a one time prediction, and then you are set. You can edit your submission up until the deadline (April 11 at 4pm PST / 7pm EST). Under standings you will be able to see who has predicted (my tentative initial predictions are up). The actual predictions are hidden until the deadline; I did those so people couldn't look at others predictions. But if you guys want the predictions people place to viewable immediately, I can change that so entries are not hidden.
Peace,
Mike.

Me too.
Also, Chip, can you make sure that you only have one answer per each question? I know that you have two series each going the longest and the shortest, but just pick one of them that you think is right, so you don't have an unfair advantage over the rest of us. Everyone else, please make sure that you pick only 1 answer per each question.

I'll join sometime later tonight.
Bit of playoff commentary now, I've been away for a couple days...
I think that now more than ever, the division winners being guaranteed the top 3 spots rule should be either eliminated or changed. I like the idea of divisions to be honest, but look at how much it screwed up the playoff picture this year, especially in the East. 4 Ottawa and 5 Pittsburgh are two of the EC's best, and now they're playing each other in the first round... Meanwhile, passable 3 Atlanta and 6 NY Rangers get each other... BLEH. One big time full cup contender will be out right away, and one mild team will get an undeserved pass to the second round. And even adding to that, the winner of the Penguins/Senators will end up playing likely Buffalo in the 2nd round... Arguably the 3 most dangerous teams in the conference are now because of that rule, in the same half-bracket. As a result the NJ Devils have a total cakewalk to the semis, they get to face Tampa, then Atlanta or NYR in the first 2 rounds. Sooo screwed up. Also, in the West it's not as bad, but Nashville despite having a great season, will be screwed off the bat just like last year, because San Jose is just too good and will likely kill them again.
In the NBA the division winners are guaranteed a top 4 spot, while the highest non division winner can rank as high as they want, and it seems to work. If they had that rule, it would be 3 Ottawa vs 6 NY Rangers, and 4 Pittsburgh vs 5 Atlanta, which makes much much much more sense. I think the NHL should adopt that right away.

Glad to see you back, Shack.
I agree with you about the division leaders thing, though if they did it like the NBA it'd be 1. Buffalo 2. New Jersey 3. Ottawa 4. Atlanta 5. Pittsburgh because the division leader is still guaranteed a top four spot. It'd still be Atlanta v. Pittsburgh, but the other way around.
And if New York upsets Atlanta, they'll play Buffalo in the next round, because the teams are re-seeded, it's not bracketed. Ottawa/Pittsburgh will play New Jersey.

My official playoffs analysis:
Eastern Conference
(1) Buffalo Sabres vs (8) New York Islanders
Buffalo already has the top record in the league, and now they're healthy again. NY did well to make it this far, but their road will end quickly. The Sabres have too much depth, and after last year they'll be experienced. Islanders Dubielweiscz as the replacement goalie has been playing well, but they still need DiPietro in net in future years if they want to build a contender. Buffalo should be hungry after last year's conference finals defeat. Get out the brooms.
Prediction: Buffalo in 4
(2) New Jersey Devils vs (7) Tampa Bay Lightning
Bit of an interesting pairing here. New Jersey is arguably the most purely defensive-minded team in the league, while Tampa may be the most purely offensive... The latter has not won a game this year without scoring more than 2 goals. Obviously one side will crack and the other will win, and while Vinnie and Marty are obvious threats, defense and goaltending tend to win out in these situations. If Tampa could get some defense and goalie strength like they had in 03-04, they could be a contender again. Until then though, nah.
Prediction: New Jersey in 5
(3) Atlanta vs (6) NY Rangers
Atlanta is like a european Tampa Bay. 3 major guns in Hossa, Kovalchuk, and Kozlov, not much anywhere else and no help whatsoever in the goaltending and defense area. They've been one of the most up and down teams this year, 4-5 game winning streaks followed by 4-5 game losing streaks were the norm. Getting Tkchuck and Zhitnik put them on a winning streak at the last moment that gave them their division, but their lack of d and general inexperience won't help. NY Rangers have played strong down the stretch, with Jagr and Lundquist starting to play well again, they are favoured to reverse the result from last year, though my personal gut says that Atlanta's big guns and home-ice advantage will steal this one.
Prediction: Atlanta in 6
(4) Ottawa vs (5) Pittsburgh
Definitley two teams who are far too good to be playing each other in the first round. I like Pittsburgh, but to be honest they're almost a lock to win cups in the future with the team they have. Ottawa is a team just waiting to break through with their continuingly stacked team, unfortunatley they have the same problem this year as they have in the past, their goaltending isn't quite up to snuff. But Pittsburgh's Fleury as a youngin isn't much better yet, and they're just a bit too inexperienced and young to make a big cup run just yet. I think if Ottawa had come into the playoffs against an easy 5th seed and went through as an under the radar choice, the lack of pressure could've benefitted them... But now that they're in the big match of the first round, I'm not so sure. I pick them here though.
Prediction: Ottawa in 7
Western Conference
(1) Detroit Red Wings vs (8) Calgary Flames
Another year, another top spot for the Red Wings... They can't miss in the regular season, even as they get old. The loss of Yzerman and another year onto those wrinkling eyebrows seemed this year to be balanced out by Hasek playing fantastic in yet another comeback year. The Flames were disappointing this year, even when they looked to pick things up in the last couple weeks of the year, they ended the season on a 4 game losing streak... Not quite the cup contenders they looked to be early on. Detroit has had a terrible time with the playoffs lately, but I can't see them being upset by an Albertan team for the 3rd straight time, everyone has to learn and Hasek is simply too good.
Prediction: Detroit in 6
(2) Anaheim Ducks vs (7) Minnesota Wild
Somehow, the same Ducks who started the year with one of the most impressive regular season opening 20 games ever, are kind of under the radar here. When Pronger went down, so did the winning and hype. Even after he came back, they haven't been quite as dominant, though that's not to say they can't be feared. Meanwhile Minnesota, despite still only getting a 7th seed, have been one of the bigger surprises of the year. Putting offense and excitement into a team that had none before, all of a sudden they've broken 100 points in the year, and with Gaborik back along with an upstart goalie in Backstrom, they were one of the hottest of the last half of the season. Should be an excellent series any way it's spun, I think I'll go with the upset here.
Prediction: Minnesota in 7
(3) Vancouver Canucks vs (6) Dallas Stars
This is likely the only easy match-up to predict in the Western Conference, despite both teams having very good records. Like last year, Dallas somehow took an old and seemingly middle ground team and gave them a great record, and like last year, they're the one team nobody is really caring about... they've flown under the under the radar expression, and then some. Vancouver has been one of the best of the second half of the season, and Luongo is too tough, while Turco in the playoffs has been a mess. Should be a quick exit quite like last year for the Stars.
Prediction: Vancouver in 5
(4) Nashville Predators vs (5) San Jose Sharks
Nashville is another team that will be screwed or nearly-screwed by the division winners system, despite having a bril year and the second best record in the Conference, they get to face the deathly San Jose Sharks in Round 1, just like last year when they were blown out. However this year the Preds are not only better overall, but have that playoff experience, and Forsberg is the type of guy that can turn series around. I'll pick the Sharks, though it'll be far from last year's easy series.
Prediction: San Jose in 6

Yay, another on the Vancouver vs Buffalo finale bandwagon. My heart says if it gets that far though, for the 3rd straight year a Canadian Northwest team will go to Game 7 and lose, painfully.
By the way, off topic NHL talk, but the lottery selections were chosen today. The draft order will be
1. Chicago
2. Philadelphia
3. Phoenix
4. Los Angeles
5. Washington
6. Edmonton
7. Columbus
8. Boston
9. St. Louis
10. Florida
11. Carolina
12. Montreal
13. Toronto
14. Colorado
With the rest being decided later. Edmonton got relatively where they deserved standings-wise... Nice to see Chicago with a #1 pick, it'd be nice to have that old franchise finally not sucking for once one of these years.

There really aren't many other known hockey fans here. I think it's time to contact all the Canadians on the board.
Peace, Mike.
Well, I got Squee to predict. But Cotton still hasn't. I'm gonna send out PMs.

Oh, and Detroit's going down hard in the first round. Again.

If only my team wasn't the worst in the NHL, maybe I would have followed the season more. As is, I am woefully unprepared and unknowledgeable with regards to hockey this year.
