What a race! And what an improvement the second half of the season has been.
I dont think the Ferrari was all that inferior GK. They were basically identical - but it came down to tyres and tyre choices. Alonso also made mistakes and also got screwed up in the pits. Good to see MS win. The battle over the next two races will be nail biting!!!
The last lap mayhem was funny. I friend said to me "watch Barrichello take everyone out" and a minute later it almost happened.
Great opening laps by Kimi in the wet. Visibility was minimal when he drove around the outside of the guys and when he overtook Button and later Fisi. Though he was lighter on fuel.
The chance of rain in the next two GP's is pretty good (though doubtful).

Massa beats Schumi to pole
http://www.planet-f1.com/News/Story_Pag ... 06,00.html
Quote: Felipe Massa beat Michael Schumacher to pole position in Saturday's qualifying for the Japanese GP.
Massa snatched pole position right at the end of a session dominated by the scarlet duo while Schumacher's World title rival Fernando Alonso will start back in fifth position alongside his Renault team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella.
The Toyota pairing of Ralf Schumacher and Jarno Trulli separated the Ferraris from the Renaults after an impressive display by the Japanese team while the Hondas of Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello filled row four, with the Briton in seventh.
The race will be the fifth time this season that Ferrari will cover both positions on the front row, making Alonso's hopes of retaining his world title increasingly difficult.
Full report to follow...
Times 01 F. Massa Ferrari 1:29.599 02 M. Schumacher Ferrari 1:29.711 03 R. Schumacher Toyota 1:29.989 04 J. Trulli Toyota 1:30.039 05 F. Alonso Renault 1:30.371 06 G. Fisichella Renault 1:30.599 07 J. Button Honda 1:30.992 08 R. Barrichello Honda 1:31.478 09 N. Heidfeld BMW 1:31.514 10 N. Rosberg Williams 1:31.856 11 K. Räikkönen McLaren 1:30.827 12 R. Massa again shows that on outright raw pace he's probably the fastest teammate Schumi has ever had. As for the Renaults well despite Alonso's less then stellar starting position I'll expect him to be right in the mix. The Toyota positions are no surprise they have always been strong around Suzuka.
On an unrelated noted On a potter around youtube I found one of the best season review films I've ever saw. Love the footage and the music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Jt59EMcp54 Indeed its very sad when measured besides Gilles death

Thanks for the link GK. Will check it out after the race. Just heading off to the CDT, a pub which is the only place in Australia we can watch the GP's live (this one is delayed by around 7 hours - ridiculous).
The Bridgestones are MEGA dominant!!

So looks like Alonso has his 2nd WDC. All he has to do is finish in the top 8 next race!

well ... finishing 8th or above isn't hard.
but heres the thing.
engine failure or DNF is not uncommon
Michael winning a race is not uncommon
I'm not completely convinced yet that alonso will win. only about 75% sure.

Thats the thing. A first lap crash or an engine failure and Alonso is out leaving MS to win (Fisi wont contain him and Massa will give him the win). And we all know (apart from last weekend) Michael is the luckiest bastard out there. He is playing it down - when deep down he will do anything for that win.
Should still be interesting.

I hope Massa sacrifices himself and becomes a present-day kamikaze by scratching Alonso from the finish line.

haha the yeah its possible MS will command the team to send out Massa on a kamakaze mission. Its Ferrari/Schumacher after all
The sad thing is - I want to be really excited about the last race - but I really dont want either driver to win the championship. But If i had to choose - i'd go for MS.

Ermm. Not a chance. I mean I'll fully admit to Schumi being the devious type but there is no way they could get away with that.
As for the upcoming Brazilian race I'm going to say Ferrari will be quicker then Renault but Raikkonen will be the man leading the pack judging on past Mclaren performance in Interlagos.....................................unless the team orders for Raikkonen kick in early

Perhaps
Though Im sure he would want to prevent Mclaren having their first winless season since 1996.
BTW - Hamilton wont race in Brazil which is good IMO. I want to see him debut in Melbourne

No surprise in a way. Dennis never risks unless he has to. I mean lets be honest unless De La Rosa blitzes the field at Interlagos and storms to a win Lewis is guaranteeed that 2nd McLaren seat and I say well done he deserves it.

Congratulations to Alonso for winning his 2nd WDC.
Congratulations to Massa for winning his home GP and being the first Brazillian since Senna to do so.
And farewell MS. It wasnt meant to be - but a storming drive to finish off his career.

Yes. Massa looked like he could take the win all weekend. Something that Rubens never looked like doing in Brazil when he was at Ferrari (though he did have some bad luck aswell).
Massa started the year as we expected - fast but ragged - but has really put it all together by seasons end.
Next year should be interesting with Kimi to Ferrari and Alonso to Mclaren. Renault will be praying that Heikki can hit the ground running from the first race as Fisi doesnt look like a driver who could carry the team to more championships.
This week Ferrari will announce its new staff structure and hopefully Mclaren will announce their 2nd driver soon too. Hopefully its Hamilton.
Of all those times ive been against Schumacher over the years - its sad to see him go. Would have to see more of his battles with Alonso, Kimi and the new guys.

LEWIS SECURES MCLAREN RACE SEAT.
http://www.planet-f1.com/News/Story_Pag ... 11,00.html
Quote: Lewis Hamilton's dream has been realised as McLaren have confirmed he will partner reigning World Champion Fernando Alonso for the 2007 Formula One season.
The 21-year-old Briton will become the first black driver to compete in the sport.
"It's a dream come true," said Lewis.
"To be racing in Formula One with McLaren has been the ultimate goal for me since I was very young and this opportunity is a fantastic way to end what has been the best year for me."
It was at the age of 10 Hamilton first approached team principal Ron Dennis at an awards dinner and informed him he wanted to race for McLaren in Formula One.
Taken by Hamilton's enthusiasm, the youngster was inducted into the McLaren and Mercedes-Benz Young Driver Support Programme from its inception in 1998.
Hamilton showed his promise by winning the McLaren Mercedes Champions of the Future karting series that year.
As he continued to develop, Hamilton went on to dominate the 2003 British Formula Renault Championship, winning 10 of 15 races.
After winning the Formula 3 Euro series in 2005, Hamilton followed up by becoming GP2 Series champion this year, leading to his first test for McLaren in September.
"I have grown up with McLaren and Mercedes and wouldn't be where I am today without their continued support and guidance," added Hamilton, whose parents emigrated from the Caribbean island of Grenada in the 1950s.
"However I'm aware that this will be a challenge and I know that there will be a lot of attention on me.
"But the team has told me just to relax, do the best I can and enjoy the opportunity. I will work hard to get good results."
Dennis, not normally renowned for taking such gambles with his driver line-up, is confident Hamilton will live up to his rich promise.
"Since 1998 Lewis has formed an important part of our long-term strategy, and we are pleased that we are able to help him take another step and achieve his dream of becoming a Formula 1 racing driver," said Dennis.
"Pedro (de la Rosa) has done an outstanding job for us this season but we felt it was the right time to provide Lewis with this opportunity.
"It's obviously going to be the biggest challenge of his career so far, but it's one we are sure he will be able to meet.
"He is coming into the paddock for the first time as a Formula 1 racing driver and will have to familiarise himself with the pressures of a grand prix weekend.
"However, the confidence we have in Lewis' abilities and talent is clear from our decision to give him the chance."
Norbert Haug, vice president of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport, insists Hamilton deserves his opportunity.
"Lewis is a gifted driver who has proved his talent with two consecutive title wins - 2005 in the Formula 3 Euro Series and this year in the GP2 Series," said Haug.
"McLaren and Mercedes-Benz have supported Lewis already for nine years. He was half as tall as he is today when he started in karting.
"It's clear Lewis has less experience in comparison to the other 21 Formula 1 drivers in grand prix cars.
"However, extensive tests during the coming months will prepare him for his first season.
"I am very glad that a guy like him gets his deserved chance."
Dennis has opted for Hamilton ahead of de la Rosa, who will revert to his role as test driver after racing for McLaren for the final eight races of the season following Juan Pablo Montoya's departure.
Gary Paffett will continue in his role with the team working on the test and engineering programme alongside Hamilton, Alonso and de la Rosa.
Great news i think. Lewis will really push Alonso hard in my view.

I came here specially after I heard the news GK. Great news!
I agree he will push Alonso and he wont have the pressure to have to beat him. Afterall - nothing wrong by being beaten by a double WDC. Offcourse I think he will be much closer to Alonso than people think! As long as Mclaren dont screw him by developing the car exclusively to Alonso's style.
Atleast I still will support one Mclaren next year.

Some additional news:
Schumacher never drove for Mercedes because of Ron Dennis. Im sure it is because MS wanted No.1 driver status.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/55775
and
Mika Hakkinen considering Mclaren team advisory role. Would have loved to see one of my favourite drivers race again but this is good too.

If Mclaren deliver a good car I'll say Lewis will be challenging for race wins by the middle of the season.
With Ferrari this looks like the strongest line-up for 2007. Fisi and Keikki in the Renaults look very lightweight by comparision.

I think the Mclaren will be strong. Since 2001 they have been delivering the goods every second year (the odd numbered years). So they will be strong. The only doubt would be the transition to BS tyres and alot of key personnel leaving. I think they can be the second or best car by mid season.
Renault will slip a little thanks to Fisi being lead driver. He just isnt good enough. Heikki is too new I guess.
The dark horses will be Honda, BMW and the Adrian Newey designed Red Bull.

Ya 2007 is already looking like a juicy type of year. Newey's Red Bull will be regular podium challengers, Honda will be up there again and BMW with Kubica (Hiedfeld is a dead driver walking in my opinion) will be another thorn in the big 3s side.
It'll be good to see Webber in a competitive car (fingers crossed).
I'm glad Midland is gone for next year. they were a joy-void and at least with Sato on the grid we'll be guaranteed some hairbrained passing manuvoures.
I hate these winter breaks thou, bring back the Tasman series I say.

hehe the Tasman series would be good I must say - even though im too young to remember any of the originals (apart from reading about it).
Mika Hakkinen has been testing for Mclaren. He was 2.3 seconds off Hamilton though what exactly he was testing I have no idea. Would love to see Hakkinen racing alongside Hamilton at Mclaren - offcourse that wont happen but he could be up for some sort of mentoring role.
