Yeah, but who's to say what case is the right case? You here say why the raised elbow...Thatcher is a bastard, that's all. But FA is to deal with him, not police.

Should've Rooney been greeted with police after stomping on Carvahlo's jewels? That seemed pretty malicious, and quite dangerous. Referee thought it was on purpose, no doubt Carvahlo the same, I'd say they would be quite the witnesses. Zidane headbutt? Why not that as well? As much as it may sound ridiculous, such a hit could could be quite dangerous. Roy Keane 'confessed' that he tried to hurt Man City (I think) player, Schumacher's famous tackle...plus, there were quite a few fouls that 'looked better' than Thatcher's one, but were worse for the injured player. Don't think anyone could be completly right in deciding the right case.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for big punishments for such fouls (not for Rooney's though, it was unintentional!! ;)), but only from FA, FIFA, UEFA,...side.

But anyway, was not my point in posting that. It was just troubling to me how FIFA can threat Greeks, Italians for out-of-football authorities being brought into football, yet, stood silent when happened in Austria.

To clear things up a little, the police were involved in this case only because a substantial amount of people (footy fans/spectators etc) contacted the police over this incident, not any footballing body/club/player. So the police have a certain obligation to act upon this enquiry. No one cared enough for Carvalho's bollocks.

Don't think it matters. That is, if you mean that as a explanation why FIFA didn't react. Non football authorities jumped into football field in any case. It's not like Greek FF asked government to meddle, and even if Juve is a club, Italian federation again didn't asked them to appeal to civil court. And just imagine if this practice is 'in practice' everyday, how many opposing fans would call the police after every foul. :D

Gullimont, just a brutal foul that Didulica made. Got a red, got 8 games punishment, but also got sued. :-)

Nobody would have guessed this 2 weeks ago. Keane and Quinn never got on, but I guess the grudge has ended. I really don't know how he'll rescue that club. Its a mess

Wow...

Can I call that a shocking move?

There were rumours about Man Utd and Arsenal (or were they just fan wishes?) but West Ham? They certainly got better.

Their contracts were owned by some sports agency. Smells very fishy to me.

Yep, something does seem slightly fishy with this, Chelsea/Arsenal/ManU all apparently said no. . .

They refused signing both players. As did Chelsea. As of know, it seems they made the right descision in NOT signing the two under the apparent circumstances - Alledgedly West Ham payed a small fee for Teves+Mascherano, thought to be £5million each, to the company which "own" them, MSI. The catch is, when it comes to the sale of the players from West Ham, the club get nothing. . . nothing, so really all they have is a loan deal. . .And the agents getting rich quick.

Middle East bid for Hammers
Duncan Castles and Alex Bellos
Sunday Times

A CONSORTIUM from the Middle East is backing the proposed takeover of West Ham United led by Kia Joorabchian, the Iranian-born businessman who last week brokered the club’s signing of the Argentina stars Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano.
It emerged last night that funding for the takeover was being sought from a variety of sources in the region, including Israel. This led to speculation that Russian oligarchs, many of whom are Jewish and have Israeli citizenship, were involved, but a source close to the deal suggested that those approached for funds there were “Israeli-Israelis”, and insisted that no Russian money was involved.

Joorabchian believes West Ham could one day eclipse the top teams in the Premiership, both on and off the field. “I believe in the very near future West Ham can become bigger than Chelsea, maybe within seven years challenge Manchester United,” he said last night. “And certainly Alan Pardew can take West Ham into new territory, to challenge for the Champions League (places) and even the title . . . As far as I’m concerned they have got a far bigger worldwide fan base than Chelsea.”

A clearer picture of the transfer deal that brought the Argentinians to Upton Park has also emerged this weekend, with disclosures that West Ham did not pay a penny for the players and will pay only half their wages, and that Portsmouth had previously turned down a deal for Tevez and Mascherano because of the stringent contractual demands associated with it.

Renato Duprat, a Brazilian businessman who is an adviser to Media Sports Investment (MSI), the investment company that owns the players, confirmed that West Ham’s role was to act as a “surrogate mother” for the players in their first year in Europe as bigger clubs are sought for them. Though the Premiership club holds the players’ registrations for regulatory reasons, no money changed hands in the deal and MSI retains the right to determine their future places of employment. Both contracts contain a clause that permits MSI to sell Tevez and Mascherano to another club next year with West Ham receiving no share of the transfer fees.

For as long as the pair remain at Upton Park, the Hammers will pick up half of their salaries, the relatively modest sums of £1.5m for Tevez and £1m for Mascherano. However, the club is also contractually obliged to start each in the first team whenever they are fit to play. A buyout clause does allow West Ham to assume “normal” control over the players, but for a prohibitively high payment of about £60m.

While West Ham officially trumpeted Thursday’s acquisitions as “a massive coup for the Hammers, who have beaten off some of Europe’s biggest clubs to secure the services of the duo”, the reality of the deal was rather different. MSI’s original intention had been to use the World Cup to maximise its profit on the striker and midfielder, bought for Corinthians from Argentine football for about $35m two years previously. Unfortunately, first Chelsea — after a whistlestop scouting trip by Jose Mourinho — and then Manchester United, Sevilla, AS Roma and Arsenal refused to meet the asking price. By the early hours of Thursday morning, MSI had been reduced to offering what amounted to glorified loan deals to Portsmouth and West Ham until Pompey balked at the stringent terms.

Though Corinthians received nothing from the deal, the club’s president, Alberto Dualib, travelled to London last week to sign over the players’ registrations. “Do you know why they are at West Ham? Because they were the only club that would take them,” he said.

Among other things, this pisses me off greatly. How can the FA even allow something like that?

Fuck the manager's right to pick team, fuck the team if those players actually suck. Prolly wont, but still...

Also, this isn't NBA for instance, where clubs can trade players wherever they want, even if players themselves don't want to go there. What if by some chance T&M want to stay in West Ham?

Totally agree Nebs. This is a very worrying development.

The, um, interesting start to the EPL continues:

Interesting part 1. Everton destroys Liverpool. At Liverpool.
http://soccernet.espn.go.com/report?id=199111&cc=5739

Interesting part 2. Arsenal draws at home again.
http://soccernet.espn.go.com/report?id=199114&cc=5739

Interesting part 3. Portsmouth still hasn't allowed a goal.
http://soccernet.espn.go.com/report?id=199112&cc=5739

Interesting to see Bodrul's reaction: ManU tops Tottenham 1-0 to remain on top of table.
http://soccernet.espn.go.com/report?id=199118&cc=5739

Interesting that Mourinho does something other than feud with other managers: Chelski wins, takes 4th back. For now.
http://soccernet.espn.go.com/report?id=199116&cc=5739

Not so interesting to me this week:
Bolton 1 Watford 0
Newcastle 1 Fulham 2
SheffieldU 0 Blackburn 0

Arsenal are not liking the new stadium. They should have won today but the Boro keeper was on top form. I'm annoyed to say the least

Chelsea looked poor today, only shoddy Charlton defending from corners gave them the win.

And Everton and Portsmouth are really looking like dark horses, both teams fully deserved there wins.

Manchester was actually poor as well. I mean, looked that way.

Good to see Arsenal and Liverpool woes though, too bad Chelsea wont join them. :-p

 Well it is a local derby! Everton had home advantage by the way.

We played good until the first goal, then we died a little  I suppose we're a little lucky getting away at 1-0, though we had 2 decent opportunities late on to get the equaliser. Terrible start to the season though. Hope we can get the points midweek in the uefa cup.

I honestly am surprised by arsenals lack of quality so far this season. The only thing to possibly answer it is probably the pitch size, much larger than old highbury. Whatever it is, they really need to rectify the problem soon . . . .
