With Klinsmann available, it's pretty much a no-brainer to let Arena go, even if it wasn't before. The US federation has to take a chance.

Although Klinnsman did great for Germany during the cup, I cant help but feel he was only riding on the waves of host nations support. What he should be looking to do is to join a league side as an assistant coach.

I'd disagree to a real extent regarding him simply riding the host nation wave. I'd guess we'd have to see him coach somewhere else to really know though.

I almost wonder if there has not already been some contact with Klinsmann even given his public statements. At this juncture there is almost no other good choice for the US if it hopes to move forward. Another MLS coach would be a bad joke. Arena came from the MLS, and I think he got as far as you can with that and/or US college as your background.

OTOH, I'm still not seeing how Klinsmann goes from coaching his home country to 3rd in the WC to coaching a program that may well be lucky to make it out of the group stages next time around regardless of who is coaching it.

I've also seen Sven floated. If they go that route I'll smack them silly. :nonono:

Yuck. Please God that man will never work in football again.

During that press conference on Wednesday, when Klinsmann announced his resignation as the German coach, he said that he'll take a break from football for several months and that he definitely won't take on any jobs (such as becoming coach of the US national team) during that time. So, either the US team will stay coachless for like half a year and then hire Klinsmann or he will have to break his "promise", which would take away a bit from the excellent reputation he has in Germany right now, since being "burnt out", and thus, not feeling able to continue with a job such as this both physically and mentally at the moment, was the main reason he stated. Therefore becoming the US national coach like 2 weeks from now would basically make him look like a liar.
Of course, the US team could as well go with an interim coach of sorts until Klinsmann will be available by, say, January 2007, but I doubt that's a route they'd want to take.

U.S team doesn't really need a coach until next year when Gold Cup is played, as a SI article suggested, so I don't think US is in a hurry to hire anybody yet.

Ok, I guess they'll hire Klinsmann next year then. Sunil Gulati (head of the US football association) stated that he considers Klinsmann the ideal candidate for this job and also that he had e-mail contact with him during the World Cup. So, I guess they'll wait until after that Gold Cup is played and hire him next year. Or maybe - although Klinsmann looks like the likeliest coach right now - they'll just hire someone else altogether. Who knows. I mean, I'm not even sure how much Klinsmann is interested in taking this position after his hiatus. He lives in the US and I'm sure he'll want to work as a coach again after some time, however, that doesn't necessarily mean he's willing to coach the US national team. It seems like the most logical step right now, but still, at this point it's just speculation and he could as well take on a totally different job.

He said it while hosting the ESPYs. That could have been meant comically, but afterwards he said in an interview that his words weren't aggressive but reserved. "If you'd live with me and would hear me at home, you'd knew that it was relatively reluctant."

Also, two more teams might be involved in Italian scandal.

Anyone else bothered that AC Milan is apparently being allowed to weasel their back into the UEFA cup? UEFA should simply say "Thanks, but you were sanctioned. Go away."

<edited>
(AC Milan not Inter Milan. DUH. )

Yeah I goofed that. There was also that article on Inter campaigning to have the title handed to them rather than be vacated, which bugs me a bit too. I know how important these things are, but wouldn't you rather have won it on the field than be handed it this way? Yeah I know.....

In the meantime, O'Leary is out at Ashton Villa & Juve has sold two players to Real.

Should we be starting a new thread for the upcoming season?

Heh, yep...might be a good idea for a new thread.

And not sure if I can blame Inter there...could be their only way to win a title. ;)
