I'm not hating on Superman. I'm actually a fan of the first two movies, and used to be of the comics. I'm just pointing out that fanbase along won't push Superman's BO over $200 million, because that didn't happen with Batman, another reset to a dead movie franchise.

frankly i dont know what this tells you about the movie, as you can say the exact same thing superman the movie, spiderman 1 and 2.
Both Joblo.com and The Hot Button seem to be hearing nearly identical things:
Dave Poland:
"Wells fails to mention that the IMAX preview, which will only be on IMAX screens, still has no sound and has other unfinsihed issues. There was some degree of shock amongst the media on hand about how unfinished the footage was this close to day-n-date release.
And of course, keep in mind that Wells hated Pirates 1, not even sitting through the whole film, and that was the highest grossing film of that year.
Word I am getting on Superman, which I did not see because I am in Seattle, is pretty mixed. "Too long" and "too short on geek content" are the two big complaints, followed by the comical miscasting of Kate Bosworth as a Pulitzer winner with a 6 year old child. The argument is that there is a lot of standing around posing and recalling Brando and the section, as a for instance, of him in space cruising Krypton was cut. This is not to say that the movie was reviled. I have heard none of that. No haters. But Jeffrey is, from what I gather, the biggest romancer the film has. Perhaps he pictures himself in tights and better hair.
In any case, I will go into the movie next week with open expectations and see how it goes. I hope it's great. Regardless, there is little chance that it will beat Pirates 2 this summer, which has a much wider base of established fans and a much wider attaction to under 10s and over 40s."

pirates came in a distant 3rd in 03, not first.
the fanbase comments are retarded, flat out. superman has way more appeal tot he 10-under crowd then pirates, but pirates gets the teens. adult appeal is equal i would say. but superman easily has the more "established" fanbase. hes 70 years old whilepirates is 3.

every year has one big, much hyped action sequence.
in 05 it was obi wan vs. anakin, in 04 it was spiderman on the train, in 03 it was the matrix freeway sequence, in 01 it was the pearl harbour attack, in 99 it was the pod race.
and in 06, it is the saving of the plane scene in superman. its in every trailer, cost 29 million dollars alone to produce, and is what most seem to talk about when they talk of the movie. just the other day at work (i work in a dunkin donuts while preparing for lawschool) a fellow employee came in with burger king lunch and a superman returns frisbee. talk of the movie surfaced, and led to "whenhe goes after the plane looks sweet" , ect.
more marketing, w.b. has attatched tv sport 3 to just about everything on comcasts "on demand". its hard to watch something without seeing one of these spots before it starts.

http://superherohype.com/news/supermannews.php?id=4373

Reason why they weren't enough is because M:I 3 and Poseidon did below expectations, thus less people than expected saw it, and the crowd reports from X-3 indicated that some X-Men fans are mad Singer left and booed at the trailer.

either way i think its a great idea. people will see the date and be like "well thats next week!".
the key is tv spots though. this time next week is whenthe tv spots really need to start. cause then,if theyve been seeing tv spots everywehre all week, and see superman everywhere all month, the public will already have some idea when it coming out, and all this would due is peak interest.
also this will do wonders for those who dunno it comes out on the 28th. click is tracking for a 48 million ow.

What the hell? Well...I really don't know what to make of this situation, good or bad.
what to make-the marketing campaign is huge, thats what you make of it!

Well, this has been planned out like, for atleast one month. studios plan trailer releases months before they actually come out. for instance, spidey 3 and eragon are 2 movies that each have trailer with superman and weve known about for a while.
they dont just decide 2 weeks before it opens to stick a trailer with it. they might have made this decision inearly may when mi3 and poseidon both bombed.

i honestly dont see it making that big of a difference really. at that point, tv spots will already be dominating airwaves. it might sell a few more tickets or let people know of the new release date.
otherwise in a sense its just a waste of money.
