 Kirby Puckett dead at 45 From MLB.com
Quote: It is with great sadness that we announce that baseball legend Kirby Puckett was given last rites and passed away this afternoon. The Hall of Famer was hospitalized Sunday after suffering a stroke. Forty-five-year-old Puckett, who led the Minnesota Twins to World Series titles in 1987 and 1991, wished to be an organ donor. Medical staff at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center are currently determining if that wish can be fulfilled.
Kirby's family and friends thank his fans for their thoughts and prayers.
The family is not releasing additional information or conducting interviews at this time. They thank the media for respecting their wishes.  _________________My DVD Collection

I was shocked to see just how big Puckett got in recent years. No doubt this contributed to his health problems. Just check out this picture from a year ago (and I guess he had balooned quite a bit since then):

Anyhow, it's too bad. I guess his life went downhill after being forced out of baseball. It sounded like it was tough for him to take.
Also, for what it's worth, ESPN is reporting that new information shows Kirby was 45 at the time of his death. _________________

ESPN was saying 45. And my local news station said he was 46.

Everything I read said 44, until I saw ESPN say they just discovered he was 45. I wouldn't be surprised if they change it again, though, as everyone seems to be going back and forth. I wonder why all the confusion? It seems like baseball players birthdates were pretty out in the open. Heck, every baseball card I got when I was a kid had the birthdate on the back. Perhaps Kirby lied about his age coming into the MLB, to make himself younger?
Just make the thread title, "Kirby dead at age of somewhere between 30 to 65." to be safe.  _________________

He was born in 1960, so that should be 45 if his birthday is after today.

Not that it's important whether he was 44 or 45 - I am just intrigued by why there would be any confusion, or why the HOF would have to do "research" to find a player's age??? It just seems like Big League players' birthdates (in any sport) are so common knowledge. The fact that the HOF had to do research makes me wonder if Puckett lied or falsified his age coming into the league. However, I don't see how appearing 1 year younger would make that much of a difference. _________________

Saddening. I've lived in Minnesota for my entire life and he's easily the most beloved athlete to ever play for a Minnesota team, something he did for his entire career.

Major League Baseball has had a lot of cases with players' ages, especially if they were born outside U.S. I mean even little leaguers cheat about their ages so that a 12-year old pitcher, saying he is 9, could dominate a bunch of young kids. Baseball is more susceptible because players seem to have a higher upward curve from 21 to 30 than other sports.
