Is anyone else really happy that the people who said they dont care about medals arent getting any?

Hughes was trailing behind the whole time, but paced herself so damn well. Came away with the gold after a wonderful finish. Only person to finish below 7:00 minutes in time.

Claudia Pechstein finished wonderfully behind Hughes (they were paired together) and nabbed the silver for Germany, further pulling itself ahead of the US (Canada is only one behind the US).

Canada got another silver in those ridiculous short track skating competitions, Apollo Ohno finally got a gold for the US. We're at 23 medals now, with 2 more needed to reach our goal. God, we had some many 4th place finishes, and that disgusting loss by the men's hockey team, urgh. But still, 23 I'd wish for 2 more golds, but


Austria has had an incredible Olympics! So has Sweden, best ever for both countries actually. It seems that much has come at Norway's expense, which last time had 13 golds Switzerland and Korea have had a good one too

Germany had 12, now has 11 golds, the US had 10, now has 9, Canada was 4th with 7, now has 7 too, but Russia and Austria are ahead with golds

Bode Miller is a frickin ass. He basically said the Olympics don't matter to him. All he's been doing is partying and talking about how it's all fun. Ok, you know what? Get the bloody hell off the damn team, and give your spot to someone who actually wants to be there winning medals for America. There are thousands of athletes in the US who'd love to get a chance to represent their country and would actually give a damn about being in Turin.


No wonder the Olympics have been such a sad affair for the US; with idiots like this guy, and Hedrick and Davies, what do you expect? They're not children. Grow the hell up!

I think we got another silver in short track relay!

Yeah, 24 is the total, and that will be it. The goal was 25, which the loss of the men's hockey gold will not allow us to achieve, so shame on them for all eternity Our goal was a top 3 finish in the totals.


Now, Germany is the clear #1, with 29. The US has 25. And we have 24. 2 more competitions are left: the 50km, and men's hockey. Finland or Sweden will get the hockey that should have gone to us, so they're not a threat for total. For the 50km, I think the favourites are American, Norwegians, and Russians. Whoever it is who wins, it won't make a difference for the total, unless RUssia wins the bronze hockey (won't ) and 2 50km medals.


So we did reach our goal of being among the top 3.


Bring on Vancouver I predict 30 for 2010

Czech's beating Russia 2-0 after the second, so it looks like Russia will probably lose.

Dan Roycroft could always pull the hugest shocker in the world and get a medal in 50km for us, Box.

Yeah, I know... that's impossible. Oh well.

24 medals is far more than I expected. A few days ago, I thought Canada wasn't going to come even close to the goal. I thought the Canadian Olympic Committee was being very over optimistic (so did most), so I'm pretty happy. A third place finish too is awesome. I think this propels us nicely into the 2010 Olympics.

I'm extremely happy with so many of our athletes, I mean, those women- WOW! Honestly, they should get a parade or something, because they've been the engine behind all of this.

The only really upsetting thing is the men's hockey loss, because 1) it's our game, 2) we're the defending champ and best country at it, and 3) it's the last medal to be awarded at the Olympics, and a very prestigious medal at that. So our failure is kinda more spectacular than it would be.

Having said all that- we've had 3 days were we won 4 medals, including today, with 1 gold, 2 silvers, and 1 bronze. That's amazing by any measure.


So overall I'm very happy. 2010 will rock. What I find encouraging is the fact that Canada was so often in the 4th place in so many competitions, meaning a hometown advantage or just a bit more practice could push us to more medals (with those near-misses, we'd be flirting with 30 right now, heh). Also, many of the younger players in women's hockey, etc. have shown great promise. So it should be really good.

CBC put up a list today, of all of the 4th place performances for Canadians that were all off either by like 1 hundredth of a second, or 1 hundredth of a score, and there were ten. TEN!! If those so intensely close losses had gone our way, we'd be in the 30 medal range. Also, they were virtually all men, so even though the women dominated (woohoo!) the men got really unlucky in many cirumstances. They're right there, just barely missing.

With the Olympics in Vancouver in 2010, I believe we will pull off our best Olympics ever, with a total count that I think will shock most. I think we can do it. 24 medals certainly gives support to the "Own the Podium" program we had in Canada to fund our athletes, so I think our athletes will continue to receive funds for their excellent performances this winter. I'm very happy.

Americans still get 2nd

Not really. CBC didn't do their homework. She finished 3rd in the last (or second to last) sprint event before the olympics. She wasn't the main favorite, but she is not a noone

Most gold medals, most silver medals, most overall medals. We won!!! A great olympics for us germans. Thanks to the unbeliavable biathlon events. We got 5 Gold, 4 Silver and 2 Bronze in those 10 events alone. Awesome!!

Germany, Canada, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, and South Korea had a great Olympics. Norway's was definitely disappointing, considering they're supposed to be a powerhouse, and the US did ok, but had many disappointments as well. The top 4 spots are shared by North-American/German-speaking countries, heh. Austria would have had a spectacular Olympics if not for that weird and ridiculous scandal.

The medals this year are definately way more spread out compared to the last olympics. In 2002, Germany grabbed 36 medals, US grabbed 34, and Norway grabbed 25. These three didn't completely dominate this time, like in 2002 when these 3 clearly pulled ahead from all other countries (the next best was 17 from Canada/Austria). Canada, Austria, Russia all increased from the last olympics, and Canada and Austria both set new country records in terms of medal counts. And South Korea had one hell of an Olympics this year, with 11 medals! Many other countries also increased. It's nice to see a lot of countries getting in there this year.

Yeah, she wasn't a main favourite and she is also a newcomer (2nd year on the national team, I think). It's just really, really cool to see her emerge and win a gold for Canada.

Who usually dominates the summer games? Canada and the U.S. do fairly well, I'm sure.

China will win the most in Beijing 2008, they'll do everything in their power to make sure of that


The summer superpowers are almost always the US, Russia, China, Germany, and recently Australia. Japan did very, very well in 2004, and will most likely do well again in 2008. France and the UK are good too, as are the other usual suspects (Italy, etc.), but the US/Russia/China/Germany are the big ones. Australia has in recent games shot up big time.

Canada had a bad Olympics in 2004; I'd say it was rather miserable. This one, with 24 medals, is our most successful ever, winter or summer.

nope? we don't do good at winter olympics. usually only people in the armed forces compete in sports like skiing, bob etc etc.

we like our figure skating since torville and dean won the gold in 1984- but that was a long time ago :S

its annoying for me coz i play ice hockey, and there simply isn't enough ice time give out for practicing... for example the women's top league club at my last ice rink had training from 10.30 till midnight on a tues night... and I had to give it up coz it was too late for a midweek practice- plus it took almost an hour to get to the nearest rink. so now I play for an inline hockey league.

basically i don't think we give enough prority to sport in this country, (especially women's- but don't get me started ) unless its soccer, rugby, or occaisonally athletics.

However since London won the 2012 bid we are gonna have a big sporting drive to get people interested and hopefully have some half decent athletes in the games.

we always do a lot better in the summer games than the winter... we are glad we got one!

until next time... you guys are gonna kick ass in vancouver...i really wanna save up to go there... only 4 years..

I think the 2012 London Games will make a huge difference for Britain's future Olympics. I'm curious to see how the UK will do in 2008, although I suspect that China's and Japan's increased performances might affect Europe's and America's standings. However, 6 years is a long time in sports, and a lot can happen, so we'll see
