Post Any expectations on Unleashed?
So I'm watching SNL last night and see an ad for Unleashed, which I'd never heard of. I'm no Jet Li fan or even HK martial arts in general but this ad looked pretty cool and impressive, I liked what I saw. Not groundbreaking or original but sure looked fun. And had Morgan Freeman to boot, he's always aces.

Looking at it's IMDB profile http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0342258/

I learn it is written by Luc Besson (La Femme Nikita, Leon, The Fifth Element), and directed by Louis Leterrier, the director of The Transporter, a movie that while it didn't work for many people still got noticed for its flair and energy. Bob Hoskins has a supporting role in Unleashed, good to see him back on the scene.

Since I haven't seen any threads on it here, I guess it isn't getting a wide release but sure looks interesting. Do you think it might make some money in an arthouse/foreign small release movie sense?

I think it's in like 1750 theaters as of now. This was one of the criticisms that I got for my ballpark predictions on the front page, because I think it's gonna tank pretty hard.

I dont know the vibe is that the action is good, but the rest, well here's a quote "When Jet Li tries to emote, my kidney starts to implode. Please stop him."

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/unleashed/?critic=all

The drama aspect just doesnt work it seems like.

Well, Harry Knowles said Morgan Freeman was nearly all time best peformance of his, way better them Million Dollar Baby, but he's not quite THE most trustworthy. ;) I think it does look pretty awesome though, and I have seen the marketing campaign be quite backloaded. Not a lot of trailers, but TV spots by the dozen.

Yeah, I think it looks good aswell, i've been looking forward to it since I saw the first trailer, but what the hell does Harry Knowles know, im pretty sure he hated MDB to begin with so obviously he'd make a stupid comment like that, I highly doubt his performance is better in Unleashed then in MDB.

Harry Knowles didn't even see Million Dollar Baby. He was ranting and raving over the Oscars, and was talking about it, and you could tell he was clueless about what happened in the film. He even had some of his "facts" wrong. I don't even go to that site anymore because I got sick of the lack of credibility.

It's still early, but with 64% at RT and an average rating of 6.6, looks like Unleashed could be the first fresh hollywood movie that Jet Li has starred in.

Archie, its going to perform like a sinking rock. Potentially poetic, but ultimately...

Horrible marketing and distribution (potntially), this is not Jet Li's highest point in the US (that would be beginning of last year), and it seems to be this odd mix of a Tarantino S&M scene dragged out for an entire movie, mixed with some martial arts, mixed with some gand violence/mafioso.

The movie isn't quite calling my name yet, but most likely because I've seen the early trailer once, and heard little else. The fact that I've heard little else here, where Hustle, House, and Hero all performed really well (and had way better marketing) is a bad sign. Also, the 1750 theatres thing, if it is true, will kill it. Have they learned nothing from the quick wide release of Hustle? Well received and still a quick drop.

This looks really good, but it is being undermakreted big time. The distributor is dropping a ball on this one and I don't even know why. Because it doesn't star a "gangsta rapper" like some of Li's recent flicks did and is not produced by Joel Silver? :???:

Looks like it'll become Li's best reviewed Hollywood flick so far (Lethal Weapon 4 possibly aside).

Still, looking at all Jet Li flicks so far, all of them had a $5,000+ opening weekend PTA. I don't see why this one should be any different. The final theatre count will be at least 1,900, I think, maybe even close to 2,000. A gross of $10 million this weekend is almost assured, in my opinion. I am going with around an $11 milion weekend as of now.

Could have been much more, though.

I would lik to know what is meant by the above bolded text.

- Unleased trailers have been shown in the theater.

- Unleased has had alot of tv commercials.

- Jet Li has done the tv talk shows

- I even heard Jet LI promoting the movie on the radio.

So I am just wondering as Lecter is in Germany - how does he know and how is the film being badly marketing in the USA.

*************************************************************

Note as I am typing this I just sat a tv commercial for Unleased.

The trailer is barely being shown before any of the movies shown in US theatres yet. I do read crowd reports and I believe I saw only one reporting the trailer before a movie.

The estimated theatre count used to be at around 2,200, then it went down to 2,000 and ultimately to 1,750. That doesn't show the confidence of the studio in this movie and little confidence usually is not followed by huge marketing.

In most theatres it is getting only one screen (actually in all of them, except for really really huge ones, like Scott's).

Cosidering the fact that this one looks better than Li's previous US flicks and is being better reviewed and considering the releases of previous Li flicks, the studio drops the ball on this one and apparently started a last-minute marketing a wekk or two ago, as TV spots start to appear now.

Trust me, despite living in Germany, I know a thing or two about marketing and box-office.

The trailer is barely being shown before any of the movies shown in US theatres yet. I do read crowd reports and I believe I saw only one reporting the trailer before a movie.

* So you are starting this on crowd reports - but as I said above this has been advertised on the tv and radio alot.

* Also how do the trailers work - and how do they get them into theaters?

The estimated theatre count used to be at around 2,200, then it went down to 2,000 and ultimately to 1,750. That doesn't show the confidence of the studio in this movie and little confidence usually is not followed by huge marketing.

In most theatres it is getting only one screen (actually in all of them, except for really really huge ones, like Scott's).

* Do they or the marketing team have a say in this or is it the theater owners who decide what they want.

Cosidering the fact that this one looks better than Li's previous US flicks and is being better reviewed and considering the releases of previous Li flicks, the studio drops the ball on this one and apparently started a last-minute marketing a wekk or two ago, as TV spots start to appear now.

* The tv commericals have been on for awhile and yes now as the movie approaches, it is being stepped up alittle - don't all movies add in the weeks of the opening. And some even add during the first week - they say see the #1 actiion / comedy .....

Trust me, despite living in Germany, I know a thing or two about marketing and box-office.

* I am just curious where and how you are getting your marketing facts and then other comments like the theaters, etc.

This weekend I was planning on seeing MONSTER IN LAW and KICKING AND SCREAMING but when I found out my other local theater is getting UNLEASHED and MILLIONS, I said I'm definetely going to see those two instead! I can't wait for either of them, they both look fantastic!

64% fresh
18 good reviews, 10 bad reviews

Anything above 50% for an action movie is surprising. I was so sure it will end up rotten with just something below 45%

I still don't think it will do that well, but I see an opening of around $8.5-$9.0 million. I'd give it the title of "Bomb of the Week", but I think that will go to Mindhunters.

This just seems so generic. I think people are just going to pass it off as another martial arts movie with a slight twist.

I don't know where the whole dropping the ball thing is coming from either. If it weren't for the low theater count I'd guess this would be a 20 million opener. I've seen a huge amount of TV and radio ads for this, the trailer has been featured with quite a bit of the movies I've seen, and a lot of guys at my school really want to check this one out. It's not going to be the hit it could've been, but I don't know why everyone thinks it'll bomb. Jet Li is just as popular as ever, as is Morgan Freeman having won himself an Oscar. Li's also an incredibly steady draw, with every single movie of his (save Black Mask, which was REALLY dumped and still pulled off almost 5 million from less then 1000 theaters) has gotten at least $6,000 PTA, though Hero just had a 8,800 K PTA. The fact that Assault on Precinct 13 just came out on DVD and made 150% more opening day then it's entire theatrical run and featured the trailer before the start of it is a good sign as well. I went with 12/32, but I could see this suprising and maybe even beating Monster-in-Law.
