Post Monster-in-Law Will Gross Over 25 Million This Weekend!
It might even be #1. I still have some figuring to do, as it's only Monday, but the over 25M is a certainty. I can explain, but really, wouldn't it be easier just to agree this time? I have some Kicking and Screaming stuff to weigh, and that PG rating against Monster-in-Law's PG-13 will definitely play a big part (especially since there are no new kids movies on the market), but after I weigh it all, I'll be able to tell you about how high and low the top 2 films will be. Unleashed and Mindhunters are waiting to be forgotten, so they will be out of the equation.

The people that saw the sneak preview said it was quite funny, I could see it doing great.

Oh, that's just dandy. Now, I have a predicting plague named after me. ](*,)

Anyways... I wouldn't be shocked if Monster-in-Law tops the weekend, but I'm pretty sure that Kicking and Screaming will.

Well...

I don't know, I'm not getting that feeling. I do think $20M (and #1, maybe) is possible, though.

Libs, two times now, I've tried to pull you back from high predictions and couldn't do it, and you suffered for it. Now, I want you to pay close attention to the case I'll be presenting throughout the week, and I think you will come around to seeing why I believe this. It's a crowd pleaser. The WOM from those previews is going to do wonders to a market that needs a crowd pleaser after this kind of drought. Trust me, and kill me later if I'm wrong.

I'll say high teens-low twenties. I agree that the market is primed for a film like this, but J.Lo has never opened a film above $20 million, and we are not at the height of her popularity right now. If it wasn't for good WOM and those brilliantly timed sneaks yesterday, i'd say it would struggle to top $15 million this weekend. Also, rom-coms are not known for their big openings, but for their good legs. I'll go with $19 million for now. Just short of $20.

*puts the breaks on own post*

I was under the impression this had some good WOM going for it, but this is bad news. No way this clears $20 million this weekend. I'll go with $17 million....for now.

The reviews are very bad, but the WOM is great, in my opinion.

Is that possible, though? I mean, you and loyal hated it...

Oh, yes, I hated it. A lot.

But, I'm not basing my prediction off of my opinion of the film or I'd have it at a $3 million opening weekend.

The crowd reactions were just fantastic. Even jmart007, who also hated it, agrees.

Yes, and I am one who rarely hates a movie (See my 2004 list). If I had a say I would want this to make less than Gigli did.

This is the only time ever though where I have hated a film so much, only to see that people were clapping at the end of it. Clapping in general is rare too, at least in the theaters I have seen films at. The last time I saw a film where a good chunk of the people in theater clapped, was when I saw Matrix Reloaded.

I do think though that the movie will do well this weekend. I just hope that Kicking and Screaming will be it out, but I am not so sure about that.

Couldnt the crowd reaction be a little misleading because its from sneak previews. Most sneaks do have lots of good crowd reactions too even though its only one week before it hits the theater

I don't think people purposly try to laugh because it's a sneak preview.

They hated it, but then again, they are not quite the demographics the movie's aiming at  If it wasn't for the bet, Zingaling wouldn't have been ever caught dead in that movie.

Having said that, if the reviews stay under 20% at RT tis will result in a box-office backlash. You may say the reviews don't matter, but really, movies with reviews THAT bad, rarely ever get big openings. Also Lopez has never opened a movie that high either. Her last May openings were Enough and Angel Eyes. Both were flops. Now this one is a different category, sure and it has Fonda, but Fonda can't carry the movie on her own and Lopez is not exactly a well-beloved actress.

With a 3,000+ theatres release, it should still have a good opening considering the current state of the marketplace. I see around $20 million at the moment, but no more.

My screening's audience loved it and applauded at the end, too. I don't expect the critics to be kind to J-Lo and Jane. Both have made their enemies.

Is there that much awareness for this movie? Other then the sneaks, has there been significant marketing? I think I probably am the target market for this film, but I've only seen two commercials for it, and no trailers. I've seen ten times that for Kicking & Screaming.

It might only do $18 million or so but how can it NOT be #1. That's a given!

It's been the opposite for me. I haven't seen much Kicking and Screaming at all, but plenty of the other. Jane and J-Lo have also been on the latenight talkshow circuit, but besides his upcoming SNL hosting gig, I haven't seen Ferrell out promoting it.

Well, her only movie that was rated as low by the critics as this one is, was The Wedding Planner that opened at #1 to around $13.5 million.
