I think the problem is Joaquin fancies himself a groundbreaking auteur so he probably insisted on something unexpected for the sequel, but Todd Phillips is.... not that. Like, he's not Paul Thomas Anderson, he's not even Aronofsky. This is the director of The Hangover. It somehow worked for the first Joker, but that was more straightforward than this appears to be. So it sounds like the movie bit off way more than it could chew and despite the actors trying their hardest it's just a mess or boring.

A lot of truth written here regardless of whether the film does well or bombs.

 Re: Joker 2 predictions
Fuck the snobbishness, I’d like to see PTA or Aronosfky attempt a Hangover or Old School. Beloved comedies are an almost impossible art form. Some of the best films have come from people with roots in comedy. As much as I didn’t like Joker, I can’t deny the incredible performance from Phoenix. And he’s a two time winner, I think he’ has justified his eccentricities.

 Re: Joker 2 predictions
Presales have just started. While its really early to judge it, its initial showtimes are under whelming. Lower than Beetlejuice. Presales look terrible to me. Worse than Flash last year. Feels like Marvels like at this point.

 Re: Joker 2 predictions
Joker 2019 I thought sort of crept up fast closer to its release. I think with the start of school / university, and Beetlejuice mega breakout now this isn't going to start out of the gate well. First one adjusts to $400M+ total now and I don't think anyone is thinking of buying tickets 1 month out for Joker this week.
I know it will be divisive as a musical, but also the "standing ovations" at these festivals are getting a bit comical that I'm reading about. How many standing ovation movies at SXSW ended up flopping at the box office in a major way? Definitely looking like it will be hard to match the first one but a lot of people are going to show up OW. Festival sentiment to box office translation for this still up in the air at least for OW though it takes buzz away for sure it ain't doing Marvels level!

People are gonna blame the musical aspect , but I think still think this movie was headed for huge numbers before it was revealed to be a meta takedown of people who liked the first movie.

I don’t think this info is widespread though, it’s certainly not in the trailers IIRC, and not many people are reading specific reviews of the movie

 Re: Joker 2 predictions
I still see so many memes of Phoenix's Joker, it's hard to believe they could mess this up with an instant iconic portrayal. I'm still going big on the opening weekend at least.

"Audacious, Bold, and Beautiful"
That is on posters over here, even more prominent than the title. I get a feeling it's going to overcome the recent skepticism and make a splash.

 Re: Joker 2 predictions
That’s steep, more 20-40% drop off which was pretty much expected. Historically films that hit max potential OW, have been dropping the same for 20+ years. Reviews are pretty much the same so we’ll see how much the first grabbed out of casual interest first time around

 Re: Joker 2 predictions
Usually leggy films have more demand opening weekend and then drop off quicker. Joker was a beloved film, a huge drop would be unusual

 Re: Joker 2 predictions
I cant see this dropping below 50m OW. It may dip a bit but to something like $75-80m. The Joker was universally loved so i cant see audiences abandoning it until after OW. But we’ll see.

Joker isn’t a film that a 6 multiplier, it reached max potential from the start. Joker was not beloved, what the hell are you smoking, polarizing at best, but it was a film people talked about with a well known character because more than half loved it, then had awards buzz. Everything went right . Like said a max potential audience film. A film doing well is as much as the environment it comes out in. Have some common sense. Having said that Joker 2 will do more than fine, even if it has to settle with 500-800WW

 Re: Joker 2 predictions
It had really good legs for a superhero movie that opened to near 100m for sure. Seems pretty well liked to me.
This is coming from someone who didn’t like the original

 Re: Joker 2 predictions
Buzz seems to be there but muted, perhaps good reviews (from the GA) help get it a strong opening wknd IM (unlikely), thinkin 55m-75m. Hoping walkups go crazy and it still finds a way over 100m.

 Re: Joker 2 predictions
Oh, come on guys. It's not doing $50m opening weekend. $86m for me
I actually just had to check its Mojo page. For some reason I thought the first opened to $132m, lol. It opened to $96m!

 Re: Joker 2 predictions
Audience reactions have started and apparently it's not good, and also actively hostile to fans of the first one. I'm feeling a $70M ish OW followed by catastrophically bad legs. Will probably do a lot better overseas though where audiences are more immune to bad reviews.
Even the off-DCU Joker couldn't avoid DC being cursed.

 Re: Joker 2 predictions
When I first they were doing a musical with Gaga I was picturing this big romance and song and dance movie. I guess it would be hard to fit Phoenix's Joker into that, but maybe it would have stood out more if it was that different from the first.
