Mission: Impossible $19,500,000 -64% $118,753,000

With a 5X multiplier for the rest of its run: $196.75M. Would need a 5.17X for $200M
With a 4X: $177.25M
With a 3X: $157.75M

MI may miss $170M and go behind IJ. A 3.5 sounds realistic ($167.5M). Likely lost at least 26% of its box office it would have gotten otherwise as a $225M performer due to B+O.

Also, a whopping 26% of Oppenheimer's gross was IMAX!

We only reached #4 biggest weekend of all time, not #2. behind Endgame, Infinity War and The Force Awakens.

If Barbie had Imax screens and no Oppenheimer could it have gotten QB's record opening record...? Crazy cause I don't think any other $100m+ opener had no Imax.

MI got past $200M and global tally is now at $370.8M. Add in another $46M domestic it gets to $416.8M. Maybe $650M finish? Fallout made $791,657,398 so now I'm wondering, even with global grosses, will MI lose money ($291M production budget, $80M+ marketing)? For comparison, FastX finished with $704,709,660. I currently have MI headed for #12 for the year domestic of films out so far (behind IJ, Elemental, etc.) so would be a bit shocking to see a star having the #1 film of the year and then their follow up not even making the top 15 for the year.

Sound needs a 4.74X multiplier from here on out to get to $200M. We are looking to have at least 9 $200M+ movies this year with Aug - Dec movies still going.

I believe Barbie is now also the top opening weekend for original movie (non-sequel, prequel, reimagining, reboot, part of universe), beating The Hunger Games' $152,535,747.

As I said on Friday, this is pretty unprecedented territory with two new movies performing so well in the same weekend that they begin bumping up against each other, so it's very possible they're both close to maxing out, especially since the rest of the market is still relatively active in a way it rarely is when a single mega-opener comes along. But I will be curious to see how they hold today - fingers crossed for sub-15% drops?

Presales where i tracked and across multiple sites are around 10% down from yesterday. I am hoping for low teens drop for both.

$235M! Just astounding numbers from both. And watching where these two go from here is such a terrific way to end the summer of flops, giving both us and Hollywood hope for the future (unlike one of the movies which made me feel like we're all doomed :-p)

Let's hope combined they can hit a 3 multiplier of 705 million.

Only movie probably that had a worse weekend than MI, Joy Ride.

Dropped down to 335 losing -2,485 which is #9 worst theater drop of all time. 87% box office drop from last weekend. Ouch!

I'm sorry but I find it hilarious the idea of the kind of audience excited to see Barbie also watching Oppenheimer on the same day.

There are pros and cons to watching either one first. LOL

Probably the earlier $100m openers like Spider-man, Pirates 2 and maybe Spider-man 3? But from TDK onwards yes unlikely.

What an incredible weekend. Truly a cultural phenomenon well beyond BO bulletin boards and social media.

Clearly one of the strangest but coolest weekends at the cinema ever. It's hard to know where we go from here.

Younger audience jumped on Minions 2. Got people to pair up and watch a Barbie and WW2 biopic.

Migration + The Color Purple a must see combo? Or A Quiet Place 3 + KFP4?

Will be very interesting to see what Hollywood tries pushing post Barbenheimer. Know it will be super cringe but will have all the execs and film teams talking.

Hollywood for more will push for more combos but likely fail more often than not. They just wont have the right hooks and it wont feel organic as this one.

For those of you who watched these films - what trailers were shown in front of each?

I think last year’s Minions and Barbenheimer show that to be successful with Gen Z, you need a successful meme. Marketers need to find ways to stealthily plant memes on the internet and start buzz through these means.

Why did none of the virality and memes translate for Morbius?

I don't think viral is the pure ingredient here. There have been stars with big social followings too whose movies flopped even those with movies with critical acclaim.

Minions 2 also wasn't a critical darling. What was Morbius missing that didn't translate to box office? Quality mostly?

165 and 82m. I think in a slightly more open market I think these 2 could have combined to 270m.
