Minions 2 What Went Right
For some reason Minions 2 is probably breaking 100m OW even though DM3 couldn't. Minions had incredibly poor WOM among adults unlike the DM films which had positive reviews. I thought DM 3 underperformed due to Minions WOM and the franchise overstaying its welcome, but the Minions performance is showing that's not the case.

Re: Minions 2 What Went Right
For some reason this movie has really good buzz among Gen Z, I've seen a lot of stuff relating to Minions on social media. Guess this was just the right time for people to want a Minions movie.

Re: Minions 2 What Went Right
Like I said in another thread a while back, this could lose 1/3 of the admissions of the last film and still do $300M+. LY flopping helped as did the long weekend as the only big movie out for families.

Re: Minions 2 What Went Right
I knew this was breaking our and beating LY a few weeks ago based on what my kids wanted to see.
DM3 may have underperformed but it’s well liked and this as a followup is fortunate. Especially as the BO is booming again. Their needs to be a big summer animated film and this is it.

Re: Minions 2 What Went Right
In the past, family franchises that were really kid-focused that ran regularly too long eventually had their child audience age out of the series and fail to bring in new generations (Shrek, Ice Age). However, as noted above the franchise has somehow managed to maintain a hold on people that grew up with the movies, and has remained popular with new children. Toy Story is an exception I guess, but 3 was basically a legasequel with how much time passed, and 4 managed to repeat that trick. The Despicable Me/Minions franchise having five movies in a row make $250M+ in America in the span of 12 years is...extremely impressive.

Like, I don't believe people were clamoring for and couldn't wait to see Gru's origin story. It's just the turn of events that have led to an animated family blockbuster being the easy-watch-summer-movie, particularly after Lightyear was problematic in many different ways. A few movies could have been this movie. Minions: The Rise of Gru just happened to be it. Kudos to Universal.

Minions 2: What Went Right
I think the theme this year is people want bland and inoffensive right now, and this is about a bland and inoffensive as they come

Re: Minions 2: What Went Right
1) It's a simple movie where people know exactly what they're getting out of it.
2) Lightyear's failure opened up the family market.
3) Memes go brr.

Minions 2 is part of a known, popular, money making franchise.
Lightyear apparently was not....according to the audience reception at the box office.

Re: Minions 2: What Went Right
It’s the safest choice out there for families to go back. Lightyear was hard to explain to kids 8 and below.

They are little kids Black Panther/Top Gun Maverick while at the same time managed to have enough teen buzz and adult appeal

The whole meme Tik Tok thing took this in the direction of being a big hit.
A new Shrek movie would be huuuuge tbh.

Re: Minions 2: What Went Right
It is more than just inflation. The Rise of Gru offered a reliably uncomplicated, easily digestible, four-quadrant experience after a tough two years ... something that Lightyear couldn't. And I really do believe its success is tied to Lightyear. The boycott of it by some led to pent up demand for a similar animated movie, and the Minions sequel was there to clear up.

Re: Minions 2: What Went Right
So Minions: The Rise of Gru is now just $1.24 million away from Despicable Me 2 after a $939,915 fourteenth weekend. Lyle comes out next weekend, but even with a few $300-600k weekends it will get there.
