Re: GOP 2024
Really starting to think Pence is going to do much better than people expect. He is Trump but with none of the drama and much more respect for government. He runs, I think he is going to be a major challenger.

Re: GOP 2024
Possibly. I do think we are starting to see the mystique of Trump wearing off.
I also think there is a very real possibility that DeSantis does the unthinkable and loses this November. His stunt with Disney is wildly unpopular down here and pretty much only caters to people who were going to vote Republican no matter what. However I do think a strategy for the GOP post Trump has been to lean in on hat appeal to churn up the base to go out and vote

I'd be shocked if he lost reelection. Would not shock me if Florida and Texas switched and Florida became the deep red state and Texas became the swing state in the next few decades

Re: GOP 2024
All the Trumpers I know are still fanatically devoted to him. They're convinced none of this bad stuff would be happening if he was still around. And for them, I guess it wouldn't be. If Trump went on tv and used words like special military operation, and said the media was blowing the Ukraine situation out of proportion just to make him look bad, and that it was the new democratic hoax and that there were very fine people on both sides ... they'd eat that shit up. Same with the Afghanistan exit. Same shit would have happened, but in their minds it would have been "the greatest military withdrawal in history." He is absolutely winning the Republican nomination.

Re: GOP 2024
Imo Trump is the only Republican candidate able to lose the general election in 2024. The polished Trumps a la DeSantis or Pence are much more dangerous as they share the same reactionary beliefs but know how to better sell them to the wider population.

Re: GOP 2024
I think that right now, and especially by 2024, these cancel/culture wars will be beyond played out. Most people are beyond tired of the drama and that remains a gigantic strong point of Biden. DeSantis wear with Disney makes him too polarizing. Pence's actions on 1/6 and during the inauguration earned him an enormous amount of goodwill among the one Republicans of the country, as well the open-minded moderate wing. Like Biden, Pence's communication and personality is bland and boring, but this is largely what I think people are looking for out of their leaders.
Pence/Haley would be the GOPs version of Biden/Harris and I suspect would do quite well.

Re: GOP 2024
DeSantis continues to feel like the definition of "flavor of the month". The primaries on 1 1/2 years away, I don't see the staying power there.
Trump's relevance in that time frame is even more difficult to determine, but I think DT's appeal will be well below what many are thinking it will be. His base has completely stopped expanding, rather it is shrunk greatly. Similar to the Dems ganging up on Bernie in 2020, I suspect the GOP will find an alternative to DT if he opts to run again. Trump is going to be extremely heavy and direct fire from some credible wings of his party. He has virtually no true respected allies left. But above all, very few people want the Trump reality show back on their TVs every day.

Re: GOP 2024
Trump is a losing hand in 2024 if he gets the nomination, and McConnell doesn’t like losing.

I could see Trump endorsing Pompeo if he doesn’t run.

I guess now DeSantis is withholding money from the Tampa Bay Rays for tweeting for gun reform. Remember when people thought the Republicans were the party of free speech?

Well, no corporation has a right to public money. It's a shame he's using this power to push forward such a reactionary agenda but I'm sure glad the state has the discretionary right not to fund or sponsor corporations or people who spew racist, homophobic or antisemitic crap without it being considered an abridgement of their rights.

The Rays refused to wear Pride Flags on their uniforms. That should get them back into Desantis' good graces.

Good on the Rays. People shouldn't be forced to wear patches of any sort if they have nothing to do with your job, let alone ones that go against the teachings of your religion.

Re: GOP 2024
DeSantis is now the only governor to jot pre-order FDA approved vaccines for small children. Horrific for someone I use to support and a far cry from the state that use to be a leader in vaccine access. Dude is on a populist power trip.
