Interesting that it became the 4th biggest anime film ever in Germany behind the first three Pokémon. Was it just thanks to a wider release or something? (Hello, Mark!) Would have predicted a Miyazaki film or something else. Well, I am just far less than grain of sand in front of Mark . I have Pokemon (€13,876,881), Pokemon 2 (€8,143,517), Pokemon 3 (€3,077,180). Among Ghibil films, Spirited Away at €1,931,622, Your Name (€1,163,316) &Broly (€854,178) Demon Slayer being a regular release at €589,774 Jujutsu Kaisen Movie 0 is at €2,439,835. Well, DIGIMON: THE MOVIE did €3,031,084 back in 2001...

Huge second weekend for DC25. It's either just shy of the franchise record, or might have taken it.

Thanks, Here are the comparisons via mimorin (including independant theatres) for the first three days of each film: First Part, Second Part, Change (% increase) Day 1: 38029, 42914, +4885 (+13%) Day 2: 32032, 36472, +4440 (+14%) Day 3: 24330, 24504, +174 (+1%) Using the same average ticket price for Friday and the weekend that I previously calculated for the First Part, I'd estimate that the weekend earned ~93,916,000 yen with a 3 day total of ~150,861,000 yen or so.

Re: Japan Box-Office: Biggest Second Weekends (Update)
Thanks for sharing that, ultimatemegax!
I will caution that the usual locations have been accounting for a much larger share of nationwide ticket sales, or rural locations have been accounting for a much lower share of nationwide ticket sales, or it's been some combination of both for the past 6 months or so (especially in 2022 proper).
This doesn't impact smaller releases like Free! The Final Stroke as much, but it's just something to consider in case those gains above wind up being smaller than expected.

Shin Chan 2022 had a great improvement by at least ¥43M from prev. film. I was worried when OD was some 50% behind the former. Well, weekend perform well. FB3 also had a great hold ¥332M / ¥2.77B Thanks Mark, then it's 5th highest grossing anime film in Germany

Re: Japan Box-Office: Biggest Second Weekends (Update)
Yeah, great weekend all-around!
Detective Conan 25 breaks the franchise second weekend record (Biggest Second Weekends updated above) and continues to track ahead of the highest grossing film in the franchise (DC23) after two weeks in release. Don't want to guarantee anything yet, but it's looking likely that it'll become the highest grossing film in the franchise if GW delivers.
Fantastic Beasts 3 continues to hold well, and so long as it delivers over Golden Week, looks set to become Hollywood's biggest film since 2019 and perhaps their first blockbuster since then, too.
Crayon Shin-chan 30 delivers one of the better openings in the franchise in quite some time, I believe. And Kanroji, its Friday was only weaker than last year's film because last year's film was delayed from its annual April spot to July due to COVID (weekdays are much stronger from mid-July to the end of August).
Sing 2 and The Last 10 Years are edging closer to ¥3 billion, and with Golden Week coming up soon, both should get there.
Jujutsu Kaisen 0 entered that 4-way tie as the 15th Highest Grossing Film Ever, which it'll break and be the sole film in that spot.
Excellent weekend before Golden Week begins (this Friday!).

The Final Stroke Part II: ¥179,881,660 (184 sites) Part I final is ¥700M per 2021 Japan Yearly Book while Distributor Numbers are at ¥691M. So, Part II should exceed ¥1000M. Thanks Corpse! Re: Japan Box-Office: Biggest Second Weekends (Update)
Thanks for sharing Free!'s three day figure! I was just about to post the Weekend Actuals and 2022 Charts when you did. Its weekend will still be estimated, but it appears to have come in above ¥100 million based on that 3-day there. Its admissions will be estimated based on the last film.
It's annoying that numbers (and lack of admissions, I believe) for this series, and other "smaller" releases like it aren't reported normally, especially when they do respectable numbers!

Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Actuals (04/23-24)
Weekend Actuals (04/23-24) 01 (01) ¥894,350,450 ($7.01 million), -35%, ¥3,648,466,350 ($28.8 million), Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween (Toho) WK2 02 (02) ¥332,189,490 ($2.60 million), -34%, ¥2,771,090,800 ($22.1 million), Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (Warner Bros.) The Final Stroke - Part 2 (Shochiku) NEW 05 (03) ¥x86,018,990 ($674,000), -23%, ¥2,861,007,140 ($23.4 million), Sing 2 (Toho-Towa) WK6 06 (08) ¥x45,944,960 ($360,000), +28%, ¥297,937,400 ($2.3 million), Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?! (Asmik Ace) WK3 07 (05) ¥x41,674,530 ($327,000), -28%, ¥2,793,602,820 ($23.5 million), The Last 10 Years (Warner Bros.) WK8 08 (06) ¥x34,660,050 ($272,000), -36%, ¥2,498,689,600 ($20.7 million), Doraemon: Nobita's Little Star Wars 2021 (Toho) WK8 09 (04) ¥x31,832,500 ($249,000), -45%, ¥1,442,192,600 ($11.7 million), Mr. Osomatsu (Toho) WK5 10 (07) ¥x30,260,270 ($237,000), -37%, ¥313,897,470 ($2.5 million), Tonbi (Kadokawa) WK3 11 (10) ¥x19,884,400 ($156,000), -28%, ¥13,500,530,240 ($120.4 million), Jujutsu Kaisen 0 (Toho) WK18
>Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween dominates in its second weekend, breaking the franchise second weekend record. The 25th entry in the series sold an outstanding 624,000 admissions in its sophomore frame, bringing its ten-day admissions up to 2,545,879. It's tracking 2% ahead of 2019's Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire (the highest-grossing film in the franchise) after two weeks, and with a less competitive Golden Week holiday period coming up next week, it should be able to improve upon that lead further. So, its chances of becoming the highest-grossing film in the franchise appear pretty good right now, and I'd expect a finish around ¥9.5 billion (~$75 million) and around 7 million admissions.
>Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore holds steady in second place, selling a further 215,992 admissions over its third weekend, bringing its three-week admissions up to 1,850,596 admissions. It should catch Spider-Man: No Way Home next weekend, or very shortly into next week, thanks go Golden Week. And not long after that, it'll outgross NWH's total to become the highest-grossing Hollywood film since 2019. And if it's comfortably above ¥4 billion (say, ¥4.2 billion or more) after May 8th, there's a good chance it reaches the ¥5 billion (~$40 million) blockbuster milestone.
>Crayon Shin-chan: Mononoke Ninja Chinpuden debuts nicely in third place (second in admissions), selling 253,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 363 screens, and 279,980 over its first three-days in release. It's hard to compare its opening to last year's film since that one was delayed from April to July (much different months), so films released in 2019 and earlier will serve as better comparisons. And in doing that, this opening is 8% higher than 2019's film, and 15% lower than 2018's film. Interestingly though, the 2019 film outgrossed the 2018 film, so despite being a 30 entry film franchise, there can still be some differences in legs. Golden Week doesn't have too much to offer this year, so I'd expect some of the better legs in the franchise this year. Let's aim for ¥2 billion.
>Free! The Final Stroke - Part 2's weekend figure is an an estimated figure based on its three-day coming in ~19.2% higher than anticipated based on its admissions at the usual locations versus the last film. Its three-day actual comes in an impressive 31% higher than Part 1. I'll update its weekend gross when the actual is (hopefully) released in a day or so.
>Sing 2 is holding just well enough to ensure it gets over the ¥3 billion (~$25 million) milestone.
>Likewise, The Last 10 Years is doing just enough to keep the ¥3 billion milestone in its sights, and with the help of Golden Week, it should get there as well. It's a little less likely than Sing 2 to get there, but it's doable with its current earnings going into one of the three major holiday periods of the year.
>Jujutsu Kaisen 0 finally falls out of the Top 10 in its 18th-weekend, but it accomplished a huge feat by becoming the 15th Highest-Grossing Film of All-Time! (Well, a four-way tie in the position, but it's broken that as of the time of this being posted.) Its admissions are now up to 9,627,767. Its run is coming to and end soon, although Golden Week will give it a sort of farewell bump. Expect a finish around ~¥13.6 billion ($121.2 million) and ~9.7 million admissions. A 2021 release, but included in the 2022 Eiren year, it's almost guaranteed to be the biggest film of the year.
NOTE: Yes, USD figures look lower than normal with these figures. In case it was missed in previous posts, the JPY (Yen) has weakened tremendously due to the strength of the US Dollar (massive inflation in the US versus Japan's market where inflation hasn't been much of a thing in almost 30 years) in recent months, and is nearing 1990s level of exchange rates. So... USD (Dollar) figures are going to be lower than we're used to seeing over the last 20+ years.

Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (04/23-24); Charts Update
Golden Week 2022 Schedule:
April 29th (Friday: Showa Day-National Holiday) April 30th (Saturday: Weekend) May 1st (Sunday: Weekend, National Movie Discount Day) May 2nd (Monday: Aeon Cinema Discount Day) May 3rd (Tuesday: Constitution Memorial Day-National Holiday) May 4th (Wednesday: Ladies' Day, Toho Cinema Discount Day, Greenery Day-National Holiday) May 5th (Thursday: Children's Day-National Holiday)
Monday is the only "normal" day this Golden Week holiday period this year. It'll be the weakest day of the period, but should still perform above average. Every other day of the period will essentially be as strong as a Saturday or Sunday. I'll post daily estimates for the holiday period.
Golden Week 2022 should be quite strong as all four national holidays fall on weekdays this year, which makes both the weekdays strong (obviously) as well as keeping the weekend strong as normal (and the 1st is Sunday, so it's a pseudo-holiday itself!). The date-arrangement is very ideal for the box-office this year. It'll mostly be holdover dominate (Conan, Fantastic Beasts, Crayon Shin-chan), although there is Radiation House: The Movie (based on the Fuji TV drama) and the live-action xxxHolic movie opening on the 29th. Radiation House is one to watch being a Toho release, but it will probably be limited to its TV audience (however... there isn't much this GW for adults, so it might branch out). xxxHolic should almost exclusively appeal to the anime/manga base, so I don't expect too much from it.
Dr. Strange 2 is also opening, but not until May 4th, so it's largely missing the holiday period. It's opening on perhaps the biggest day of the entire holiday period, so that's good, but it's missing a lot and will probably be really, really frontloaded by going from two holidays to nothing the rest of its run. Disney should have just released it on April 29th. They know by now, surely, that piracy is almost non-existent in Japan, if that was a concern. Sony's done it in the past, to great results, with Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, releasing them at the beginning of GW. Others have too, but these are two notable examples.

Re: Japan Box-Office: Highest Grossing April Releases
New chart! Beginning with April, whenever a film earns over ¥5 billion (blockbuster milestone), or is on track to do so, I'll be posting its release month's list of Highest Grossing Films (1980-).
Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween is currently tracking ahead of Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire after two weeks (+2%), so will it outgross it and make a run at the ¥10 billion (uber-blockbuster) milestone to become the first film in the franchise and the first animated release in April to reach it?
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is possibly going to crack the list, too, as it appears on track to get really close to / a bit over ¥5 billion. We'll probably know for certain when Golden Week concludes.
Highest Grossing April Releases (1980-):
¥12.40 billion ($109.7 million) / 8.94 million - Beauty and the Beast (2017) ¥11.80 billion ($142.8 million) / 7.59 million - Alice in Wonderland (2010) ¥9.37 billion ($85.5 million) / 7.26 million - Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire (2019) ¥9.18 billion ($83.6 million) / 6.88 million - Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer (2018) ¥7.65 billion ($70.5 million) / 5.48 million - Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet (2021)* ¥7.63 billion ($70.6 million) / 5.91 million - Zootopia (2016) ¥6.89 billion ($61.6 million) / 5.35 million - Detective Conan: Crimson Love Letter (2017) ¥6.33 billion ($58.0 million) / 5.00 million - Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare (2016) ¥6.13 billion ($55.4 million) / 4.15 million - Avengers: Endgame (2019) ¥5.98 billion ($76.3 million) / 4.71 million - Thermae Romae (2012) ¥5.73 billion ($51.7 million) / 4.30 million - Kingdom (2019) ¥5.73 billion ($46.6 million) / 4.46 million - Cinderella (2015) ¥5.55 billion ($56.8 million) / 4.50 million - Red Cliff - Part II (2009) ¥5.50 billion ($26.0 million) / ~5.45 million - Kagemusha (1980)
*Run impacted by theater closures in Tokyo, Osaka, and six other prefectures due to COVID-19.
Note: Kagemusha's admissions are estimated using the avg. ticket price of 1980. I would imagine its avg. ticket price would be above that average (probably skewed older), and its admissions closer to 5 million, but with no figure available, don't want to mess with it based on speculation.

Indeed. There were some 2010 releases that took advantage of when the exchange rate started to become really favorable (like Alice in Wonderland, Toy Story 3, Arriety), but it's a shame nothing released in 2011/2012 managed to reach ¥10 billion when the rate became REALLY favorable (only one film even got to ¥9 billion those years!).
But now the exchange rate is the worst it's been in 21/22 years, and seems likely to reach 1990s levels. USD totals are going to suck for years. This doesn't matter to local films, but it definitely hurts Hollywood. ¥5 billion is only $38 million, and ¥10 billion is only $76 million now... ¥10 billion was $120/$130 million 10 years ago (~$50 million MORE than now...), and $90/100 million over most of the last 4-5 years.
The JPY has declined 14% versus the USD in just two months... Recovering from a 20+ year low (maybe even 25+ year low since it keeps declining as the dollar skyrockets) is going to take forever (likely several years) to bounce back.

Golden Week began with a bang today! Friday's (Showa Day) numbers are exceptional. I'll post some estimates here later.
Important to remember that during the three major holiday periods of the year (New Year, Golden Week, and Obon Festival), that the individual weekdays can be about as strong / stronger than Saturday or Sunday themselves. And the weekdays as a set can be 2-3x greater than the weekend, and this year will certainly be on the high end of that range, or maybe greater, since all four of Golden Week's national holidays fall on weekdays (Friday this week, and Tuesday-Thursday next week).
