Flava'd X Fifty: 2000 + 21 (50-#1 + Albums!!)
The final list is just about locked in, so that means it is once again time for the annual counting down of the year's best tunes. Have I really done ten of these (five yearly)? Apparently yes. We are all old now and I bare some responsibility for it. Apologies for that, but I'll try to make up for it with some killer tracks here. Hopefully you like pop/punk and/or metalcore cause those were the two big sounds of the year and there's gonna be alot of it, as compared to the discopop/alternative takeover of the last few years (though there will still be plenty of that, along with the usual healthy mix of other genres.)
We still had to deal with lots of Rona, but at least concerts came back this year! No more zoom shows! That will also have a heavy influence on the upcoming list. So rejoice at the return of live music and the return of the Flava'd Fifty!

Re: Flava'd X Fifty: 2000 + 21
As always, we'll kick it off with A History of #1s, both from my five lists here and many more I used to post on other forums in the before times.
Songs:
2020: Dream Boy - Beach Bunny 2019: Cruel Summer - Taylor Swift 2018: Now or Never Now - Metric 2017: Need To Feel Your Love - Sheer Mag 2016: Forget Me Now - Against the Current 2015: Dead Inside - Muse 2014: Oh My Darling Don't Cry - Run the Jewels 2013: Unbelievers - Vampire Weekend 2012: Little Talks - Of Monsters and Men 2011: Get Away - Yuck 2010: Dance Yourself Clean - LCD Soundsystem 2009: Panic Switch - Silversun Pickups 2008: All Nightmare Long - Metallica 2007: Through the Fire and Flames - Dragonforce 2006: When You Were Young - The Killers 2005: Helena - My Chemical Romance 2004: Ch-Check It Out - Beastie Boys 2003: Faint - Linkin Park
Albums:
2020: Evermore - Taylor Swift 2019: Dedicated - Carly Rae Jepsen 2018: Art Of Doubt - Metric 2017: Need To Feel Your Love - Sheer Mag 2016: In Our Bones - Against The Current 2015: Chasing Yesterday - Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds 2014: 1989 - Taylor Swift 2013: Modern Vampires Of The City - Vampire Weekend 2012: Be The Void - Dr. Dog 2011: Something To Die For - The Sounds 2010: This Is Happening - LCD Soundsystem 2009: It's Blitz! - Yeah Yeah Yeahs 2008: Death Magnetic - Metallica 2007: Sound of Silver - LCD Soundsystem 2006: The Black Parade - My Chemical Romance 2005: Plans - Death Cab For Cutie 2004: To The 5 Boroughs - Beastie Boys 2003: Meteora - Linkin Park
Beach Bunny very nearly got the sweep last year, but Taylor snuck in right at the end and took best album for herself. Hey, one out of two ain't bad though. Also, these are all what I felt at the time, not necessarily now, though I think many of them would hold up.
Will start things up in a little bit, maybe like half-hourish.

This goes to show just how much difference a year makes. MGK in the top ten? Absurd, yet at the time it made sense. Now I hate him again. How dare he take shots at Slipknot???
The rest seems good. Lots of my favorites posting high quality tracks during the downtime.

Re: Flava'd X Fifty: 2000 + 21
I usually wait till the end for Close Calls, but let's switch it up this year.
Get Mine by Saving Escape - toughest song to leave off since they were So Good at Inkcarceration Festival. However, the live versions of their songs are legitimately alot better than the studio versions, mostly thanks to the inclusion of multiple saxophone solos per song. So I'm leaving it off and they can try again next year after releasing their new album.
Crawling Kingsnake by The Black Keys - the best song that was left off, I originally had it around 25ish, but its a cover and I was having a hard enough time finding room for all the originals from 2021. So bye bye Black Keys.
Planet Shit by Every Time I Die - KJers probably know the bassist from ETID better as The Butcher. This song is rad, but plenty of metalcore on the list already,
Cody by The Killers - all their new songs are good, but they work so much better together than apart.
Vintage by Blu Detiger- fun pop rock song.
One + One by Death From Above 1979 - continue their tradition of making a killer lead single
Bitter by Chunk, No Captain Chunk! - great name for a band
Excess by Petrubator - my favorite electro song of the year
Last Chance To Dance by A Day To Remember - new album was meh, but this song slaps faces ... of bad friends
Shivers by Ed Sheeran - I personally like No 6 Collabs alot, but for some reason most people didn't so Ed went back to his bread n butter mathematical symbols.
Charger by Elio - the remix with Charli is even better
High Horse by Wage War - tough song to leave off, but I like the Kacey version better
and finally
Easy On Me by Adele - I'm the one person who likes the new album more than 25.

"Usually I put something on tv, so we never think about you and me"
50. Heat Waves by Glass Animals
-I almost put this one on last year's list, but glad I didn't cause it feels right here. Heat Waves was one of dem natural hits that spent all of 2021 moving up the billboard charts one spot at a time until it finally hit the top ten. They even nabbed a Best New Artist grammy nomination (despite this being their third album.) So yeah, good year for Glass Animals and hopefully they use their newfound success to keep pumping out hits in the days to come.

"You're so see through, might as well be a window"
49. Nothing To Say by New Found Glory
-I would not have expected New Found Glory to make a yearly countdown in the year of 2021. Maybe a "Best of 2000s" list for My Friends Over You or Understatement, but for a new song? Well, this is one of the biggest benefactors of concerts returning. I probably wouldn't have even listened to their new album without it. And this particular show was extra special being a RiotFest late night afterparty. I had been on my feet all day for three days straight and they burned badly, but as soon as New Found Glory took the stage (around midnight) all those worries evaporated and they just killed it for 70 minutes straight. They were even aware that nobody listened to their new material and taught us how to sing this one. That turned out to be pretty easy. Anytime the singers take a pause, we in the audience shout "You Got Nothing To Say!"

48. Bite Me by Avril Lavigne
-Avril and Travis Barker hit the dolorean and travelled back to the early 2000s (they weren't alone) to recreate what worked so well in their early careers. And, let's be real here, it wasn't just the music that went back cause damn Avril looks good in this video. Even better than she used to really, now that her awkward "I'm not comfortable with being sexy" attitude has been replaced by a "Fuck You" attitude towards whatever idiot this song is about.

47. Kill The Ache by Currents
-I always check out every band on a Festival card before going, cause even though 9/10 of the people you haven't heard of will stink, the one good one is more than worth it. If I hadn't done that, I would not have priortized going to their set, and if I hadn't done that I would not have been given what i considered to be my first dose of normalcy since the start of the pandemic. They tore us to shreds for 30 straight minutes. Kill The Ache was the closer, and would probably be considered a slow song by their stanards, but I love the melody and think there's just enough power to fit it in amongst their best.

"I've waited a lifetime to live, it's time to ignite"
46. Making A Fire by Foo Fighters
-Foo Fighters basically made the transition to classic rock this year as they were formally inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame and then proceeded to play Get Back with Paul McCartney. Making A Fire is also definitely in the genre of "Foo Fighters Songs" , but there's a little extra too it, stuff they picked up while doing the Sonic Highways documentary where they travelled from town to town making songs about them. Goes to show that even if they are the most comfortable act on the planet, Dave Grohl is never gonna settle and is still evolving into the best version of himself. Also worth checking out is their short album full of Bee Gees covers.

45. t r a n s p a r e n t s o u l by Willow
-Another Travis Barker Kardashian song already! That dude was everywhere this year. Willow Smith, aka Jaden's sister, was previously best known for the song "I Whip My Hair Back And Forth." You may remember that as something that was fun for maybe twenty seconds before becoming quite annoying. That's all forgiven though. This is a new Willow who doesn't need Jaden's last name anymore. She just needs a broken heart and some fast chords.

44. New Shapes by Charli XCX with Christine, the Queens and Caroline Polachik
-There's no such thing as quiet year for XCX. If there's a pandemic and she can't tour, she makes an entire album by herself (last year's excellent how I'm feeling now.) This year she did tour, and still had time to release some high quality singles to promote her next album Crash, coming out in a few months. New Shapes helps explain why she's always so busy. Because New Things are always better. And even if they aren't, then they might be. Probably not a super healthy way to live, but I love the results she is giving us.

43. Take Me Away by Ayron Jones
-Ayron hit the scene hard this year as the next big guitar prodigy. And for his first few songs he lived up to the hype! I was not able to see him live but would like to in the future. This song is very aggresive and full of emotional trauma, but also works as an uplifting stadium rock anthem, the exact type of weird balance I look for in my musicians. As a bonus, this Ayron has not lied about his vaccine status.

42. Higher Power by Coldplay
-Rejoice! Coldplay returned to the very top of the billboard charts in 2021, their first time since 2008s Viva La Vida. And they did it all by themselves with absolutely no help from a certain Korean boy band and their rabid fanbase. Just kidding of course, but hey if you're gonna make a record with Max Martin then might as well go all out for that #1 hit. While I do find My Universe catchy, I prefer the lead single Higher Power which is a nice mix of the new uberpop sound and what we've known from them in the past.

41. Jail by Kanye West with Jay-Z
-While it's unfortunate that Jail has become an anthem for any celebrity who sees themselves a victim of cancel culture, this song still slaps pretty hard. It's the return of The Throne! It also shows the ambition that Kanye had for this album, which is admirable even if some decisions were questionable. Luckily Jail Part 1 has no censored words, no DaBaby and no regrets.

Make Coldplay sad again instead of 80s dance tracks or songs about paradise
Foo Fighters are up there for the most overrated band in history. A few decent tracks like Everlong and Times Like These but fellow safe dad rock band Nickelback have a few decent tracks also.
I think Bite Me is ok but I'll always have a thing for Avril
“Gods are great ... but the heart is greater. For it is from our hearts they come, and to our hearts they shall return.” “We were like gods at the dawning of the world, & our joy was so bright we could see nothing else but the other.” “There are three things all wise men fear: the sea in storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man.” “You have to pretend you get an endgame. You have to carry on like you will; otherwise, you can't carry on at all.” "Paper is dead without words / Ink idle without a poem / All the world dead without stories."

40. Karma by Mod Sun
-A pop-punk breakup anthem, featuring a dude with really dumb hair, directed by a dude with even dumber hair. Have I learned nothing? Well, much like the entire genre, apparently not. We just keep going back to things that we know we may regret later. Why they do have to be so damn catchy then? What goes around, comes around, and maybe we'll all get what we deserve ... cause Karma's a bitch I heard.

39. In Another Life by Crown The Empire with Courtney LaPlante
-Crown The Empire have been around for awhile, but I'd never heard of them until the summer music festivals began. A great find! They switched singers recently, so it was a good time to jump on while still having their impressive backlog (the new guy killed it on The Fallout at Ink.) As an extra double bonus, this also features the year's breakout vocalist Courtney LaPlante of Spiritbox (this won't be the last time you see her on the countdown either.)
