The Matrix Resurrections Predictions
The trailer was really good, and I'm not even a Matrix fan. HBO Max will hurt, but I feel like this can probably do 50-60m regardless. Would think 100m was possible without it.

Re: The Matrix Resurrections Predictions
Yes this should do well but if it's opening in December then the opening will be further muted along with HBO MAX hurting it's potential.

A strong trailer. Great choice of song.
I think audiences are willing to give it a chance. But marketing should show us something we have never seen before. Different virtual realities allow you to do pretty much anything.

Re: The Matrix Resurrections Predictions
Good trailer, although some scenes kinda look cheap? Idk I think it's the coloring.
If this didn't have HBO Max and opened at another time I'd be saying $70m+ OW. Hype is there. During Christmas and with streaming I'm expecting a 40-45m opening. February 2022 has no huge blockbuster, it'd be a great release date for this but WB will be WB.

Re: The Matrix Resurrections Predictions
HBO Max limits potential for this. I think around 50m OW is likely given the release date plus hybrid release.

Re: The Matrix Resurrections Predictions
I don’t know. I’m a big fan of the Matrix (I even enjoyed both sequels), big fan of the Wachowskis, but found myself wondering—Why does this exist? What’s even the premise? Feels like a literal reboot / rehash. Trailer wasn’t clear on any of the “whys,” then barraged the viewer with Matrixy action imagery for 2 more minutes.
Not saying this doesn’t have potential to do really well, but right now I’m skeptical.

Dam. I actually was getting excited for this and then that trailer happened. This is definitely giving more of an ID42 vibe now.

Re: The Matrix Resurrections Predictions
ID42R numbers would actually be decent all things considered. I like the trailer and think it will go over $150M though. Maybe even over the first Matrix at $190M (right?), but nowhere near Reloaded or whatever this year’s top Marvel film is.

Re: The Matrix Resurrections Predictions
Difference between ID42 and this is that ID42 went ahead without Will Smith which was stupid. Here Keanu is back and that makes a big difference. Without stupid hybrid release, this would have at least had a big OW.

Re: The Matrix Resurrections Predictions
This would do anywhere between 75m to 100m opening weekend IF not for the stupid day & date release on HBO Max. Dumb!
my prediction is 40m OW & 100m domestic.

Re: The Matrix Resurrections Predictions
This is going to an epic hit for sure. Not what it could have been without HBO Max and more space from Spider-man, but this is going to make a lot of money.
And it will have THE BATMAN final trailer

Batman Begins/TDK arc?
Matrix Resurrections: Good but not great gross (partly due to HBO Max), good reviews
Matrix Rebooted (sequel): Agent Smith and Fishburne version of Morpheus in it (maybe Cypher?). Massive spots in the trailers. Higher grossing than Resurrections.

Re: The Matrix Resurrections Predictions
I was trying to figure out what was off about the trailer and it's absolutely the colouring. The iconic green hue of the Matrix scenes in the original trilogy is gone. I'm sure they'll make a reference in the film to the Matrix having been rebooted to be even more realistic or something, but from an audience perspective it does noticeably look different and doesn't 'feel' like the Matrix. Also kind of insane that some of this CGI looks worse than in the original films, probably because it's more over the top.
It sadly does not look nearly as fresh as the first films because by now we've been through every conceivable over the top action scene in endless movies that were inspired by the Matrix. I would've liked to see more of the post-apocalyptic 'real world' because that sets it apart from other films.
I do think this will do well, probably the most valuable property they could put on HBO Max, I can imagine a lot of people will subscribe only to watch this out of curiosity. Box office should also be as strong as COVID allows, would not be surprised at $50M+ opening.
The Wachowskis lost their mojo a long time ago so the film will probably be a mess and panned by critics. I do hope it's a stand-alone and ends with a mass unplugging scene that Matrix fans always dreamed about because I kind of doubt they will do another.

Is it just me or does this seem forgotten? No second trailer yet, and only opening 5 days after Spider-Man. Seems like a stay home and watch on HBO film to me,

The holiday film slate feels so small that feel this will benefit a lot from sellouts from Spidy and the #2 film over the holidays. Still think its going to be huge.

I am sure Sing 2 will do way better than Matrix. Even early shows last saturday were very strong for Sing 2. Plus its not having hybrid release crap. At this point Matrix is screwed. it will be buried under the hype of Spidey. Plus stupid to release such a big budget movie on HBO Max.

Re: The Matrix Resurrections Predictions
Yeah this was a stupid move. January or Februrary would've benefited this so much along with no streaming.
5-day with Christmas Day probably won't go over 60m? Or maybe just above if hype is there but yeesh.

They probably would've pushed to 2022 if they hadn't known it was a stinker.

Re: The Matrix Resurrections Predictions
Strong reactions from every group of people I've seen the trailer with. All four quadrants. Lots of built up nostalgia for this one. I see the opening weekend and domestic totals matching Venom 2 ($90m/$215m). Not sure we'll see a leggy December/January run.

Re: The Matrix Resurrections Predictions
It can't have a $90m opening weekend with Christmas Eve on Friday and Christmas Day on Saturday - the worst possible Xmas calendar for movie theaters...

Re: The Matrix Resurrections Predictions
Yeah outside of SW none other franchise has yet to break past $80m OW over Christmas weekend. Spidey will do it but I'm not sure Matrix would have done $90m even without these restrictions.

Re: The Matrix Resurrections Predictions
Even with all of the things against the film such as dual release, its first sequel in 2003 had the biggest 4 day opening of all time and second biggest OW ever behind only Spiderman.
Yes the sequels were not well received overall but to have an OW of that magnitude from a predecessor that did an under $30M OW but leggy run shows how iconic the original Matrix was.
I think of it similar to Batman in a way. Batman 1 was massive game changing film. Batman and Robin almost destroyed the franchise. Took 8 years for a reboot but Batman Begins still had a muted run. The sequel rose to the previous peak in 2008, 18 years after the original.
The rise of the John Wick franchise will likely help too since KR stayed relevant.
