Re: Dune Predictions
I think the second trailer (about 3.5 minutes long released in July 2021) did a good job in previewing Paul Atreides as someone who is destined to be a leader with his mother promising his father that she will protect Paul. It's important for the trailer to persuade casual fans to see the movie. I believe Godzilla and Kong appeals more to casual movie fans than Paul Atreides and giant worms. So Dune could open with a $30 million, less than Godzilla versus Kong's first Friday to first Sunday's take of $31.6 million.

Re: Dune Predictions
this was going to bomb pre-COVID and will bomb even more now given that we are probably going to be entering a real bad state of cases come October and likely will have restrictions again.
sub-50m total.

Re: Dune Predictions
Today I learned:
--There is a 4th Hotel Transylvania coming out
--Almost no one from the earlier movies is involved
--Selena Gomez the singer is a Producer. She is a Producer on this 3rd sequel.

This is officially called "Dune: Part One" so a sequel will most likely happen.

Re: Dune Predictions
I actually think the new streaming ecosystem will ensure that Part 2 happens. Even if Part 1 flops, it will be a film with a diehard core following that will make a lot of noise online about Part 2 getting made. If AT&T/WarnerMedia passes, another studio will make it because they know it will drive a certain audience to their streaming platform. Netflix, Amazon, Apple TV etc have cash to burn and are desperate for content to drive subscribers. I find it hard to believe they wouldn't take a loss on it just for all the publicity it would give their service plus it would ensure a number of new subscribers because the diehard Dune/Villeneuve fans will sign up. I mean that's pretty much the only reason I would ever consider signing up for Apple TV but I would definitely do it. Think of it this way: AT&T burned serious money on Justice League Director's Cut just for the publicity and new subscribers. If they don't do it one of the more desperate streamers will do it instead.
If this were pre-COVID then yeah, if it failed to make $450M or whatever it would be a Golden Compass situation.

I had no idea this was already out in Europe and a bunch of Latin American countries but apparently it's doing OK.

Re: Dune Predictions
I already saw it 3 days back and a lot of nearby Asian countries are screening it now, so I'm guessing it's out in a good amount of Asian markets as well. It's doing fine and reviews are decent.

Re: Dune Predictions
Good overseas numbers and a couple oscar nominations would go a long way. Though it does seem like WB is preparing to finish the book regardless.

Re: Dune Predictions
Dune has grossed $76.5M so far overseas. It's doing strong business so far, will be interesting how it does in China. I'm beginning to think US opening could be ok but idk about $100m+ total. I'm thinking 30/75 or something.

Without HBO Max I would say it was poised for a high 30s OW and total anywhere between $110-$130M. With HBO Max, Golden Compass numbers. It's 2hrs 30min long so it may be an at-home curiosity watch for the general audience, and I don't think the fanbase is big enough to push it higher than that. That said, this is the first truly epic film coming out after theatres are somewhat back to normal, so there may be an appetite for that. The marketing is also emphasizing the Dances with Wolves/Avatar style plot that has proven to be a selling point for other films.

Dune will be fine, it should be good for 300-400m WW and with HBO Max viewers. the sequel should get greenlit

Re: Dune Predictions
Dune's PS is off like a rocket. Its faster than all movies this year barring BW. AT&T is retarded to release this for free on HBO. But for that it would have potential to open HUGE. Even otherwise this should have higher OW than Godzilla vs Kong earlier this year. I would say 60m OW and then have meh legs due to hybrid release.
