Here is its home video revenue breakdown, too, which is obviously the highest ever for a home video release after one week, and I also believe it's high enough to rank as the second highest ever in revenue on the lifetime sales chart behind Spirited Away.

Total: 1,310,783 = ¥7,326,885,500 ($66.4 million)

Kimetsu's DVD+BD fist week tops Spirited Away's DVD-only first week, but including the 1.1m estimate for VHS (assuming the VHS also moved 69% of its 2002 yearly total in the first week, as DVD did) the opening week looks something like:
DVD RE ¥4700: 1,406,312 = ¥6,609,666,400
DVD LE ¥15000: 4,635 = ¥69,525,000
VHS ¥4500: ~1,100,000 = ¥4,950,000,000
Total: 2,510,947 = ¥11,629,191,400

It definitely tops Frozen's first week by over a billion yen though:
BD RE ¥4000: 1,514,256 = ¥6,057,024,000
BD 3D ¥6000: 39,249 = ¥235,494,000
Total: 2,510,947 = ¥6,292,518,000

I wonder what the rental figures are for Demon Slayer, any idea?

Not sure if rental data gets released anywhere. I know for physical media rentals were huge (I can only imagine what the big family films did there) but the physical rental market has of course contracted hard and digital rental is something I know nothing about.

As for wondering if any film can reach a million lifetime again (let alone first week), I suppose the only even remotely plausible option is the final Evangelion film, and that's probably a long shot.

If we look at 2.0, that sold 842k and the final film wouldn't need a crazy increase to reach one million, but it'd still need a significant boost. And if we look at 3.0, that sold 583k, and you'd need to almost double that. Whether final takes after the second or third film is the big question.

(1.0 also sold 583k, but that includes the BD re-release a year later. It was 366k initially.)

I would expect 3.0+1.0 to perform closer to 2.0 than 3.0 on home video. Of course, 2.0 was huge, and I believe more or less maxed out its potential, so matching that is probably not realistic, especially in 2021/2022.

The film has proved to be very popular among the fanbase, and its box-office speaks for itself, outgrossing more than 3.0 and 2.0 combined(!) now. So we can probably presume the vast majority of its large fanbase will buy it on home video, whereas 3.0's mixed reception likely resulted in it slipping a good deal.

The Fable II finally releases after two delays, debuting atop the box office selling 168,000 admissions over the weekend frame on 349 screens, and sold 215,923 admissions since Friday. This is a 24% decline from its predecessor, but still a respectable hold considering some capacity restrictions that were still in place over the weekend in various prefectures. Expect a finish around ¥1.5 billion (~$15 million).

Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway becomes the first Gundam film in 33-years(!) to exceed the ¥1 billion milestone. I made a mistake last week in saying that the new film was going to become the highest grossing film in the long-running series, and as a poster pointed out, that isn't true as 1982's Mobile Suit Gundam III: Encounters in Space grossed ¥2.3 billion. Hathaway is unlikely to reach that milestone, but being the second biggest film after 40+ years is clearly nothing to be ashamed of.

Rurouni Kenshin: The Final Chapter two-part finale films continue to do very well. The Beginning is beginning (heh) to display stronger holds as fans who are still going out to see The Final are gradually making their way to see it. And The Final continues to have strong holds as well, and will exceed the ¥4 billion milestone soon. Despite the delays (they were suppose to released last July and August), and opening during a SOE in Tokyo/Osaka (among others), the films are doing very, very well. Depending on where The Beginning ends up, as projecting it right now is difficult as fans continue to make their way over after seeing The Final, the two-part finale is looking at a gross of ¥7/8 billion.

A Quiet Place 2 misses the Top 5, and comes in 28% below its predecessor, but again, given some capacity restrictions, this is satisfactory enough. Its 2-day is estimated, but its 3-day total above is accurate, and it sold 72,657 admissions over its first three-days in release on 444 screens. The first film was a mini-breakout of sorts when it opened, so a sequel doing almost 3/4ths of that business is pretty good when they're usually expected to be worse and can often lose some of the original's audience. Expect a finish around ¥500 million ($4/5 million).

Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet held noticeably better than estimated, and cleared the ¥7 billion milestone right before going into its tenth weekend. And after ten weeks, it has now exceeded 5 million admissions with 5,044,958. I don't think Toho is planning any sort of special events for it, judging by its gradual seating/screening cuts, so it'll probably play its way out normally over the next several weeks. Depending on how deep into Summer it gets while still on enough screens/seats, it might be able to reach ¥7.5 billion.

Hinomaru Soul and Mortal Kombat are estimated currently for their opening weekends, but over their first three-days in release, they sold 52,741 admissions and 32,737 admissions, respectively, on 334 and 429 screens.

And lastly, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train is no longer being tracked, having entered limited release now on just 36 screens as it's on home video. It'll add a tiny, tiny bit from them until they stop showing it, but its total won't go up much beyond its last reported total of ¥40,127,186,250 ($383.5 million) and 29,040,541 admission. So its run is practically over! It'll probably finish at ¥40.15 billion and 29.05/29.06 million admissions when Toho/Aniplex release its final total.

Don't forget the latest Demon Slayer events throughout the month of July with stage giveaways and greetings. It could add a little more.

True, but those will only add around 2,500 admissions total, assuming each of the 5 showings are in a ~500 seat auditorium. So depending on how much the entry (chosen by lottery) fee is to them, they shouldn't add more than ¥5-10 million more total.

Its run is basically over now with tracking over. No reason to try and calculate such a miniscule amount, likely no more than a couple hundred admissions a day (if that), from its remaining 36 theaters (all of which have it playing once a day on a small screen) and the little amount the stage greetings will add next month. Like I said, it's not "over", but we're talking a current total of ¥40.127 billion possibly reaching around ¥40.15/40.16 billion or something.

To my knowledge, they're being given out to the attendees that get selected for the stage greeting shows via lottery.

And it seems that these giveaways will be given on the special showings on July22-29 rather than

I don't have any data on this, but so much of the world has moved onto streaming and digital, that I'd be pretty surprised if any home video release moves over 1 million copies in a week anymore, anywhere. I'm guessing only big fanbase releases in the U.S. like the Star Wars movies, or perhaps major family films like Frozen II would be on the list.

Blu Ray alone Endgame had 2.5M sales in first week in USA iirc.

Corpse:
From the official statement, I can't see this giveaway is determined by lottery.
And it seems that these giveaways will be given on the special showings on July 22-29 rather than
the stage events.

Indeed. We'll need to see how widescale this ends up being, but I'd go into it with low (or reserved) expectations, especially with little/no knowledge of then yet.

1,310,783 copies in the first week could be the highest in many years on a worldwide scale for a physical home video release, too.

Yeah, figured it'd be something with a huge fanbase in the U.S., or a major family release, that could be better. This was also before Disney+ though, so I wonder how sales of movies will be going forward when they're available to stream. How did Raya's home video sales compare to Moana's, for example.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Top 100 Grossing Films
Since the previous update:

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train entered limited release and is no longer being tracked, so its total below should be very close to its reported final total in the coming months. It does have some events in July that could add a bit more to its total, so I'll provide an update when the time comes.

Evangelion: 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time jumps a whopping 15 spots late in its run thanks to its farewell event that began last week, and entered the Top 50! It has grossed more than its two predecessors combined. I won't rule out it reaching ¥10 billion now that its got within range where just playing out of theaters normally will get it very close, and the distributors have reason to want to celebrate it reaching such a milestone.

Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet jumps 22 spots and enters the Top 100, knocking the first Narnia movie out of the Top 100. It'll crack the Top 90, and should finish in the mid-80s. And since it's exceeded ¥7 billion, only three films in the Top 100 are below this mark now.

Since the previous update:

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train entered limited release and is no longer being tracked, so its total below should be very close to its reported final total in the coming months. It does have some events in July that could add a bit more to its total, so I'll provide an update when the time comes.

Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time jumps 15 spots here, too, cracking the Top 80 thanks to its farewell event providing it a significant boost late in its run. It'll probably finish around 6.5 million admissions, so a spot in the mid-60s should be expected. Very impressive.

Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet exceeded 5 million admissions to make the list! It'll be an uphill challenge, but it'll be aiming to crack the Top 100. I doubt it will, but any sort of small bump or string of strong holds can get it there.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Top Grossing Animated Films
Since the last update (back in April):

Demon Slayer:Mugen Train entered limited release and is no longer being tracked, so its total below should be very close to its reported final total in the coming months. It does have some events in July that could add a bit more to its total, so I'll provide an update when the time comes.

Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time jumps many spots to enter the Top 20 and will reach #14 in a few days. I doubt it goes any higher up the rankings, but as mentioned in the above lists, it could still reach ¥10 billion if the distributors want to reach the milestone (and it's a big one, so seems like they would since it'll get fairly close on its own).

Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet joins the list! (It had just opened the last time I updated the list.) It'll climb at least one more spot to #26, but reaching the Top 25 will be a challenge. It's doable with any future bump or string of great holds, but it's definitely high mark to achieve.

Was wondering did Demon Slayer end up topping Tokyo Olympiad on that admissions as percentage of the population chart?

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Admissions/Population Comparison
Indeed, and pretty convincingly in the end. It surpassed Tokyo Olympiad back in January, but here is the updated and preliminary final (until its official total is announced in the coming month(s)).

Besides breaking all sorts of records (hundreds), including shattering the all-time revenue and admission records, this chart here makes it evident on just how big it really was, and not just the latest film to break some records. Not saying every other film wasn't impressive, but I think Demon Slayer takes the title of most impressive overall performance ever pretty convincingly.

All-Time Most Attended Films/Population Comparison (10 Million Admissions+):

% of Pop, (Film's Admissions/Japan's Population) - Film (Year)
23.10% (29.04 million/125.72 million) - Demon Slayer: Mugen Train (2020)
19.72% (19.50 million/x98.88 million) - Tokyo Olympiad (1965)
18.48% (23.50 million/127.13 million) - Spirited Away (2001)
15.76% (20.03 million/127.08 million) - Frozen (2014)
15.24% (19.30 million/126.59 million) - Your Name. (2016)
14.30% (13.00 million/x90.73 million) - Emperor Meiji and the Great Russo-Japanese War (1958)
13.35% (16.83 million/126.06 million) - Titanic (1997)
13.10% (12.55 million/x95.83 million) - Godzilla vs. King Kong (1962)
12.74% (16.20 million/127.13 million) - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)
12.14% (15.50 million/127.68 million) - Howl's Moving Castle (2004)
11.26% (14.20 million/126.06 million) - Princess Mononoke (1997)
10.99% (14.00 million/127.39 million) - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)
10.08% (12.87 million/127.68 million) - Ponyo (2008)
9.869% (12.60 million/127.67 million) - Bayside Shakedown: Save the Rainbow Bridge! (2003)
9.477% (12.10 million/127.67 million) - The Last Samurai (2003)
9.022% (10.69 million/118.48 million) - E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
8.615% (11.00 million/127.68 million) - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)
8.364% (10.61 million/126.26 million) - Weathering With You (2019)
8.237% (10.45 million/126.26 million) - Frozen II (2019)
8.051% (10.31 million/127.55 million) - Avatar (2009)

Note: Populations are yearly averages from the UN; estimates can slightly vary.

That's one record that might be beaten again eventually even with the declining population.

With population decline getting those many admissions would become way more difficult.

It'll be interesting to watch. Overall, I think it will mostly balances itself out, with perhaps a slight disadvantage towards it being beatable in the future since the population isn't just declining, it's aging rapidly. 50%+ of the population will be over 50 this year or the next. Films will need to have very strong older/senior appeal in order to reach high/very high numbers fairly soon (it's sort of needed now even, and Demon Slayer was able to benefit a lot from this group, evident from its weekdays).

The market is going to become very weak for younger-skewing/family films in particular, and I believe we've already begun to see this happen in recent years as many of them haven't been pulling the numbers of their predecessors or previous studio installments.

Getting that % might still happen I believe but DS made this mark by selling a lot of admissions. At the end of the day the chart talks about % so I guess it will be beatable. I feel Avatar 2 might have a great chance if the movie delivers. Regardless its not easy to get into this list.

1,310,783 copies in the first week could be the highest in many years on a worldwide scale for a physical home video release, too.

Yeah, figured it'd be something with a huge fanbase in the U.S., or a major family release, that could be better. This was also before Disney+ though, so I wonder how sales of movies will be going forward when they're available to stream. How did Raya's home video sales compare to Moana's, for example.

I think Disney won't be doing physical releases anymore. Just D+.

I believe they still are, at least for this year, as I saw a 4K/Blu-ray release for Cruella scheduled for September 21st. Of course, physical releases will eventually be phased out, and Disney will almost certainly be one of the first to do so with how big Disney+ is, but hopefully it's not a sudden decision.

Assuming physical sales will/have tanked (and will be phased out soon) now with Disney+ and all the other streaming platforms, such as HBO Max, then perhaps Demon Slayer's first week on DVD/Blu-ray in Japan (1,310,783) will indeed be the highest ever worldwide for a physical release from this point moving forward. That'd be an interesting, and rather unexpected feat to achieve, and one that would likely hold forever.
