The only thing Japanese fans possibly want now is Season 2 coming soon

So on Friday, I'm estimating that it earned about ¥4-4.5 million ($36,000-$41,000) on 3,000-3,500 admissions. This is using an unknown average ticket price of around ¥1,300 (shouldn't be much lower, and probably not much higher). My estimate is based on ticket sold from 47 theaters (where it sold 2,371 tickets) from its theater count of 63 (this is down from its earlier count of 82 due to the SOEs).

I'm going to assume it's going to skew a bit younger, so it could see a fair uptick over the weekend. However, I don't see how it's possible to sell up to 60,000 over its first three-days. If it sees a nice uptick over the weekend, I'd predict a three-day total of perhaps 15,000 admissions or so.

So it was a totall bullshit. I always suspected that but they looked sincere enough.

There's always a slight possibility that the unaccounted for theaters (16 locations or 25% in this case) did really, really well, but even then, I don't think it did more than 4,000/4,500 admissions for Friday. If that did happen though, its 3-day admissions could reach around 20,000 if it receives a decent weekend bump. And note that this, and the estimated I mentioned above, are both pretty decent for a Russian film (even if it's a Japanese co-production) in limited release (63 theaters). I estimate that it opened in 10th place on Friday, and it could make the Top 10 again this weekend.

But yeah, 60,000 is not happening this weekend, so unless a huge percentage of ticket holders are waiting until after the opening weekend, that figure was likely made up in an attempt to perhaps generate artificial interest.

Sorry but I was reading a post hear about the average percentage share the cinemas, distributors and production committee usually get for an anime? film. Does anyone know it

Corpse do you think the fan events for Conan will resume after the SOEs? And if so how much can the film reach including those? Also do you think if the SOEs weren't put in place, the film would have crossed the 2019 film?

Congratulations RK. A very nice run with restrictions. Conan is still doing really well and I think it will come near the franchise average or peak once SOEs are lifted.

Thank you Corpse for heads up on DS' weekend. 33 weeks is a great run and it's time that it leaves Top 10. 40B+ total and 29m admissions is a huge feat, the next target is home media sales and whether it can set any records in that area.

This is basically an unknown at the moment. I feel confident that Toho will probably do something for it once the SOEs are lifted, but it will be 2 months (minimum) after debuting The franchise has a lot of fans, but it's hard to say how many could turn up for any event(s) given the fairly long delay in holding them. Or they may do nothing. ¥7 billion+ is still a lot, so they could decide that focusing on their upcoming summer schedule is a better option.

It very likely would have beaten its predecessor though without the SOEs as it opened higher and was outpacing it for the first two weeks and shortly into the SOEs. And it's still going to end up as the third biggest film in the franchise even with such a big handicap working against it. So because of this, I don't think the film franchise has quite peaked yet, and expect future films, especially next year's film (the 25th anniversary release), still have some room to grow further.

It's broken down as such, and to my knowledge, applies for every film in the market (not just anime releases):

First, theaters receive 50% of a film's earnings.
Second, distributors then receive 20% of the take after the theater share.
Third, production companies receive (or split if multiple) the remaining amount.

So, if a film grossed ¥10 billion:

Theaters = ¥5 billion.
Distributor(s) = ¥1 billion (20% of the remaining ¥5 billion).
Production Companies = ¥4 billion (the leftover amount).

So theaters get 50%, and the other 50% share goes to the distributor and production companies, with the distributor receiving the 20% share of that remaining 50% first before the leftover amount goes to the production companies.

Can we say that when Demon Slayer will have exceeded 29 million admissions, it will have achieved all possible goals (even if it's not really a goal) ? Because even if they are not targets either, the 29.5M or 30M admissions are unachievable and the¥ 40.5Bn or $385M is unlikely to be exceeded. In less than 7 days, Demon Slayer will therefore exceed all possible objectives.

Shouldn't DETECTIVE CONAN 24 be above the WW $100m mark by now?

Currently, there is no promotion campaign for the movie in theaters yet.

However, they have displayed posters in some train stations to promote for the DVD/ Blu-ray release. Additionally, KNY will have two large commercial collaboration with Suntory (soft drinks https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rI_0JUWZhY) and Bourbon (cookies/snacks https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ez7SY3qigSc). These collaborations seem larger than previous ones in 2020 from other companies (Lawson, Uniqlo, convey belt sushi chains, takoyaki chains, coffee cans,...). Hence, I wonder if Bourbon and Suntory try to boost their sales during the DVD/ Blu-ray release or they try to catch the wave of Season 2 (if the companies know in advance when the season airs).

I'd say so, yes. The final countdown is basically here now that it's out of the Top 10 at the box-office, and the home video release promotion is kicking into high gear as MSFK mentioned a bit above this post.

The home video launch week could see sales above the movie's opening weekend, in terms of revenue.

Indeed, as well as large departments stores that were subject of the SOEs as well. Malls and such being closed could have negatively impacted Demon Slayer's home video launch, for example. Now we'll see just how many copies it can move in its first week without the "what if malls were open in Tokyo/Osaka?" question always coming up.

Just want to mention that they're operating under 50% capacity restrictions and early closings (8/9pm), similar to the pre-SOE regulations and last fall's capacity limits. Still, great news, and this will allow part two of the Rurouni Kenshin finale this weekend to open properly without too much of a handicap.

This past weekend's actuals and various chart updates will be posted over the next couple of hours.

I'm going to be scaling down my activity here starting this month, likely only posting the weekend actuals and chart updates on Mondays/Tuesdays, perhaps a brief weekend outlook (still staying away from forecasts until the market is a bit more stable), and to answer questions here and there when I occasionally pop in during the week.

But come July, I'm going to be taking more of an actual break for awhile.

After six weeks in release, Rurouni Kenshin: The Final Chapter - The Final claims the #1 spot at the weekend box-office after falling short over its first five weekends. This is Warner Bros. first film to rank #1 at the weekend box office since Tenet back in September. Part one of the finale has continued to have absolutely incredible holds on the weekdays and weekends alike now, and has outgrossed the original film in the 5-film saga. Its 38-day admissions have reached an impressive 2,260,298, and it should easily clear 2.5 million admissions. Rurouni Kenshin: The Final Chapter - The Beginning, part two of the finale, opens this upcoming weekend.

Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet finally had a weekend hold that it's been really needing for a few weeks now, and with theaters in Tokyo and Osaka (among others) reopened beginning this week, let's see if it can recoup some of its lost earrings in the major prefectures over the upcoming weekends. After six-weeks of release, it has sold 4,703,967 admissions.

Cruella is a huge bomb as expected from multiple theater chains boycotting Disney releases, most notably Toho Cinemas (the busiest chain in the country). It was given a four-day release, presumably due to its annoying same-day Disney+ release, and only sold 63,948 admissions after its first four-days in release. Look for a finish around ¥300 million (~$3 million). Disney obviously isn't hurting for money, but at this point, I wonder if they're actually making a profit from theatrical earnings in Japan right now.

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train finally falls outside the Top 10 in its 33rd week of release (second highest ever), and just barely at that. After 33 weeks in release, its admissions are now up to 28,994,796. I'll continue to track its weekend grosses for as long as they're available, but I'd only expect one, maybe two more at the most. The biggest film of all-time's run is quickly approaching its conclusion now, so look for a projected final gross in the coming weeks.

Demon Slayer Sparks Insane Turnout at Local Blood Drives

Excerpt from the article:
Spoiler: show
LiveDoor News says in April, the Red Cross hit 77% of its target for Tokushima. This rate is comparable to its pre-pandemic standard of 80% turnout. However, things shot up after the Demon Slayer contest began in May. There were 1,701 donors this past month compared to the 464 in April. So if you thought Tanjiro had little power in the real world, you can think again!

But come July, I'm going to be taking more of an actual break for awhile.

Are KJ treasures even allowed to take time off?

I understand and am sure you have good reasons but your contributions will be sorely missed.

Corpse needs his much deserved break after rigorous tracking these past few months. I'm sure he will be back in few weeks or a month.

I'm not going to go away permanently, and probably not long-term either. A month, maybe two, beginning in July is what I'm expecting.

Truth is, I am a bit burned out and don't want that feeling to fester. And we're going on vacation sometime in July or August, so taking a break in July is good timing there as well.

Nice. You really needed break! There were times when I wanted to throw that pillow image (from DS) because I know you have been staying up late nights in answering all the questions posted here for DS and those insane amount of data-filled charts which for sure take a lot of work.

Yes, take a break, I need one as well because of Finals exam week here.
It's not good to get burn out (speaking in experience as an artist, as well as a gacha player lmao).
So get breaks often my dude. Take care.
