Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (05/22-23); Charts Update
Cynosure wrote: You would think that with the Olympics on their shoulders the Japanese would have gone with a vaccination plan at least as fast-paced as Europe's (which is still slower than the US, Canada, the UK or Israel), but they've been very slow on that front. It frankly doesn't make any sense.
According to Bloomberg, Japan has the lowest population coverage in terms of vaccination of all top 20 economies. It's almost certainly due to the long slog it takes to get things approved in the market. They probably could have found ways to work with regulations and the approval measures to quicken the vaccination process, but they're pretty stubborn, and even then, given the low cases/deaths in Japan, comparatively to many countries, there likely wasn't an immediate rush to speed up the process. And they were certainly wanting to manufacture their own vaccine(s) as well. Of course, this wasn't the right decision as it's coming back to bite them now as cases, while not high still compared to other countries, are remaining consistently high for them over a longer period of time right now, which is causing some strain on the hospitals in some prefectures. Not to mention the whole issue with the Olympics coming up. Not related to the Covid vaccines, but I just read an article about how the Shooting sports are hitting a lot of snags currently due to Japan's incredibly strict gun laws. (Of course, Japan has almost eliminated gun deaths and violence as a result, deaths are in the single digits a year now, so can't fault them there given the success I suppose.) A lot of limitations are being place on the shooting events, such as restricting certain ammunition and the amount of ammunition, coaches are needing Japanese assistants with permission to hold a gun since they're not allowed to hold any guns (let alone fire them). This obviously should have been something to consider well before just 2 months ahead of the actual events, but is just another example of little willingness to bend existing regulations and such.

Will Japan use Kimetsu's characters as mascots during the Olympic to promote their culture? Japanese airlines have painted Pokemon on their planes for years, so that franchise is quite popular in the West.

They'll probably be included in some way.

Also, this week, and for any future updates, I'm going to start estimating the dailies to be a little more precise to avoid as many adjustments as necessary since it's pretty time consuming to go back and rework the estimates.

And its average ticket price, after actually increasing for a couple weeks (very unusual pattern), went back down by a noticeable amount last week. The rural prefectures also came in much lower than expected over the weekend frame. *Shrug* So, take its estimates as estimates indeed until it stabilizes at some point since it's been pretty up and down.

are weekday and weekend shares suppose to be almost equal? This varies greatly among films, depending on the demographics they're attracting. But a general rule is that the closer the share is to being 50/50, the more diverse its audience is. And Demon Slayer is almost exactly 50/50, evidence it has indeed attracted a significant share from every demographic. From young children to senior citizens, teens to adults, and all groups of people of various makeup that fall into them. There isn't a demo or people the film (and series overall) hasn't brought in, which is appropriate for the biggest film ever.

That's so interesting! I keep learning so many new things. And to think I was just curious on how Demon Slayer will do in Japan and now I'm interested in the whole of box office in general Quote: And Demon Slayer is almost exactly 50/50, evidence it has indeed attracted a significant share from every demographic. Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (05/22-23); Charts Update
If you, or anyone else, are very interested, here's a general breakdown ("general" being the key word here):
To start, I'd breakdown Japan's population into 6 district key age groups, each able to be marketed towards and can either support a film by itself or impact how a film performs:
0-14 (~15.0 million): Very young skewing; children. 15-29 (~18.0 million): Younger skewing; teens, students, young-adults. 30-49 (~31.5 million): Adult-skewing; college and younger-aged workers. 50-69 (~32.0 million): Older skewing; average-aged workers. 70-84 (~22.0 million): Very old skewing; older-aged workers, senior citizens. 85+ (~7.0 million): Approaching retirement, retirees.
And of course, the more a film is able to attract from multiple age-groups, especially the fastest growing (by default of population loss) 50+ groups (which now make up 49% of the population), the higher its box-office prospects end up becoming. 85+ keeps growing and can be included by itself now, I believe.
So from there, here is how a typical film (always some exceptions) performs over the various weekday or weekends IF it is primarily skewing towards one of these groups:
In-Season Months (Mar., Apr., July, Aug., Nov., Dec.): [During Holidays/Holiday Periods] 0-14: Very strong weekdays, often accounting for ~65-70% (sometimes higher) of their weekly earnings. 15-29: Stronger weekdays that can accounting for ~50-60% of their weekly earnings. 30-49: The most balanced age-group for these months, with a slight skew towards better weekdays. 50-69: Weaker weekdays, often coming in below 50% of their weekly earnings. 70-84: Very weak weekdays, typically accounting for around ~35-40% of their weekly earnings. 85+: Minimal differences here since most people in this age-group are nearing retirement, or already retired, so are sort of already on holiday if you will. Slight skew towards weekdays.
Note: November is included in the "In-Season" months, but it's by far the weakest of them and usually only applies to a film when they're released in the last week of the month, four weeks out from Christmas/New Year. Personally, I'd exclude it and label it an "off-season" month, but it usually comes in just slightly above the "off-season" months in most years.
Off-Season Months (Jan., Feb., May, June, Sept., Oct.): 0-14: Very weak weekdays, often only accounting for ~20% (sometimes less) of their weekly earnings. 15-29: Weaker weekdays, typically accounting for ~35/40% or so of their weekly earnings. 30-49: The most balance age-group once again, with just a slight skew toward better weekends. 50-69: Stronger weekdays, often accounting for ~50-60% of their weekly earnings. 70-84: Very strong weekdays which could account for ~60-70% of their weekly earnings. 85+: Optimal weekday performances, not unusual to see weekday shares accounting for ~70-75% of their weekly earnings.
Note: Like November is a borderline "In-Season" month, September is a borderline "Off-Season" month here. It's the strongest month of any of the "off-season" months, and Silver Week occurs in the month as well, and depending on the year (how the dates align), it can come close to an "in-season" month. But most of the time it's noticeably weaker month that firmly belongs in this group.

Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (05/22-23); Charts Update
I will keep an eye on it this weekend. Also, Cruella is opening this weekend, however, as was the case with Raya and the Last Dragon (which was one of the biggest bombs ever, grossing around $3 or $4 million), neither Toho Cinemas (busiest chain) or Movix Cinemas (third busiest chain) will be screening it, nor are some small chains and independent theaters. So around 35-40% of the nation's theaters are boycotting Disney. I would not expect much at all for Disney releases in the market for quite some time, unless a deal is reached in the future to not also debut their films same-day (minimum request) on Disney+. Warner Bros. hasn't run into chains boycotting their films since HBO Max isn't available in Japan. Japanese theaters boycotting Disney releases *might* be a good things in the long run if the global box office returns to normal to show interest in theatrical releases over streaming, since Japan is frequently one of their best markets (if not their best). Losing 35-40% of their earnings in Japan (and honestly it's probably closer to, or over, 50% since Toho is boycotting them) from films that can earn up to $100 million or more in the market pretty regularly is a lot to miss out on.

Yay! GO JAPAN!!! Keep boycotting Disney As for DS I hope it gets to 29m admissions before it leaves theaters. I know its not a milestone to reach but its so close to it that I hope it gets there. Its still doing 3K admissions so it should get to 20K more before its home media release but it could be very close in the end.

Jack Sparrow wrote: Yay! GO JAPAN!!! Keep boycotting Disney Disney has had just one film gross over ¥500 million (~$5 million) since January 2020, which was Onward grossing about ¥790 million ($7.4 million). And based on Friday's admissions at the usual locations (and independents), Cruella is not likely to get there either. Either Disney has decided to not release their films theatrically at all (Mulan, Soul, etc.), or to release them same-day on Disney+ (Raya, Cruella) which has caused theaters to boycott them. And their upcoming releases are following these two options, too, with Luca not being released theatrically at all (...), and Black Widow and Jungle Cruise debuting same-day on Disney+ which will be boycotted. I know they're making a fortune on Disney+, but it's a little sad that Disney appears to be giving up their title as biggest international distributor with little/no care in one of their top markets. They'll probably drop to third or fourth biggest international distributor (taking Toho-Towa into account which release Universal films in the market) this year. And then overall with local distributors included, Disney will probably be at the bottom of the top 10 distributors in the market.

Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (05/22-23); Charts Update

So on Friday, I'm estimating that it earned about ¥4-4.5 million ($36,000-$41,000) on 3,000-3,500 admissions. This is using an unknown average ticket price of around ¥1,300 (shouldn't be much lower, and probably not much higher). My estimate is based on ticket sold from 47 theaters (where it sold 2,371 tickets) from its theater count of 63 (this is down from its earlier count of 82 due to the SOEs). I'm going to assume it's going to skew a bit younger, so it could see a fair uptick over the weekend. However, I don't see how it's possible to sell up to 60,000 over its first three-days. If it sees a nice uptick over the weekend, I'd predict a three-day total of perhaps 15,000 admissions or so.

Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (05/22-23); Charts Update
So a couple notes:
The SOEs in the 9 prefectures under them (Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Hyogo, Aichi, Okayama, Fukushima, Hokkaido, and Okinawa) have been extended from May 31st up through June 20th. This isn't surprising, as cases, while slowly coming down, still haven't reached a desirable level yet and have remained too persistent over a longer period of time than any past spikes. And I don't think any more prefectures will be added to the list, so the box office will probably remain consistent with the numbers we've seen for the past several weeks.
And, because it's going to happen sooner rather than later, Demon Slayer is about to be bumped out of the Top 10 after 33 weeks in release. This, too, isn't surprising, so just a head's up in case anyone is surprised it occurs this weekend. I think it'll just barely manage to hold onto 10th place this weekend (in 10th), despite falling just outside on Friday, but it could certainly fall to 11th. It's still holding very well, of course, even up week-to-week based on my estimates, it's just that the numbers for it are too low at this point to remain inside the Top 10 for much (or any) longer as new releases bump it down the charts. And with the home video release just 19 days away, I'd consider these next few weeks to be its final stretch.
And finally, I don't want to say this as a matter of fact since it's still unknown and pure speculation, but I wouldn't anticipate any of the events (the giveaway and stage greetings) postponed from May to be rescheduled now that the SOE extension is through June 20th, which is after the home video release date. They'll likely announce one way or the other in the coming days so fans aren't waiting for too long in the dark.
