Brilliant run for Rurouni. I wonder how Part 2 will do should have enough to make more than Part 1.

Also Conan is holding really well. Might not reach 8B but it should get to 7-7.5B now.

It is strange that Japanese mainstream media has not announced the achievement of the movie yet. Normally, the media is very fast on trending news like this. Sometimes Oricon even announced the circulation numbers of the series at midnight.

Well, circulation numbers are known in advance since they're not sales figures and can be controlled by the publisher, so major milestones regarding "shipped" or "circulation" numbers from any sort of media are often reported before any actual sales are reported on.

The earliest that any box office numbers are reported is shortly after noon on Monday, which is right now. I'd expect it to begin being reported in the next couple hours. The official Japanese twitter account for the series has often been first to report its box office milestones, so keep an eye on it.

So I used google translate. There are slight differences. My figure is 52B while they have 51.7B. Main diff is from Europe. They probably didn't added France numbers yet.

Category Order (Left to Right): Country or Region - Publication Date (By Release Date) - Revenue - Admissions - Achievement

Japan - 10/16/20 - ¥40 billion - 29.96 million - #1 Film of All-Time.
Taiwan and Hong Kong - 10/30/20 - ¥2.91 billion - 3.35 million - Highest BO ever for an animated film in Taiwan
Southeast Asia - 11/12/20 - ¥770 million - 1.54 million - Highest BO ever for a Japanese animated film in Singapore.
Korea - 01/27/21 - ¥1.86 billion - 2 million - Achieved 17 weeks in the Top 5.
Australia and New Zealand - 03/18/21 - ¥420 million - 370,000 - OW debuted at #1.
Latin America - 04/22/21 - ¥400 million - 970,000 - Playing in 10 territories.
Europe - 04/22/21 - ¥350 million - 520,000 - #1 OW Debut in Spain.
USA and Canada - 04/23/21 - ¥4.82 billion - 3.35 million - Highest OW ever for a foreign-language film.
Middle East and Africa - 05/12/21 - ¥170 million - 110,000 - Highest BO ever for a Japanese film.

Where did you find this, by the way? Very cool to have admission numbers from other markets. Wouldn't have guessed that tickets in Korea are on the cheaper side. No numbers from Central America is on the list.

And the notable achievement in Latin America is pretty funny too (playing in 10 territories). I don't follow the international market in depth, but I'm guessing that may indeed be a notable achievement for a Japanese film. And apparently it's the biggest Japanese film ever in the Middle East and Africa after 2 weeks. I doubt many Japanese films get released there, but cool stat. And the 17 weeks in the top 5 could be ongoing in Korea (doesn't specifically say).

Got it from a friend.

Yeah Korea ATP is $8 ish.
CENTAM is basically part of LATAM.
LATAM seems like big on anime. Dargon Ball Super Broly opened bigger/par than MCU movies in many LATAM countries. This was bit lower.
Middle East is doing well with Saudi doing over $1M.

Re numbers;

1. Taiwan and Hong Kong I have is 2.73B. I guess they are using current ER of 110 and not 104 what it was when it released.
2. SEA I have higher at 970M and that's with rates of Dec 2020. One possibility is Thailand they are only taking Bangkok and Ching Mi city numbers where it grossed $2.4M while Thailand nationwide number is $4.2M.
3. Korea is alright.
4. ANZ is alright.
5. LATAM is alright.
6. USA, M.E. are fine.
7. Europe I have is 520M. So that is incomplete on their side.

Yes Korea is still in top 5. In fact was #2 last weekend I think.

Corpse, am I wrong if I say that we can expect a final of around ¥40.2Bn ($384M) and 29.1M admissions for DS ?
Btw, Demon Slayer's Monday is up 25% from last Monday. There is still hype for the film even 7 months after its release.

Now DS acquired ¥40 Billion domestically and the movie will soon reach the milestone of $500 million globally. Then, which potential big-hit movie should we discuss next?

Sounds about right to me if it plays out as expected. But if they end up rescheduling the postponed events from May at the start of June, it could go a little higher. Predicting how many could come out for these events, if rescheduled, is about impossible though. And it's very likely the SOEs are going to be extended to June 20th, so I wouldn't expect them to get rescheduled.

Regarding its increase on Monday, and any others in recent days and that could come, they're a little misleading. Not saying there isn't any demand still (it would have dropped off more by now), but when a film is only doing 1,000 or 2,000 admissions a day, it doesn't take much either way to result in a noticeable increase/decrease.

Take Tokyo for example. The city itself has a population of almost 14 million people (and 37 million when including the greater area). Theaters are closed in Tokyo right now, so if a measly 200 or 300 people (0.00002% of the population) decide to take a short trip to a neighboring prefecture (all just a 30 minute train ride away) to see the film right now, it's going to result in a large increase due to the small numbers. This is one of the reasons the percentage changes right now are kind of all over the place since comparing sales of one day to another (or one week to another) contains some unpredictability depending on how many people in Tokyo (and Osaka) may decide to travel a short distance to see a movie somewhere on any given day.

I'm not expecting an uber-blockbuster (¥10 billion+) this year. Evangelion, assuming Detective Conan doesn't receive a major event in the coming weeks/months to potentially recover some of the money it's lost during the SOEs, will almost certainly win the year.

Belle (July 16th) might have potential to breakout big, but it's going to need to be absolutely stellar. The Jujutsu Kaisen movie (expected Winter release) may have potential since it's adapting source material (volume 0) that serves as the prequel to the series that will lead into season 2 of the anime, but it's a bit of an unknown right now. And we can likely rule out all Disney releases for the immediate future until they decide to go theatrical release only again and stop releasing their films same-day on Disney+.

And anything significantly over ¥10 billion, like ¥15 billion+, is almost always unpredictable. Almost all of the top films in the market achieve that status with much lower expectations beforehand. Demon Slayer wasn't really expected to get anywhere close to ¥10 billion, really, yet it became the biggest film of all-time.

Very true. If we and this forum are still be here the next 5-10 years, I hope to see another movie that can surpass the record of ¥40 Billion (with inflation adjustment).

Even with the inflation adjustment, Mugen Train still beats Spirited Away. For Spirited Away:
+ Original run ¥30.8 billion in 2001 are approximately equal to ¥31.485 billion in 2020 (average inflation for this period was around 2%).
+ Re-release run ¥0.8 billion in 2020.

At the end of 2020, Spirited Away only made around ¥32.285 billion with inflation adjustment.

Pretty decent weekend, the best since Golden Week ended.

A Morning Farewell, based on the novel by Kyoko Minami, debuted atop the weekend box office, selling 135,000 admissions across 299 screens, and 161,132 admissions over its first three-days of release. This is a pretty good start, and with normal legs it should be able to reach the ¥1 billion (~$10 million) milestone for Toei.

Beautiful Lure - A Tale of "Painted Skin" "surprised" again this weekend by coming in second place (looked like a distant fourth this weekend, just as it looked like a distant third last weekend) with a great hold, selling an additional 88,343 admissions in its sophomore frame to reach a two-week total of 289,087 admissions. I would have expected some frontloading, but the strong reviews came through for it.

Hell's Garden barely missed second place, selling 87,000 admissions over the weekend frame on 259 screens, and reached 111,961 admissions over it first three-days in release. This likely isn't enough to reach the ¥1 billion milestone, so I'd expect a total around ¥750 million ($7 million) for now.

Rurouni Kenshin: The Final Chapter - The Final barely missed third place, and second place, in its fifth weekend of release. The very impressive holds continue for the film, and it exceeded 2 million admissions after 31 days in release. I expect the strong holds to continue at least until part two, Rurouni Kenshin: The Final Chapter - The Beginning opens on June 4th, however, I also wouldn't be surprised if it continues to have good legs afterwards as business appears to be being stretched out a lot more than usual right now due to the SOEs in effect. Expect a total north of ¥3.5 billion (~$35 million) and over 2.5 million admissions.

Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet rounds out the Top 5 with a solid hold. After six weeks in release, the 24th Detective Conan film has sold over 4.5 million admissions. I don't want to make a final prediction here still since I am expecting Toho to do something for it once the SOEs are lifted in Tokyo and Osaka, but if nothing special is announced, look for a total around ¥7 billion ($65 million) and a bit over 5 million admissions.

Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time sees a hefty decline, but it's also coming off a near 70% increase last weekend due to a mini-poster giveaway that boosted it. The likelihood of it remaining the highest grossing film of 2021 have gone way, way up in recent weeks as Detective Conan has been impacted by the SOEs and nothing on paper for the rest of the year is likely to challenge it. We'll see if it receives any other events to further boost its total a bit, but for the time being, expect a total around ¥8.7 billion ($80 million) and 5.7 million admissions.

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train keeps on keeping on, delivering a strong hold in its 32nd weekend of release, and in the process, became the first film to ever reach the ¥40 billion milestone, now just ¥387 million away from outgrossing the previous #1 film of all-time, Spirited Away, by a totally ridiculous ¥10 billion (minus re-releases). Its 220-day admissions are up to 28,966,806.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Biggest Thirty-Second Weekends
Biggest Thirty-Second Weekends (1998-):

¥95,420,080 ($713,000), NA, ¥29,650,000,000 ($244.9 million) - Spirited Away (2001)
¥20,346,650 ($187,000), -04%, ¥40,016,942,050 ($382.4 million) - Demon Slayer: Mugen Train (2020)
¥17,160,070 ($154,000), -06%, ¥24,838,831,400 ($235.1 million) - Your Name. (2016)

This was the weekend that Spirited Away returned back inside the Top 10 (#4) after falling out in its 27th weekend. Its 31st weekend gross is unknown, but it was ranked 18th, so the 32nd weekend here saw a massive increase due to winning the Oscar and receiving a huge expansion. Using drops a bit better than average for it from weeks 27-31, its 31st weekend may have been around ¥20/25 million, so a potential 32nd weekend increase of 300/400% (possibly higher) was likely.

Also, its 32nd week total wasn't released, so I've estimated it using guesstimated drops (above average) between weeks 27-31 and when it hit ¥30 billion (day 231, or 11 days after this weekend). Its proceeding weekdays would have been huge, possibly double the weekend, given it won the Oscar (first weekdays post BP Oscar wins are always huge), and then it had a strong hold on its 33rd weekend as well.

That's huge for Spirited Away so late in its run, I know its Oscar boost but that number is still difficult to achieve.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Top 100 Grossing Films
Since the previous update:

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train became the first film to ever reach ¥40 billion (just as it was the first film to reach every mark after ¥31 billion), and continues to hold very steady. It's not adding a lot to its total, but the consistent addition of small earnings add up after awhile.

Evangelion: 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time climbs two more positions up the chart to reach #64, and will probably be aiming to crack the Top 60.

Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet enters the Top 125 at #116 after six weeks in release, knocking War of the Worlds off the chart. It'll take several weeks, but it'll eventually crack the Top 100 and target a spot inside the Top 90 at its current pace.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Most Attended Films
Since the previous update:

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train continues to gradually pad its unbelievable record admissions, and will break 29 million during the first week of June.

Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time climbs 5 spots to reach #93. In a few days, it'll break that 5-day tie for 88th place to climb an additional 5 spots to reach #88. Eventually, it should be aiming to crack the Top 85.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (05/22-23); Charts Update
From the last month's initial plan, this weekend, 5 main casts of the movie will have stage greetings in 5 different prefectures on May 29th and 30th.

They possibly wanted to make the last boost for the movie before the home release and promote for the DVD sales. However, the SOE may prevent this from happening.

Yeah, the stage greetings for May 29th/30th were postponed a couple weeks back. They said they'd let people know if they're rescheduled since the SOEs expire on May 31st, but it's very likely the SOEs will be extended to June 20th in a few days. Okinawa was already confirmed for an extension through June 20th, and Osaka and Hyogo have submitted extension requests to central.

Cases have begun to slowly decline, but they're just not low enough yet to lift the SOEs prematurely, especially with the Tokyo Olympics so close. The Olympics will reportedly go on even if Tokyo remains under an SOE, but they obviously don't want that to be the case.

You would think that with the Olympics on their shoulders the Japanese would have gone with a vaccination plan at least as fast-paced as Europe's (which is still slower than the US, Canada, the UK or Israel), but they've been very slow on that front. It frankly doesn't make any sense.

According to Bloomberg, Japan has the lowest population coverage in terms of vaccination of all top 20 economies.
