All the increases today are higher than the usual locations indicate, too.

Without Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Hyogo, the usual locations was already only accounting for 50-55% of the nation's overall sales (down from 70% or so), but Thursday is missing 25 theaters or so from the calculations (I think due to reservations being suspended until day-of sale at some locations for the holiday period).

Therefore, the usual locations is likely only accounting for 45% or so of the overall sales today (and possibly throughout Golden Week).

I'll do my best estimating them later. But most films are likely doing double the admissions overall versus the usual locations now as they were already close to that. I've been underestimating a lot in the last week or two, so I'm going to be liberal this week.

Better under-estimate otherwise people would bring piracy again

Glad to see the Golden Week is bringing big numbers even though it could have been stronger but it proves again that restrictions are improving BO prospects in JP.

So Nomadland didn't debut in the Top 10 back at the end of March (opened in 11th), and no figures were released for it. So I've gone back to estimate it since it's likely going to be in the Top 5 all this week (or 6th) due to the boost it's receiving from winning Best Picture at the Oscars (and Golden Week, but mostly the Oscar boost in its case), and... Japan is very likely already its biggest market, outgrossing its total in the U.S. before Golden Week even began today. Obviously estimating an entire month of release leaves a lot of room for error, but even if they're off a decent bit, that statement is still likely true and certainly will be after today.

Before today's estimate, I've estimated a five-week total (plus this past Mon-Wed) of ¥255 million ($2.3 million). It's probably on track to gross over ¥500 million (~$5 million). Of course, I'm going to presume it'll get a big expansion in the U.S. this week too, so it may end up grossing over $5 million in the U.S. as well, but we'll have to wait and see since no dailies have been released for it yet in the U.S. this week.

Great numbers! I wonder how big they would have been with Tokyo and Osaka. Also DS is looking good to get 39.9B by Golden week so the rest should be easy without any push from here on till home media release.

It really depends on how the dates align (which holidays fall on which days), but the numbers are quite good. Detective Conan would have increased over 100% (yesterday was still very good though), for example, and Evangelion and Ensemble Stars!! would have had much higher increases since they're more reliant on Tokyo's business.

What makes this year look lower is mostly because of the bottom half of the Top 10 being so low. There's no big Hollywood films, and there's usually at least two or three doing good numbers this time of year, and a few local films got pushed back as well. But the top half of the Top 10 is doing very well so far.

Obviously if Tokyo and Osaka had their theaters opened the numbers would be higher, although I'm thinking Tokyo's SOE isn't have as much of an impact as one might expected. It's the busiest prefecture by far, but the neighboring prefectures are all open and within 30 minutes of travel. There's likely a good number of people traveling outside Tokyo for the holiday week to Chiba, Saitama, and Kanagawa which is helping lessen the impact.

Yeah, it may not have been needed, but better now than days before the release if the SOEs are extended beyond May 11th. Hoping it ends up in July like I thought it would originally. The Olympics aren't allowing foreign spectators this year and athletes won't be allowed to travel outside their designated housing areas (which would have boosted the box office a lot, presumably, especially for non-Japanese films), but July (or late-June) is much better than May.

Friday will be the lowest day during Golden Week 2021 since it's the only non-holiday/non-weekend day during the entire frame this year. (And landing between a holiday and discount day doesn't help).

For the upcoming days, look for May 3rd, 4th, and 5th to be similar to April 29th. May 1st is a discount day, so it'll do well, but probably not holiday well. May 2nd will be bigger than Friday, but similar to Friday, it also falls between a holiday and a discount day, so a portion of its business will probably go to Saturday and Monday (meaning those two days could come in higher than expected).

And that's all again this week, until Demon Slayer is added in a few days at least. This was also Your Name.'s last weekend in the Top 10, so Demon Slayer will tie Your Name.'s 29-consecutive weeks in the Top 10 this weekend, and surpass that next week to become only the second film to achieve 30 or more consecutive weeks in the Top 10 after Titanic.

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train will be targeting an increase this weekend (4DX re-expansion + discount day on Sat. + holiday period weekend). It will need a 44% jump in order to take the 29th Weekend Record away from Your Name., but I wouldn't expect an increase that high without Tokyo/Osaka. The Friday-to-Friday increase is encouraging though and suggests it's at least possible since Friday was pretty close to last Sunday's gross.

It'll be close to those marks there after May 5th, yeah. I'm guessing ¥39.88 and 28.87 million admissions.

It's managed a Sat-to-Sat increase despite theaters in Tokyo and Osaka (and its neighboring prefectures) being closed. Today's a discount day in the middle of a major holiday week, sure, and I was expecting a weekend increase, just didn't think Saturday itself would be so strong since the closures went into effect last Sunday.

¥40 billion will probably be crossed around the third or fourth weeks of May, or a full month before it's released on home video (which will effectively conclude its run).

Yeah, the 4DX re-expansion that began April 29th for Golden week is one of the reasons it's increased for the past 3 days.

Very good Saturday, better than expected I think across the board. Note that the drops/increases compared to last Saturday are versus Saturday with Tokyo and Osaka still open, so they're very impressive. Sunday will be a direct comparison without Tokyo/Osaka, so tomorrow's % changes could potentially be even better.
