178-Day Cumulative Total: ¥39,613,585,950 ($378.68 million) / 28,695,157 Admissions

Note: Mon.-Fri. are rounded estimates (excluding Holiday Mondays), therefore adding up each day won't equal the exact actual total.

An unusual drop for a Sunday, but it wasn't an isolated occurrence or anything as it happened with most films yesterday.

Less than ¥400 million away from its final goal of ¥40 billion now. Look for it to get there at the very end of April, or more likely over Golden Week in the first week of May. Its total after the first week of May won't be its final total, as it'll have another 6 weeks or so before the home video release, but it will be pretty close and should allow for a pretty good final projection.

My preliminary final projection is ~¥40.5 billion (~$386 million) with 29.3 million admissions.

Quick question Corpse, but when KnY Mugen Train finishes its run, which movie will you do dailies next?

I'm assuming JJK (if it does a great opening weekend). But before that, which movie will you cover?
Or will you be taking a break first (understandable since you also need to rest every once in a while)

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Estimates (04/09-10)
I've just been doing Demon Slayer since it's the biggest film of all time by an unfathomable margin. This is a once in a lifetime event that will never happen again, and nothing is going to come even close this century (just doing half of what it's done is unlikely).

I don't want to go down the monstrous list of records broken and achievements accomplished, I've done that in the past many times already, but you have to reach week 4 of its run before it even becomes comparable to any other film (in their first week) in history. Every other film before it looks small in comparison.

Just some examples here, but you have to combine what were considered massive performances from Frozen and Avatar just to even match Demon Slayer. Demon Slayer has grossed more than Princess Mononoke and Howl's Moving Castle combined (and will be very close to their admissions combined). Demon Slayer has grossed more than and has sold more tickets than Titanic and E.T. combined. And lastly, it'll only a little over 1 million admissions shy of selling the combined tickets of Titanic and Princess Mononoke. There are many other crazy stats like this, such as earning 80% worth of the combined totals of Frozen AND Your Name., etc.

Its box office nearly matches the combined box office (including admissions) of every film in the Jurassic Park franchise (5 films), or the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise (5 films), or even the entire MCU (23 films). And it eclipses the entire franchise earnings for One Piece (14 films), Spider-Man (8 films), Middle-Earth (6 films), Toy Story (4 films), among others.

It would be nice. I was more thinking something like ¥40,3Bn ($384M) with 29,1 million admissions, it's even better.

I see.
So you'll just focus on weeklies after its run ended huh

Still down from Spring Break which was still boosting last Monday-Wednesday. It's still the biggest day at this stage besides maybe versus Your Name.

Everything is down 50/60%. Tom & Jerry is even down 90% due to Spring Break.

If you guys want, I could post the estimated dailies for the top 10. But I want to make perfectly clear that Mon-Fri dailies are less accurate when predicting individually since each day is unique.

Mondays are Aeon Cinema Days, so average ticket prices are a little lower than normal. Also, films that skew younger do better at Aeon Cinemas on average, so you have to determine which films are being impacted on them.

Tuesdays fall between two beneficial days, so it's typically the weakest day of the week. However, if a film has little/no female or family appeal, they can perform similarly to the other weekdays. And with no discounts available (unless a particular cinema's own discount day falls on it), Tuesday is regularly one of the most expensive days to see a movie, thus resulting in it having an above average ticket price.

Wednesdays are Ladies Day, so all females get discounted tickets. This lowers the average ticket price for any film skewing female, and greatly so in some cases because it's not unusual for certain films to have a 80%/90% female share. Also, family films can benefit if they skew young enough for stay at home mothers to take their young kids out.

Thursdays are similar to Tueadays, except some films can do a little better if they're facing noticeable showing/screen count loses on Friday. The weekend schedule is available by this time, so interested audiences sometimes come out more than on Tuesday if the film they want to see has a more available showing before Friday.

Fridays have the weakest morning showings of any day of the week due to people prioritizing work/studies ahead of the weekend, but also the strongest evening/night showings relative to morning/afternoon business. Chage in showings/screen counts happen on Fridays too, so behavioral patterns for holdovers often change and need reevaluating for the upcoming week.

And on top of this, every film is different. Besides long-running franchise films, most everything else attracts different demographics and on different days of the week. One family film doesn't mean it'll perform like another family film. One R15 rated film doesn't mean it'll behave like anothrr R15 rated film. And so on, and so on. No two films are really the same.

So I'll be happy to do weekday estimates for the top 10, just know they're rough estimates. It takes weeks to work out how an individual film peforms on each individual weekday. I don't want to regularly explain about why this film didn't do what that film did, or why this film fell harder than it did last week, etc.

I agree with Jack. I don't think dailies for weekdays are particularly interesting unless it's a holiday period or a really big film is playing.

It's not overly difficult for me to do the daily estimates.

I've been doing this for 10+ years and have a general idea of how most films will perform on each day, what time of day they're strongest, what demographics are coming out to see them, if they play better in urban or rural prefectures (relative to the average), what avg. ticket price they may be aiming for, and so on. And all this becomes easier after the first 1/2 weeks of release. If I just use what I know and apply it to every film versus focusing on each individual film, it's no issue.

If just a couple people would want to see my daily estimates, I can do them. I just don't want anyone thinking they're 99% accurate and go on to question why a film came in lower/higher at the end of the week.

That's what I expect in the end happening not from the existing pool of posters but lurkers who join here occasionally will end up questioning these estimates so I'm not sure it's worth it. Having said all that if it's not big effort than I have in the past expressed interest in daily estimates. We can together handle people questioning because the existing posters are matured enough to handle most of these new joiners/questions.

I'd be interested in daily estimates, but outside of holiday periods really only for the few weeks following the release of a big film.

If anything maybe you should just track the biggest films like you've tracked Demon Slayer instead of posting daily estimates for the top 10 of which 70-80% will be films most people don't know/care about? Less demanding and probably a higher return on investment.

Hmmmm I agree, I don't know if it'll interest the newcomers/lurkers.
Instead of the daily, how about comparing all the top 10's greatest week on who had the highest gross?
I mean, Demon Slayer will be number 1 since its first week is so huge, but I think everyone should be curious about everything else in the ranking, right?

Thanks for the feedback.

I'll post the estimated dailies for the bigger films and see how that goes. We'll have an early on this upciming weekend with Detective Conan, too.

Also, Weekend Actuals will be posted in an hour or so. Didn't quite have time to spend on them yesterday evening as I normally do.

What I am iffy on is though if can open higher than the last film. Like the totals of the last seven or eight films increasing over the last film, so have the opening weekends. The last two sold over 1 million admissions over their opening weekends--that's a huge bar to clear. And this year's film, even if it is breaking the theater count record, is at a handicap from theaters in the busiest prefectures closing at 8/9pm. So it'll be missing out on what is usually the strongest period of the day for the franchise in recent years (the 7/8pm showings) since the showings must end by 8pm, meaning the last showings have to start at 6pm or earlier.

I checked around some of the big locations, a lot of them have conan playing 30+ times a day on friday (toho shinjuku has it playing 43 times!).

I don't know if it'll top KnY on screen amount (my guess would be it'll be lower at the big locations, but I don't know if the higher theater count can make up for this or not), but I'm guessing it'll likely atleast come in second? Either way, with how wide it's playing, I have little doubts it'll more than make up for the theaters closing early around tokyo and be the biggest debut in the franchise.

Yeah, I'm not surprised it's getting 30/40 showings a day at the busiest locations. It's incredibly impressive of course, probably second only to Demon Slayer in history (looks above Frozen II to me at the moment), it's just that this was in prime position to have a ton of screens and showings. The market is pretty open now so it'll be taking all the biggest, second biggest, and likely third biggest screens at every theater, it's opening simultaneous on every premium format (a first in the market), and to make up for the early closings (8pm) theaters were likely to give it an extra screen(s) for additional showings during the day.

Also, I was going to share this in the Weekend Actuals later, but I don't want it to get overlooked:

Based on the box office for the top 3 domestic distributors in Japan (Toho, Toei, Shochiku): the 2021 Box Office in March was up 378.2% versus March 2020, and the first three months of 2021 were up 169.8%.

Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time repeats for a fifth consecutive weekend. The farewell film has now sold 4,848,041 admissions after 35-days in release, so it'll be exceeding the 5 million mark very soon. I've been projecting a finish around ¥8.5 billion (~$80 million), and I'm not changing that figure right now, but if it can manage a fair hold against Detective Conan this upcoming weekend, it could be aiming for ¥9 billion (~$85 million). Prior to its release, expectations were either matching or coming in a bit above its predecessor's ¥5.33 billion total (already very impressive). But it has long since shattered that number, and is looking to finish 60-70% above it.

Monster Hunter is very close to the ¥1 billion milestone after its third weekend of release, and will exceed the mark in a few days. It has sold 647,993 admissions after 17-days in release. Look for a total around ¥1.3 billion (~$12 million). Not a spectacular result by any means, and you can probably rule it a disappointment, but considering Japan will come reasonable close to being its biggest overall market, it's not that bad.

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train came so, so close (0.56% away!) in breaking the 26th weekend record! Still a huge weekend at this stage of course, second biggest ever. After 178-days in release, it has now sold 28,696,998 admissions, selling an additional 110,822 over the last week. The end of its run is now in sight, still off in the distance a bit, but it's at least in sight for the first time. My preliminary final projection is a gross of ~¥40.5 billion (~$386 million) and 29.3 million admissions. And that's ¥10 billion higher and almost 6 million more admissions than the previous all-time records (both Spirited Away). ¥10 billion and 6 million admissions... I'll go into more detail on just how significant that margin is in the future. Spoiler: It's a record, mind-boggling margin.

Caution, Hazardous Wife: The Movie got so close to hitting ¥1 billion after its fourth week of release. It got there on Monday though, so nice accomplishment either way. These type of performances can be forgotten sometimes (unless you follow the box office in-depth like I do), but they're very important for the overall health of the box office.

Overall, a so-so weekend, one that would have been better if a couple Hollywood films were playing. The Japan Box-Office can easily survive without major Hollywood support, but without that support, there will be some "down" weekends like this one. This weekend, however, is often a bit "weak" since not much of interest opens on it since it's between Spring Break and Golden Week. Most studios just release their films ahead of Spring Break, or wait until Golden Week is closer.

No entries this week, but look for a BIG one next week with the 24th Detective Conan, which is almost guaranteed to be the biggest OW in all of 2021, and may potentially to make a big impact on the all-time opening weekend charts as well.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Top 100 Grossing Films
Demon Slayer: Mugen Train adds ¥184 million more to its long-achieved all-time gross, on track to exceed ¥40 billion in the next few weeks.

Evangelion: 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time rises an impressive 12 spots to 84th place after just 35-days in release. If may be aiming for a spot in the Top 60. It wasn't really expected to be a Top 100 contender, or if so just barely, so just another accomplishment for Evangelion's farewell movie.

Also, only 4 films remain in the Top 100 that are now below ¥7 billion. I doubt the Top 100 will consist of only ¥7 billion+ earners by the end of the year, but it'll be achieved next year for sure.

Top 100 Highest-Grossing Films of All-Time

001. ¥39.62 billion ($378.8 million) - Demon Slayer: Mugen Train (2020) *178-Day Total*
002. ¥31.68 billion ($261.2 million) - Spirited Away (2001)*
