Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Timeline of All-Time #1 Films
Attack on Titan, easily one of the most monumental series ever, ended today with the release of its final chapter (139), concluding its titanic run which began 12 years ago.

If anyone is interested in discussing it with other members here, don't do so in this thread; rather, go to the discussion thread by Magnus here: viewtopic.php?f=74&t=88041

NOTE! A very BIG NOTE: Spoilers will be present, so open the thread at your own risk.

Really curious to see how big Conan's weekend will manage to be next week with all these theaters. I'm guessing it'll very likely be the highest grosser in the franchise, but by how much? I expect it to at the very least break the 10bln barrier.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Timeline of All-Time #1 Films
Just a reminder that this upcoming weekend is likely to see some pretty harsh declines. Demon Slayer, in particular, is going to see a huge drop. Its 26th weekend is coming off of two back-to-back giveaway events (resulting in the first weekend jumping 106%, and the second another 39%), in addition to coming off of Spring Break. This will very likely be its biggest weekend drop (percentage) during its entire run. But it's obviously expected given how much it's been increasing week-to-week since mid-March.

And just in general, this weekend is usually weak since it's between Spring Break and Golden Week.

Really curious to see how big Conan's weekend will manage to be next week with all these theaters. I'm guessing it'll very likely be the highest grosser in the franchise, but by how much? I expect it to at the very least break the 10bln barrier.

I'm not concerned about it becoming the highest grossing film in the franchise, as it should either get closer to ¥10 billion than its predecessors or may even reach that mark for the first time. A lot of films have been accomplishing similar feats (franchise records and such) in the last 6+ months. And what an incredible achievement that would be for an annual film franchise to reach uber-blockbuster status. Exceeding ¥9 billion was already massive for the last two films.

What I am iffy on is though if can open higher than the last film. Like the totals of the last seven or eight films increasing over the last film, so have the opening weekends. The last two sold over 1 million admissions over their opening weekends--that's a huge bar to clear. And this year's film, even if it is breaking the theater count record, is at a handicap from theaters in the busiest prefectures closing at 8/9pm. So it'll be missing out on what is usually the strongest period of the day for the franchise in recent years (the 7/8pm showings) since the showings must end by 8pm, meaning the last showings have to start at 6pm or earlier.

The good news for its opening: It largely has an open market next weekend. Evangelion is falling quickly now, Demon Slayer just had its last big push, and none of the most recent openers broke out or anything. So it'll be hitting everything hard by taking all the biggest screens and racking up a huge showtime count to help counter the earlier closings. Having very few evening/night showings will put a cap on how wide it opens, but it's still likely to achieve the most seating and showtimes in the franchise (and likely among the highest of all time) from the open market. It's going to be similar to when Demon Slayer opened back in October, just with the early closing handicap that Demon Slayer didn't suffer from.

Furthermore, Disney cancelling Black Widow in the market means it'll only have Rurouni Kenshin's finale as competition for screens/showings throughout all of Golden Week. The franchise usually has to share and split the biggest screens every year with at least a couple big Hollywood films, but not so this year.

That was a lot lengthier than I intended... In short, its total will be absolutely fine and I'd be surprised if it doesn't set a franchise record. While the opening weekend might be handicapped unless it makes up for the loss of evening/night showings with the help of extra screens/showings during the day that it wouldn't get in a normal year due to little/no Hollywood competition.

And breaking the theater count record (while opening simultaneously across all premium formats--first film to do this, as it's typically a process) will assist it with both, but especially so over its opening weekend/first week or two.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Detective Conan Box Office History
In anticipation for next week (and I'll post this again next week), here's Detective Conan's Box Office History. Note that next week's film (Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet) was originally scheduled for April 2020, but got delayed to April 2021. And that was likely a great move, as going with a non-traditional month for Doraemon and Pokemon last year didn't work too well. Audiences expect them in their traditional month every year, and Detective Conan has grown so much that putting it a different month is probably too risky.

2020 was the first year though without a Detective Conan release since it began back in 1997.

Detective Conan Box-Office History (1997-):

Opening Weekends:

Corpse, do you have the list of best 26th record ? Would be interesting if DS can have this record despite the big drop coming. And what do you expert for this weekend ? Me I'm expecting something like 70% drop but idk

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Biggest 26th Weekends
Biggest 26th Weekends (2000-):
¥x72.3 million ($0.6 million), -14%, ¥24.34 billion ($230.5 million) - Your Name. (2016)
¥x55.0 million ($0.5 million), -30%, ¥29.15 billion ($240.2 million) - Spirited Away (2001)

Note: Spirited Away is estimated based on its weekend ranking in admissions (7th, down from 5th).

That's all again. And this is the last weekend with any workable numbers for Spirited Away for awhile. It fell outside the top 10 in its 27th weekend, so I won't be able to estimate anything for it. It'd return to the top 10 in its 32nd weekend when it received its post-Oscar/push to reach ¥30 billion expansion.

Demon Slayer is going to come close either way this weekend in claiming the record. I'm also expecting something around a 70% drop this weekend, which puts it right with Your Name., basically. It needs to drop 69.47% or better to take the 26th weekend record.

I'm going to post the Weekend Forecast a little later than usual this weekend, probably around ~9pm EST.

This will also serve as a good template in determining when Demon Slayer reaches ¥40 billion, and possibly how much more it earns above that mark.

Your Name. was ¥663 million away from ¥25 billion after its 26th weekend. Demon Slayer will likely be less than ¥400 million away from ¥40 billion with a possible comparable 26th weekend.

It'd take Your Name. a very long time (around 3 more months) to get to ¥25 billion from this point, but Demon Slayer will be noticeably closer to its final goal of ¥40 billion after its 26th weekend and won't take nearly as long. It should cross ¥40 billion within a month.

05 (06) ¥x57,000,000 ($520,000), -28%, ¥495,000,000 ($4.5 million), Kiba: The Fangs of Fiction (Shochiku) WK3
06 (05) ¥x56,000,000 ($510,000), -30%, ¥990,000,000 ($9.0 million), Caution, Hazardous Wife: The Movie (Toho) WK4
07 (07) ¥x44,000,000 ($405,000), -31%, ¥710,000,000 ($6.5 million), Tom & Jerry (Warner Bros.) WK4
08 (11) ¥x35,000,000 ($320,000), -10%, ¥105,000,000 ($1.0 million), Ensemble Stars!! Music Garden Delay Viewing (Toho) WK2
09 (08) ¥x33,000,000 ($300,000), -25%, ¥3,615,000,000 ($34.8 million), Loved Like a Flower Bouquet (Tokyo Theaters, Co./Little More) WK11
10 (---) ¥x30,000,000 ($275,000), 0, ¥x40,000,000 ($0.4 million), 21 Bridges (Showgate) NEW
11 (09) ¥x25,000,000 ($230,000), -45%, ¥340,000,000 ($3.1 million), Girls und Panzer the Finale - Part 3 (Showgate) WK3

Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time is starting to slow down, but will easily achieve a fifth weekend atop the box office. The numbers it's doing right now though are still good though. After Sunday, it'll have earned almost 40% more than the lifetime total of its predecessor.

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train is going to experience a very large drop following two back-to-back weekend increases (big increases at 106% and 39% after that), but could still break the 26th Weekend Record as long as it drops less than 69.47%. Based on its Saturday pre-sales, they're on par with (slightly higher than) those from three weeks ago, so going with a weekend gross right around what it earned over its 23rd weekend.

Caution, Hazardous Wife: The Movie will be right on the cusp of ¥1 billion after Sunday. My prediction is that it'll just barely be shy, but it'll be very close. Either way, it'll get there on either Sunday or Monday.

Ensemble Stars!! is a bit of a shot in the dark. It held very well (sub-20%) on Friday-to-Friday, and its Saturday pre-sales are on par with last week, so it's *probably* in store for either a great hold (which I'm predicting) or a potential increase (too hard to say for limited releases like this). No numbers came out for it last weekend, but it came in 11th place in admissions, so it should get into the Top 10 in its second weekend.

Went ahead and put Girls und Panzer the Finale - Part 3 here since it could remain in the Top 10 if either it holds better, and/or 21 Bridges comes in a little lower. Also, Freaky has a slight chance of cracking the Top 10 in its debut, but it performed a bit worse than 21 Bridges on Friday, so I'm predicting it'll miss. Whatever happens, these three films should rank 10th-12th in some way.

And as you can see, the market is slowing down a good bit right now, so expect Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet to take advantage of this next weekend as every theater (and it's opening in a record amount) is going to give it their largest screen (and probably second and/or third largest screens too) with as many showings as they can.

Seems like almost 80% drop today, it will be difficult to get 26th weekend record now.

It's still in good shape to break the 26th weekend record despite the ~77% (or so) drop versus last Saturday. We have to go back 3 weeks to find a week/weekend that didn't benefit from something, and when we do that, it's only down 10% versus the Saturday from 3 weeks ago. And note that's down 10% in admissions, and likely a couple % better in revenue since it didn't have Dolby Cinema showings 3 weeks ago.

As long as it can enjoy a small Sunday bump, no reason that it shouldn't on a regular weekend like this, it has the slight edge of taking the 26th weekend record. Just using the 10% admission drop versus 3 Saturdays ago for the weekend itself, it'd earn around ¥74/75 million, just enough to get the record.

But we'll see. It was going to be very close either way.

Hi Corpse, I'm momentarily quitting my lurking to ask you a couple of questions :P

Do you happen to know any numbers for the Fate Heaven's Feel 3 re-release which started on 3/22? I'm curious to know if at last it managed to reach 2 billion yen.
Also, do you believe that Evangelion 3.0+1.0 is still on track to reach at least 8.5 billion yen?

Thank you for your hard work!

I haven't seen any updates for it, but I can go back to get a rough estimates to see what it earned from its re-release (or was it an expansion?). I'm going to presume it did reach ¥2 billion though since it was pretty close, and that was the whole purpose of re-releasing/expanding it.

And yes, I'm still expecting a finish around ¥8.5 billion for Evangelion. Pretty crazy number far exceeding all expectations. It'll be over 4x more than the first film, over 2x more than the second film, and close to 50% more than both of the first two films combined. Also, it'll finish around 60% higher than the third film. And finally, it'll finish with around 75% of the combined gross of all three previous films. I've said it a couple times, but once again, this is how a finale, series-ending release is suppose to go out.

Thanks, MagicTrick.

There is another round of stage greetings for Evangelion today (Sunday), so it may see a Sun-to-Sun increase (stage greeting showings almost always sell out). Saturday also held pretty well (-23%), so a flat Sunday or potential increase is going to give it a very good hold this weekend. My bad for missing the stage greetings when doing the Weekend Forecast. They must have been announced late in the week.

Rough Sunday across the board, Evangelion aside which benefitted from stage greetings.

Some theaters that were closing at 9pm went back to 8pm again due to rising Covid cases, so that probably had some impact (sales really slowed down at 7pm), but that alone shouldn't have had a clearly noticeable impact on everything. The new school year began last week, so perhaps that attributed to the weaker day as well as studies took more of a priority with the year just starting.

A rough Sunday led to some sizable decline this weekend, which was already likely to have some bigger drops due to coming off of Spring Break.

Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time held incredibly well due to sold out stage greetings on Sunday. It's earned over a whopping ¥2 billion more than its predecessor now and has a good bit left in the tank. I was projecting it'd finish around ¥8.5 billion, and I don't want to project any higher yet, but it is gradually increasing its chances of finishing a bit higher.
