 Re: 3 day weekend estimates
After We Collided did well in its international debut this weekend. Quote: ‘After We Collided’ debuts with strong $7.9m
Voltage Pictures’ After We Collided arrived in multiple territories last Wednesday (September 2), scoring particularly well in Italy, Spain and Portugal, where it was the top title, and delivering an estimated $7.9m for the five-day period.
The film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Anna Todd, and is a sequel to 2019’s After, which is likewise adapted from a Todd novel. (Other books in the series are After We Fell, After Ever Happy and prequel Before.)
The romantic drama is directed by Roger Kumble (Cruel Intentions) and stars Josephine Langford and Hero Fiennes Tiffin. After We Collided grossed $58m internationally and $12m domestically in 2019 for a $70m global total.
The film’s top territories in order of box office merit are Germany ($2.32m from 511 sites); Italy ($2.14m from 641 sites); Spain ($1.06m from 294 sites); Czech Republic and Slovakia ($520,000); and Austria ($428,000).
Numbers were significantly ahead of the opening sessions for After in Italy, Portugal and Spain – where the film is distributed respectively by 01 Distribution, Cinemundo and Sun/Diamond.
After We Collided arrives this week in Sweden, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Poland, Estonia, Lithuania, Albania and various nations from former Yugoslavia. Russia and other markets follow a week later.

 Re: 3 day weekend estimates
The likelihood of a critical mass getting inoculated by mid-2021 is slim (assuming there is a vaccine by the end of the year). The 2021 boxoffice is in jeopardy as well. Studios are going to gave to look long and hard at their 2021 tentpoles, especially those delayed to 2021. We could see most people seeing the major blockbusters only via SVOD.

So Bad Boys and Sonic could be the top grossing movies of the decade until mid 2021/2022?

 Re: 3 day weekend estimates
To those talking about how things should be further pushed- movie theaters are already surviving on government bailouts. Theaters can’t survive if tent poles aren’t released. They will close and not reopen. Theaters will likely be allowed to reopen nationwide in a month or 2. It’s better to take lower grosses now than keep pushing and never be able to release in theaters and kill the model entirely.

 Re: 3 day weekend estimates
It may make more business sense for some theaters to close if sales continues to be so low that it costs them more to open than to close.
I remember in Hong Kong back in late March when the second wave hit, business was so dire that theaters owners were lobbying the government to impose a closing order so they could get a rent freeze and avoid other legal obligations. Theaters were closed for 40 days then.

 Re: 3 day weekend estimates
I don't think anyone mentioned above theaters closing down now to open later. Even Excel only mentioned that things will get better eventually.

https://worldofkj.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=87212I mean I get the fact that so many uninformed journalists would not take the pandemic into account and call it a flop, but I think everyone knows it wasn't going to be well. If WB was happy, they wouldn't have delayed WW again. But this is silly. It'd be like most sports playing the season for fun this year.

 Re: 3 day weekend estimates
Good article. It will be interesting to see if a precedent is set and studios start masking boxoffice returns.

 Re: 3 day weekend estimates
I think this is just WB trying to put a rosy picture and cover their mistake of pushing release early when cinemas/people were clearly not ready. Imagine if Tenet was doing $2m-$3m over weekdays they would have definitely released estimates for those.
