 Re: True Detective: Season 2
There are also moments when you can tell Nic Pizzolatto is trying to recapture the magic of, "Time is a flat circle." Vince Vaughn particularly has to wrangle a few spectacularly ponderous and wordy nuggets.

 Re: True Detective: Season 2
It seemed to me like every female in this was a babe. Vaughn's wife is a total babe. My personal favourite babe was Kitsch's soon-to-be-wife. McAdams is a babe. Then there's all the babes at the party. The girl that lied about blowing motorcycle cop Kitsch was such a sexy babe too! Everyone apart from the fat black was a babe. This series understands that element very well. One thing I noticed and didn't quite like is how basically McAdams was Cohle from season one. She was the true detective. But they never seemed to spend much time on her story. She could fight, and was dedicated to her profession. A lot more time was spent on Farrell, who I preferred anyway, but it was just strange that they would dedicate so much time to other people (Vaughn had loads of screen time!) when the show is called True Detective and McAdams was clearly just that. Nice to see David Morse too. And Tommy Rosales Jr. It is strange how season two, while sharing a lot with season one, is really quite different, and I appreciated that.

 Re: True Detective: Season 2
The show has the same feeling and style of writing from season 1, but it's results are so different. Mostly it feels like another showing was trying to copy season 1, and even doing it better, but failing instead.

How does Colin Farrell (a dark-haired, thin male) and Abigail Spencer (a dark-haired, thin female) have a fat, ginger-haired kid?
I didn't like that.

I didn't like that. They should have never shown the paternity test's results. Completely undermined the dynamic of the Farrell character caring for the child, "his" or not.

 Re: True Detective: Season 2
I forget where I read this, but I was amused by the idea (jokingly proposed halfway through this season's airing) of it ending with the Melancholy Songstress testifying to everything she overheard.

 Re: True Detective: Season 2
The live singer in the club was a great addition to season two. She even played one of the songs from season one. She may have even been the original performer and they got her for that reason.

And Vince Vaughn was just miscast. I loved Vaughn in this, I think no-one could even have played that better. And ok, the Daddario part didn't define the season, but that was the best nude scene I've ever scene on tv.

I just had such a hard time seeing him as this kingpin ex-hard man that everyone is so afraid of. Christopher Walken in the 90s would have nailed this role. I cannot think of any modern day actors that could have done it, but Vaughn certainly didn't do the role justice either. I actually think any real actor could have done a better job than Vaughn did. He's a fucking comedian. I'm all for them branching out, but that doesn't mean they always hit home runs when they do branch out.

 Re: True Detective: Season 2
I also noticed the choppy editing in season two, especially to cover up how bad at fighting Vince Vaughn is and how unskilled with knives Rachel McAdams is.

 Re: True Detective: Season 2
I thought Vaughn did a great job, but I would not say no other actor could have played the role.
I could see, say, Eric Bana or Josh Brolin or Danny Huston as Frank Semyon.

 Re: True Detective: Season 2
Benicio Del Toro would have been ace. Much more believable as a man you feel could inflict pain on someone, plus a man that you may empathise with. Not once did I side with Vaughn (which I assume they wanted you to since they spent so much time on him). I just wanted Farrell to shoot him.

 Re: True Detective: Season 2
Hehe...I pretty much felt Vaughn was the main, main character of this show. Farrell and McAdams equally had their own story lines effecting the causes around them, and Kitsch had his black-ops and gay thing going on, but it always felt less important. Vaughn story I thought was actually the least interesting, what do I care he lost his shares with Casperre's murder, I felt it was forced at times trying to put his story line in there with the police side. He aced the character though.
I really did want to know more about the Black Mountain stuff, Ani's childhood, and Farrell's demise from honest to crooked. I also was expected the show to have the multiple timeslines format again, but that never happened. If they did that to explain some things, while not having a lot of character arcs started but never finished, the show might have been better. It probably shouldn't have the police interrogation thing copied, but large flashbacks connecting the plot together I probably would have enjoyed.

 Re: True Detective: Season 2
Season Two added the female and gay element. I wonder what Season Three will add. Perhaps a black hero. Or a tranny.
Regardless, I am really looking forward to it.

 Re: True Detective: Season 2
I would love to see Ewan McGregor and/or Guy Pearce in a season of True Detective. Or the aforementioned Eric Bana.

 Re: True Detective: Season 2
I'm in no hurry to see Ewan McGregor, but Eric Bana and Guy Pearce, yes! Actually I think Pearce would be especially fantastic. He could play the true detective. And Bana could play the Woody Harrelson/Ralph Sarchie.
I wonder where they'll go next. Perhaps California might be good, though I hope they keep the trend of using smaller town/rural police forces.

But yeah, the location will be wildly interesting and wildly important...agree a smaller town setting has worked great so far.
