 Re: Up
Woo, I finally got to see this! This movie was awesome!! Definetly one of Pixar's best. It made me laugh, and it made me cry. (Just lucky that my manly tears were covered up by 3D glasses. ), simply put. One of the best movies of the year and possibly one of the best animated movies ever!! Grade: A

 Re: Up
Like Goktor Who stated above, I thought the switch from an adult themed movie to zany kids movie was rather jarring. The first half was surprisingly good and I really liked the somewhat heavier theme and feel for this type of movie.
I didn't even mind a few of the things that were obviously thrown in for kids - like Kevin and Dug. But, I thought it really veered too far into kiddy territory by the end and it was not a natural feeling shift for the movie to take.
Despite the flaw, in the end it was an enjoyable and well done flick. Grade: B+

 Re: Up
Finally got to see this and colour me surprised. I'd rank it just below Ratatouille but well ahead of the overrated Wall-e. Yes the shift in tone from serious and touching to slightly zany was a little jarring but no more than what happened in Wall-e. At least in Up the kids part of the film was still entertaining.
Grade : A

With WALL-E and this back-to-back Pixar has delivered its best double punch to date (too bad Toy Story 3 disappointed me). I really really liked WALL-E and I admire its ambitiousness and its achievements. But the movie that really struck the right cord with me was Up.
As I said, it is not the technical achievement that WALL-E was and there's less originality in it too. But while the WALL-E/EVE pairing and their interaction pretty much made that film and provided its heart, none of WALL-E's moments comes really close to that montage of Carl's and Ellie's life is the closest an animated film has ever got me to tears and is the most brilliant sequence Pixar has ever created. I am at a loss of words about how touching, genuine and ultimately crushing it felt. This goes on to show Pixar's grandness and the ability to create a fun and funny animated flick and yet, in the very same film, touch upon such heavy topics like miscarriage, unfulfilled dreams and death of a loved one.
The movie never reaches that level of sincerity and heartfelt emotions as in that scene, but how could it anyway? Instead it goes on to become a very fun action romp with great characters to boot. Carl Fredricksen is one of Pixar's best characters to date. One has gotta admire the ability to have an 80+ year old character carry a successful animated film like this one! Dug the Dog is fun too, but it's Kevin the Bird that steals the show here. Christopher Plummer's villain Muntz is quite good too. The only character I wasn't too fond of was Russell as I found him rather annoying in some scenes, but I could live with that.
I also loved the touching ending with the house landing at the waterfalls. So basically, it is a very moving film at the beginning and the end and a fun action comedy in the middle. Those elements work together perfectly in this one and create a terrific blend that I consider one of the best animated films not only of the last decade, but ever. Pixar has outdone itself once again.
If there's one more thing I'd complain about here is the utter lack of necessity for 3D in this film. It didn't add anything to my perception when I watched this.

 Re: Up
This is one of Pixar's best films; miles better than Wall-E for me. This was very original just like Monsters Inc.; that seems to be a trend in the films Pete Docter directs. In my opinion, the whole movie is great, not just the first ten minutes. Dug is hilarious; I loved all of the dogs really. Just so many different elements came together to form such a great movie. If someone asked me what this movie was about before I saw it, I'd have said "a man who flies his house with balloons. But it is so much more.

WALL-E is a close second, yes. But Up takes the biscuit.

 Re: Up
It also panders with the bird Kevin, the joke about the Alpha dog having a squeaky voice which is run straight into the ground, not to mention the talking dogs is childish to begin with. This film, despite having a very mature character in Carl feels very kiddie in a time when Pixar was pushing its boundaries with Ratatouille and Wall-E. the two aspects that still make this a good film are Carl and his childhood idol turned evil.

 Re: Up
Up is great but Ratatouille is easily Pixar's best. (Haven't seen Inside Out yet.)

Oh yes, Ratatouille is Pixar's true masterpiece. Every frame is a work of art, which is the only computer animated film that I think achieves that mark.

 Re: Up
Amazing score that does the heavy lifting here. The characters are great but Carl's transformation was a bit too rushed. Russell was amazing but Charles and the story with the bird did not land with me. But whatever it does with this is great. The departure from the falls was much better than the ending we get.
