 Re: Holy adjusted gross shit!
Air Force One's adjusted gross looks crazy. But then again, Harrison Ford was still huge at the time. It still does seem inconceivable that an original, star-driven, R-rated action movie would come anywhere near $300 million today, though.
Also really, really nuts from 1997: Liar Liar. I know Jim Carrey was a big deal at that point, but it was the fourth highest-grossing movie of the year, and Carrey was coming off of a significant disappointment in The Cable Guy. Bruce Almighty is pretty crazy, too. Even at his biggest, Adam Sandler never had anything as massive as Carrey's biggest hits.

Another one:
Pearl Harbor adjusts to 286 million. About the same size as Inception, but many thought it disappointed back then. Also Armageddon is at 350 million now, The Island adjusted is still smaller than Pain and Gain.

 Re: Holy adjusted gross shit!
Executive Decision was a solid hit - especially considering the biggest star (at the time) gets killed off early on! Broken Arrow stole its thunder though, coming out a few weeks earlier.
Bruce Almighty was an even bigger WTF than Liar Liar because in 2003, Carrey's star status had cooled somewhat compared to 97.

 Re: Holy adjusted gross shit!
I disagree though,
Truman Show adjusts to 218 million and was a his first harder sell to dramedy Man on the Moon had awards buzz and did solid for what it was Me Myself and Irene- 138 million (Pretty Hard R, in line with most R rated comedies today) The Grinch- 392 million.
And then the Majestic quietly flopped. In all seriousness he did a lot of different kinds of films outside of his comfort zone that all did great outside of the Majestic. Then he comes back with a straight up comedy which he hadn't done in almost 4 years, and hadn't been in a movie in 2. It also had great marketing.

This isn't an adjusted stat... just thought it was insane that Titanic 3D made $343 mil WW. Fuck me.
Also, Nemo is more beloved than Shrek. Fact.

 Re: Holy adjusted gross shit!
Shrek just brought in the demograhics. After Shrek 1, there was no demographic you could be in and be thought uncool to want to see Shrek 2. Pixar's films might be slightly better (subjective obviously), but there was still that family fluff element that took out all the disestablishment extremist types, the types that would appreciate Shrek more.

 Re: Holy adjusted gross shit!
The Waterboy adjusts to 280 million and a 68 million opening. Inflation has certainly made Sandler look more consistent then he really has. Even the first Grownups would be his 7th biggest film adjusted.
Lethal Weapon 4- 227 million. And I remember people calling that kind of a letdown as well when it first came out. But LW was clearly bigger than Die Hard ever was.
2001 was crazy. Tomb Raider's opening adjusts to 69 million now.

A $69 million opening for a film with that event status is very fitting.Angelina Jolie was really a big thing back then, hot in every meaning of the word. As for Sandler...it is the same as with the older Tom Hanks or Tom Cruise movies. The names used to be MUCH bigger draws than they are now. Not just their names, but generally...it was much easier for films to draw huge audiences just based on one name.

 Re: Holy adjusted gross shit!
Agreed, those kind of high concept comedies of the 90s just aren't around anymore. I think Yes Man or Tropic Thunder was probably the last one. The bigger comedies go for more realistic settings with fantastical situations, as opposed of the old school SNL style comedy films.
Even a film like This is the End is not extremely different. Maybe it's the humor has shifted to more everyday things.

I think the critical disappointment in that made people think it was a commerical disappointment for some reason. The film had a gross very similar to Armageddon, released just 3 years earlier, and another WWII blockbuster Saving Private Ryan. The 140m budget was REALLY big at the time so that helped cause the idea it was a disappointment. Also, people thought it would be the biggest movie of the sumer and it wasn't. Plus, the Mummy Returns had opened just a few weeks prior and had a bigger OW. But yeah, in retrospect, the film should have never really been considered a disappointment commerically (450m WW total on a 140m budget is good). Including video PH was a huge hit. I don't remember exact numbers but VHS and DVD combined for over 300m in sales domestic. The studios get a higher percentage of that too.

Pearl Harbour was HUGE in OS markets so I don't think its gross comes out as a big surprise to me. It was positioned to be the biggest thing that summer though the negative reviews in general killed its legs and then it was suddenly called a disappointment.

Sub 200m when 300m was expected by many. Plus Mummy and Shrek both beat it and later in the summer Rush Hour 2 would as well (not to mention Potter, LOTR and MONSTERS inc Personally it was one of my most anticipated films ever and ended up one of the all time biggest disappointments for me.

Waterboy was his first break out after Wedding Singer put him on the map. Much like Carrey following Ace Ventura with Mask. Each then followed up with another biggie - Big Daddy and Dumb and Dumber. If we ignore Batman Forever, both then had a disappointment follow - Little Nick for Sandler and Cable Guy for Jim. Though Nicky was a bigger bomb.

 Re: Holy adjusted gross shit!
I love[d] Pearl Harbor. Great movie, and any money it made was fully deserved. A proper Summer action blockbuster. They don't make them like that anymore. All Summer blockbusters feel overproduced due to CGI, and therefore they feel fake. Pearl Harbor felt real and expensive.

1993:
Cliffhanger: $165m Demolition Man: $114m Last Action Hero: $98m
Wow. Sly was on fire.
Then in 1994 he had The Specialist with $111m, and Arnie had True Lies with $285m. The 80s and 90s were both strong for Sly. Nice to know.
