Love Story is another film that could only have succeeded when it did. I was born in 1987 and I wasn't there. But I will say that my parents, who were both in high school when it came out, absolutely HATE it. They consider it an overrated piece of melodramatic crap, and I 100% agree. But from what I can gather, it was like the Titanic of its day.

I don't know if BOM's adjusted figure is accurate, because popular films played for months and were periodically reissued, so that entire amount may not be from its original run - that's especially important for 70s films because that was the Decade of Inflation.

The Jurassic Park sequels always seem to be lost in the shuffle too. Lost World adjusts to 407 million, and III 260 million.

An adjusted gross doesn't save a movie from being a disappointment. T3 didn't pass its budget domestically and only barely doubled its budget worldwide

Meet the Fockers was really huge. I never saw the movie theatrically but I was surprised when I first saw its gross on BOM.

I meant given the concept and Costner's starpower it could have done $200m. It wasn't a financial disappointment or anything like that. Also I do not believe it is a candidate for this list as its BO is not really WOW adjusted or unadjusted.

Robin Hood was a big hit back then. Second only for the year after T2.

MBFGW was just WTF - 2002 was just an epic year.

Spectacular.

Shriek 1 made 267m from a 40m OW. It was beloved by every demographic and actually cool to go and see no matter what age. It was the first animated film catering to all demos and without the kiddy feel. Pop culture reference may be derided now but were funny back then.

So everyone went back for more with the second. At the time I predicted a bullish 280m for shriek 2. It certainly demolished that mark.

Scary Movie was a huge surprise. It resurrected the parody genre on the back of the beloved Scream trilogy and out grossed every scream film.

And it was considered a big disappointment. Still one of Carrey's best IMO.

The Birdcage (229) and First Wives Club (194) were also huge off peak hits.

I don't think Shrek 2 was a fluke. I think Shrek was the most beloved animated film of modern times. I think PIXAR just works as more acceptable or digestible.

Having been grade school age when the first one came out, yes, I can attest to the fact that the first Shrek was huuuuge with kids at the time, and it only got bigger after it hit video/DVD. The increase Shrek 2 had is still insane, but it's somewhat explicable given that the first one went from "very widely beloved" in its theatrical run to "universally beloved" on video.

The adjusted totals of Meet the Fockers and The Spy Who Shagged Me are astounding. The Hangover: Part II, the closest thing we've had to those films in the realm of sequels to hit comedies, was considered to be pretty solid at around $255 million, but both of those top $300 million at current ticket prices. But then, appropriately enough, Part III followed the Little Fockers path of dropping precipitously from its predecessor.

It's little but it was marketed as a Seagal film, whose popularity was waning at the time. But it was nice to see Kurt as a solid A list draw in the mid 90s, Outside of Escape from LA and Captain Ron, He had about 8 solid action/thrillers hitsin a row.
