Re: The Tennis Thread - U.S. Open '09
I wasn't talking about the Nadal match, but the women semifinal and Serena's blowup. It's unfortunate the game ended that way, as Clijsters deserved the win in a terrific match. The second set especially was played at a very high level.

Re: The Tennis Thread - U.S. Open '09
Clijsters did play better throughout the match, but I've never seen a match end that way, especially a semifinal of a major tournament. So weird. I've really only seen the Jeff Tarango default at Wimbledon, and Jeff Tarango is no Serena Williams.

Re: The Tennis Thread - U.S. Open '09
What the hell... I thought those matches were postponed till sunday. That's the fucking crawl was showing when I was watching football all night. I didn't see one mention of Clijsters vs Serena. FUCK. I bet it was shown on fucking tennis fucking channel that a few thousand fuckers pay for...I'm so pissed. I'm so pissed to have to read about a result like that and not see it live. I'm pissed that Clijsters beat the Williams sisters. I think Hingis did that in a slam but then lost the final and I thought another person did it too but won the final. I'm pretty vague on that. for not getting to see it live and for serena losing albeit to a "defending" champion. I do like Clijsters happy attitude. I hope she wins the Open.

Re: The Tennis Thread - U.S. Open '09
The match was shown live on CBS.
Justine Henin beat both Williams' in the 07 US Open and won the final against Kuznetsova. In addition to Hingis, but I think Hingis lost to Capriati in the Aus Open final where she beat both Williams' previous to that.
The match was pretty high quality for a womens' match these days, Serena was making some silly errors, but Kim was playing well.
I'm sure CBS will show it ad nauseum tomorrow.

I'm sure CBS will show it ad nauseum tomorrow. Thanks Agent for your fast tennis facts!!Jesus. I'm sorry to beat this to death but when the heck did this play? Was it in the evening or before the end of the Nadal match that got shown? All I recall is that I watch Nadal paste Gonzalez around 1200 then it was raining so the men's doubles final was delayed and I started watching football and checked back in maybe around 4:00 and they were showing some JImmy connors re-run, so I'm totally dumbfounded as to when it was aired. Finally, I did watch a couple clips that ESPN has of the outburst and her post game conference. Serena was obviously out of line to be acting a fool to the linesperson even though footfaults are extremely rare to receive and on top of that during an extremely crucial point of a semifinal grand slam match. I think Serena handled herself well with the press afterwards and at least walked over to Clijsters and shook her hand. What a bummer way for her to end this tournament.

Re: The Tennis Thread - U.S. Open '09
The match started shortly after 9pm EDT, CBS showed the Ghost Whisperer and a bit of Numbers and then showed the match.
The Nadal match was completed in the afternoon at about 12 and it took 35 minutes. I was worried they weren't going to get any tennis in after that, but they did and we get probably the most controversial finish to a match in a major. Serena handled herself well, I do think it may have helped that she and Serena are friendly and by this I mean Kim and Serena, but that's a terrible way to end a GS Semi.

I agree it's quite high quality for a women game nowadays. Numerous 10+ stroke rallies, with deep and powerful shots back and forth. I hope CBS will replay it tomorrow for more people to see.

Nadal just got the worst beating he's suffered in a Grand Slam, 2-2-2, against Del Potro. It was tremendously impressive stuff from Juan Martin, and a bit lackluster from Rafa.

Great ending to the women's draw. That final moment on the court with Clijsters and her child and the trophy was cute as hell. Wozniaki was classy in defeat.
I'm not sure who I'm rooting for with the men. Federer is alright, a nice guy, but Del Potro would be a fresh story for tennis - shake things up a bit.

I was happy for Clijsters. It's a really great story and a personal achievement. I hope that Federer can win his 16th. I'd rather him make the new record unreachable than lose to one hit wonders.

Del Potro's performance this year has shown he is definitely not going to be an one-hit wonder. He is a threat on all surfaces.

Is he the next Djokovic or is he going to be a Nadal? I'm a bit shocked Federer lost this but he'll have more chances. Also, gratz to the Williams sisters for taking the doubles crown.

Re: The Tennis Thread - U.S. Open '09
A pretty amazing year for Grand Slams. Intense finals, and all the twists and turns in between (Nadal looked so good after Australia; then the shocker at French and the comeback of Federer to win French and Wimbledon to break the record, and he was back on top looking golden; then the upset at U.S.).

I like Del Potro's emotion. It's always nice to see an athlete cry tears of happiness after a victory.

Re: The Tennis Thread - Australian Open '10
The Australian Open is my least favourite major as well, but really that's due to the time difference more than anything else. The atmosphere, and the quality of matches seem top notch for this early in the season. Sharapova is already out of the tournament, and a big second round match is set with Dementieva taking on Henin, I'm looking forward to that one.

Can't believe Venus blew a 5-3 lead in the 2nd set. She sucks at Aussie & French Opens.
