Earlier this year the A&E Network bypassed a pilot and went straight to series with 'Bates Motel' for a 10-episode order.
Described as a prequel to Psycho, the series examines and explores the twisted relationship between Norman (Freddie Highmore) and his mother Norma (Vera Farmiga). Carlton Cuse (Lost) and Kerry Ehrin (Friday Night Lights) are executive producing.
The premiere date is unspecified in 2013.

Looks interesting enough, I'll go check it out when it premieres. Seems kind of a weird choice for Vera considering tv work would be beneath her

I feel like the show might be pretty good if Vera Farmiga agreed to do it, so I'll check it out at first.

I can't wait. The article about it in EW this week got me even more excited. I'm just sad we don't get A&E anymore. They stopped carrying it with the package we have for satellite. I'll have to watch it online or something.

Can't wait for it. Great time to be a horror/thriller fan for TV as you've got this, The Following, and the Hannibal Lecter series starting soon.

Certainly. A lot of horror-themed shows on the air right now. Keep 'em coming.

Besides the fact that The Following is so, so terrible.

OH MY GOD! This was AWESOME! Vera Farmiga is amazing and Highmore is great as well. So well-done! Farmiga better get an Emmy or something for this. I actually think she will.
Waiting a week for more will feel like torture.

I agree - the premiere was fantastic. Vera Farmiga was incredible and there were more than a few genuinely shocking moments.

I won't hesitate to say it's the best horror-themed show on TV right now after this pilot episode. I was never THIS crazy about The Walking Dead or American Horror Story and neither hooked me off the bat like this.

You haven't watched The Following though, which is way more violent than this show, at least so far. And the problem I have with this show is that it comes across as too much like a teen show during the high school parts and something about that seems beneath a show based on such a monumental film. Nicola Peltz is hot though

He never said anything about violence. The Following sucks so hard.

Re: 'Bates Motel' (Season 1)
I don't really care how violent it is personally. I did find it to have a nice dose in the pilot and I'm sure we'll have plenty more moments of it, though I assume they'll use them sparingly. I am interested in the story though and that's where they have me.

Not too bad. I like both Vera and Highmore's performances and the show having shades of Twin Peaks and American Horror Story
As far as pilot rankings as related to the discussion on hand
“Executive producer Carlton Cuse (Lost) has called Bates Motel a ‘contemporary prequel’ to Psycho“…what bullshit. Bowen calls this “an evasive way of saying the show runners have borrowed the elements from the film that suit them with little regard as to whether they logically belong in a contemporary setting that’s otherwise informed by the most successful shows of the last 20 years.
“Unsurprisingly, given this opportunistic grab-bag approach, Bates Motel exhibits virtually no feel for time or place.
Just noticed this: Check out the house-tour portion of the trailer and you’ll notice that Norman’s room is located in the wrong area of the second floor. In the 1960 film Vera Miles found it by taking a right at the top of the stairs as it was located across the hall from his mother’s large room. Now his mother’s large room has been subdivided and split into two — she has a smaller bedroom toward the front, and Norman’s small room is right to the left at the top of the stairs. So they messed with the original architecture.

Big deal. The show is taking the story and making it its own. I'm very interested to see where it goes.
