Good book, but they messed with it too much. Mediocre film.

Re: London Boulevard
The film does have this strange dynamic where there are two good movies--Movie A (a Mona Lisa style film with a gangster protecting and falling in love with a beautiful woman) and Movie B (a gangster fresh out of prison trying to stay free and clear despite bad influences around every corner)--and they try to blend them into one great movie, and the results are a tad mixed. But the acting is SUPER good. Colin Farrell is in top form, intense and charismatic. Ray Winstone is in his safety zone as a brutish, profane crime boss, but terrifying nonetheless. Keira Knightley is sexy and sells her character's sadness despite slightly thin writing. David Thewlis steals every scene he's in and seems to be having a ball with a bizarre character. And it's simply a lot of fun to watch. Great British Invasion tunes throughout. Sharp, attractive cinematography. And the ending, while feeling derivative of Layer Cake, is satisfying and jolting.

London Boulevard
Good film. Great choice of songs. Farrell acts well in a more London tone than his usual accent. This is the first time I haven't hated Keira Knightley in a movie. She did well. An ensemble really suits her - I can only tolerate her in small doses. Good story. Shame about the end of Farrell, but good performances by the ever-sexy Anna Friel, Ray Winstone and a bunch of other Brit-stars.
It could have had more filler to flesh out the film and allow absorption of the content. I felt that the movie only filmed the scenes that were integral to the story, so a bit of filler would have made it more well-rounded and enjoyable.
