Well I'm finally watching Season 3 of Gossip Girl and I'm loving it :P. I think the show definitely has the potential to do solid numbers in syndication.

I'm glad you're enjoying it, but it's getting abysmally low numbers in its first run. You really expect a serialized show like this to do well in syndication? I don't even know which channel would buy the rights for syndication. ABC Family is the only one that I can kinda see it buying, but the problem is they have shows of the same type that are way more successful and they're better off repeating them than buying GG or any other CW teen product.

Sure, that helped Heroes. ;)

ABCFamily has out-CW'ed The CW. CW can't even generate excitement (has it ever, anyway?) with their allegedly "target demo." Gossip Girl's renewal is based solely on CW fail.

The only CW shows I see as "on the bubble" at this point are "Hellcats" and "One Tree Hill," with "Nikita" being a possibility. Apparently the season finale of "One Tree Hill" was written as a series finale and the actors' contracts are up after this year.

The contracts for OTH have been expiring after each season for last 2 seasons I think. 2 years ago the show was supposed to have a 13 episode run to finish off the stories, but when CW's new shows bombed (some things never change) OTH got a greenlight for a full season and here it is - still going strong. Look at the latest midseason average index for OTH. It does 96% of what CW averages. 90210 and GG are at 87%. Smallville does 107% and Supernatural (the stepchild CW banished to Fridays) does 109% of CW's average viewership. Nikita does good, but it has TVD lead-in so that pushes it up. Without it it would probably be around what GG and 90210 are doing, which when it comes to picking shows isn't very good position to be in - you'll pick an older show if there's syndication money in it. And also Nikita looks very expensive, so why push a lower rated expensive show?

I think OTH has a fairly good chance to survive. As it stands CW already has two holes to fill next season - it needs a show to pair up with Supernatural on Fridays (despite some suggestions that they'll probably move Nikita there, I don't think those two shows would work together). And then there's that damn post ANTM slot where they fail at launching a show - a drama or reality it doesn't matter. It's like it's impossible to launch a show after ANTM. So that's two hours already and CW usually launches just two new hours every fall.

If they were to cancel anything more the first one to go would be Hellcats. I've been watching that show and while it was kinda fun at first it quickly went nowhere and I just can't see it attracting or holding its audience. And lately it has been posting season lows in a row I think. So that would be a third hour for CW to fill. If OTH goes, that's 4 hours. You see the problem - CW just can't afford to launch that many shows and still leave something for midseason. I think their development slate consists of 6 or so shows, few of which are genre and despite me liking that I don't think CW will suddenly go the genre route.

I'm thinking that witch show will get a pick up. Kevin Williamson produces and CW won't miss the opportunity to pair it with TVD and use from creator of TVD tagline. If anything it will give it at least some of the built in audience. Then that show with zombie sisters could be paired up with Supernatural (a show about two brothers gets a companion show about two sisters). Then there are two lawyer shows and two hospital shows. I'm guessing they will take one of each and try one post ANTM and keep the other for midseason.

CW screwed itself a few years ago when it decided to pick up "hits" like GG and 90210. They just dug themselves into a hole. They're basically in the same position like NBC. They need to improve like 90% of their schedule, but they just cannot do that financially.

I'd say "Secret Circle" and "Awakening" are locks for a pickup. I am hoping and praying they pick up "Hart of Dixie" because I really enjoyed the script. "Cooper and Stone" is fucking awful and I hope they don't order it to series.

I see them gradually clearing off their schedule. This year "Smallville" and likely at least one or two of the "Nikita" / "Hellcats" / "One Tree Hill" pack will be off the air. I honestly think next year is going to be the end of "Gossip Girl" and probably "90210" as well.

Also, in non-CW news, "Perfect Couples" is being pulled in early April.

"Heroes" had a HUGE backlash against it though, by the end of the series I'm pretty sure everyone hated it :P

That hasn't really happened with "Gossip Girl" for the most part, it still has a fanbase and the fourth season has been well-received thus far.

I agree that ABC Family is the network to beat in this demographic though, as exhibited by the huge numbers for the "Pretty Little Liars" finale last night.

Doesn't Gossip Girl do insanely well in some female demographic to whom The CW is constantly catering?

Depends how you look at it. Their target demo is females 18-34. GG does well there compared to their other shows (I think it's only second to TVD). But the thing is that if somebody wants to advertise to that public then CW is definitely not their first choice. ABC and FOX have shows that attract that same demo much better and as a bonus you get also viewers outside of your target demo. With CW what you see i what you get. And as we all agreed ABC Family kicks CW's ass when it comes to their target demo. And then if you really want that narrow demo then some other female centric cable stations might be a better way to go, no? General public still dismisses CW as a stupid network due to their branding. Some companies possibly even avoid CW because of that despite the fact that their demo might be the one they want to advertise.

Luckily Dawn is gone after this season and I've read some guy from ABC is taking the top spot. Hopefully he decides to rebrand the network. That awful green needs to go first.

Monday's Pretty Little Liars did as following (it was a season finale I think so it probably had a slight bump, but it was getting great numbers throughout its run):

Pretty Little Liars (ABCF, 8pm)
- 3.635 million viewers
- 2.3/4 HH
- 1.3/4 A18-49
- 3.0/9 W18-34
- 5.0/18 T12-17

These are the last few Gossip Girl ratings:

Gossip Girl (February 7th)
- 1.622 million viewers
- 1.1/2 HH
- 0.8/2 A18-49
- 1.1/3 A18-34
- 1.8/5 W18-34

Gossip Girl (February 14th)
- 1.321 million viewers
- 0.9/1 HH
- 0.7/2 A18-49
- 0.8/3 A18-34
- 1.3/4 W18-34

Gossip Girl (February 21st)
- 1.567 million viewers
- 1.0/2 HH
- 0.8/2 A18-49
- 1.0/3 A18-34
- 1.5/4 W18-34

Gossip Girl (February 28th)
- 1.386 million viewers
- 1.0/2 HH
- 0.7/2 A18-49
- 0.8/3 A18-34
- 1.4/4 W18-34

In the beginning of the season GG was getting 2.0 in W18-34, but it has been all downhill from that point. The sooner CW faces the clusterfuck it's in, the better. I'm just hoping the network won't close before Supernatural and The Vampire Diaries end their run.

But doesn't Gossip Girl go up against Pretty Little Liars? Or is that 90210?

Well, that explains the dip for 90210 being that they have the same audience, and with the lead-in being weaker it also helps explain the drop for Gossip Girl.

I think next season they should kick things off earlier like they did with Season 2. Get a head start before all of the other shows begin airing.

So now that PLL ended its run we should see 90210 and GG doing better? I don't think so.

Yeah, "90210" will now be going up against "Secret Life," which for some unknown reason is ABC Family's highest rated show.

Again, I don't think either one of them is in danger of cancellation this season. I do think next year might be the last year for both though - I think they'll at least give "Gossip Girl" a chance to wrap everything up like FOX did with "The OC."

I really hope The CW cancels "One Tree Hill." Just let it die, the cast doesn't even want to be on it anymore :P Same goes for "Brothers & Sisters" on ABC.

Also I forgot to add that if PLL effected 90210 and GG that much that would be evident in DVR viewing. Even that shrunk for both of those shows so obviously viewers didn't shift from live viewing to recorded. They just fled both shows.

Well to be honest GG wraps itself up every 4 or 5 episodes. I don't think there's any long revolving storyline that needs to be resolved, so in that regard I think CW can pull the plug on GG just a couple of episodes they need to and writers would have more than enough wiggle room to do what they want.

It's too late because people are so far behind on both shows and will now wait for DVD to catch up :P.

:

That's essentially what they did with "The OC" with season 4 - they announced it was ending in January when there were still six episodes left to draft and film so they were able to wrap things up. I can see the same thing happening to "GG"

If 90210 gets a fourth season, and I'm sure it will, I don't see why they'd end it there. They may as well go with the fifth season then so they can sell it for syndication.

Syndication or no syndication, not even CW can put up with 0.5 and under ratings. And 90210 will likely be hitting a lot of those this time next season.

Comedy Central renewed Futurama for 26 episodes! That's on top of the forthcoming 13 episodes this summer.

72 original episodes + 4 DVD films (16 episodes on CC) + 52 CC episodes = 140 episodes

Never thought we'd have almost double the new episodes of Futurama someday.

An interesting tweet:

At this time last year, NINE new scripted broadcast shows had already been renewed for season 2. This year, #RaisingHope still stands alone.

LOL. This year was a development dud.
