 Federal Government salaries
http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington ... ries_N.htmSome choice quotes: Quote: The highest-paid federal employees are doing best of all on salary increases. Defense Department civilian employees earning $150,000 or more increased from 1,868 in December 2007 to 10,100 in June 2009, the most recent figure available.
When the recession started, the Transportation Department had only one person earning a salary of $170,000 or more. Eighteen months later, 1,690 employees had salaries above $170,000. Quote: The growth in six-figure salaries has pushed the average federal worker's pay to $71,206, compared with $40,331 in the private sector.

 Re: Federal Government salaries
I wonder what the unemployment rate is in Washington D.C.? I am sure that, with salaries like that, more and more people will try and get some sort of government job. Not to mention it is hard as hell to fire such employees.

Most of DC is working-class black, though. The government employees shoot up the average income by probably 2.5.

Those are counted among the unemployed. The people who stopped looking are not counted. For all the different unemployment definitions and stats go here: http://www.bls.gov/lau/stalt.htm

 Re: Federal Government salaries
Always happens when left wing govt get in power.
They say they will go after the rich and business and than give federal employees ridiculous wage increases and benefits.

 Re: Federal Government salaries
This was happening under Bush too, I believe. Not sure how much of it is Obama's fault per se, but clearly it's hypocritical of the president to go after bankers and such for large compensation packages, while doling out huge increases inside the Beltway. The best quote regarding the hypocrisy of this criticism came from Michael Bloomberg: http://wcbstv.com/politics/obama.banks. ... 41065.htmlQuote: The mayor was so upset about the move -- and a suggestion that Wall Street bonuses be put in escrow, which means the money wouldn't be spent here, wouldn't help the city economy -- he responded with a proposal of his own for members of Congress.
"Maybe we should hold back their salaries for a decade or so and see whether the laws they pass work out," Bloomberg said.
