Chicago folks pretty much all went for Rio and established its lead from there on.

I'm not shocked that Rio won. I'm shocked that Chicago was eliminated first.

This leaves the door open for an easy Winter games win for a US City they want it in 2018, or will they wait to bid again for the summer games in 2020 (with competition likely coming from Cape Town and Rome)?

Congratulations to Rio, it will definitely be a very energetic games. Still not a huge fan of the ceremonies taking place in a different stadium than the athletics competition, but that can be easily overlooked.

I'd say 2020. I am not sure about Cape Town getting. South Africa has more problems than Brazil. Right now the cities up for are Boston, Denver, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Birmingham (now WTF are they on there), and New York again. I think Denver makes the most sense, although part of me would love to see Boston get it.

I've heard more discussion about Boston being the candidate city for the USOC in 2020 if they decide to go for it than for any other one. Denver I've heard about, but for a potential 2018 Winter Olympic Games bid.

Cape Town is not Rio de Janeiro and if they bid again, they most likely will not be in as good a position as Rio was this time. However the IOC loves breaking into new territory and with a strong bid, a good display of organization from the WC in 2010, and a weak competitor field for 2020, I can see Cape Town having a good showing. By 2032 they will get them.

I don't think Boston could handle the Olympics.

I think Boston could, they would have to spread things out to Providence, Foxboro, Worcester, etc but it is doable. What I heard about Denver is they pulled out of 2018 Winter and are thinking about Summer.

Pyeongchang shouldn't have much trouble getting the 2018 Winter after two consecutive heartbreaks.

If Toronto bids for 2020 as expected, I don't USOC will counter it with a city of our own to split the votes, as Toronto stands an excellent chance of getting it considering its strong showing in the 2008 bid, and the competition elsewhere is also pretty strong with Rome and Delhi. I will have a better feeling of Capetown's chance after the 2010 World Cup.

Competition looks to be Annecy, France; Munich, Germany, and I keep on hearing about a bid from possibly Harbin or Changchun, China. Zaragoza, Spain is also contemplating a bid. It would be the best time for Pyeongchang to win, third time bidding, 10 years since last Asian games. One thing might hold the IOC back, past world cup and world championship events in that region have been horribly attended and may not instill confidence in the area's organization and enthusiasm, yes I know the Olympics are completely different, but I imagine they'd weight that in their decision.


I am not sure Toronto will bid, maybe if it doesn't get the Pan-Am Games in 2015, but if it does, I'm not sure if the IOC would give the games to a country that's already busy organizing a junior olympics if you will. Also it would only be 10 years after Vancouver 2010, and it's hard to imagine the IOC giving a country the population of Canada, 4 Olympic games in the span of 44 years. 2028-2032 probably the best shot for a Toronto bid.

Delhi, must see how their organization of the 2010 Commonwealth Games before an Olympic bid is contemplated.
