Yeah most incumbents usually increase their lead in their 2nd elections.

However with young people going back to going being lazy as usual and Black people not being so enthusiastic and with the republicans likely to really come out in huge numbers, the 2012 election will likely be a 49%-51% election imo.

It will likely be as bitter as the 2004 election...

That's pretty uncommon, isn't it?

Eh? You've never heard of one-term presidents?

The more I read this, the sillier it becomes. You do of course realize that the Democratic party is essentially split down the middle on health care? That regardless of what the Republicans want, the Democrats can't figure out what it is they want?

Congress, on both sides of the isle, is an embarrassment, a shamockery. The Democrats, lead by the fearless idiocy of Nancy Pelosi, are no better here. Their failures are different, but just as potent.

I thought you were implying he'll still win in 2012. Which he probably will, unless he eats a baby on national TV and unemployment is in the double-digits two years from now. Plus, do you think we'll be out of Afghanipakistan/the conflict will end by 2012? I can't see him shitting the bed in four years nearly as bad as LBJ did in the public eye with a not-nearly-as-bad war going on.

Bush senior won in Iraq and still lost the election.

I think Republicans have a real shot at winning in 2012, yes.

The GOP can't win in 2012 unless the world economy is still in the shitter. They are exactly like the British conservatives after 1997, reduced to a rump living off nationalism and Xenophobia. Until somebody pulls them away from the rump and towards the centre they are doomed to be a minority party.

Right now they are even more beholden to their extremes then the Dem's where during the haydays of Moore doc's and Moveon.org activism.

true but they still got 59 million votes in the last election.

Sure Obama got 69 million but lets say you take away the one time vote (some Blacks and most Young) and may add a few to the conservatives (a ton of angry people).

You could easily have a close election and I still say Obama will win but it will be very close.

No way is Obama heading to a 1984 Ronald Regan landslide...

perhaps however I think his 2nd term could be very good for him though.

The next election I would say North Carolina will certainly go back to the GOP and Florida will likely Switch as the margin there was still quite close for the number of votes.

Ohio as well due to people just being angry.

However, 2012 is far away and many things can happen.

Many saw Obama as the 2nd coming but he isn't but one things for sure. He is still way better then Bush by a factor of a 1000...

It's never safe to assume your party is going to win. If the democrats believe Obama has a 2nd term locked up (many thought so even before he even won the 1st), they're going to regret it. The democrats are in power now because the people wanted change, and decided to give the democrats a chance to prove themselves. In politics, this isn't going to happen again. Obama, as well as Congress, have more to prove and get done than a normal party that just gained power. And so far, it hasn't been easy. And it's just stupid to point fingers and begin blaming the republicans. Whether or not they are some of the cause of the problems, it does absolutely nothing and people have been tired of the blame game for years now.

I'm sort of in the same boat as Magnus. I'm just looking at the status quo and where it'll lead to. The Republicans need to move to the center and get a figurehead that isn't too oily or stupid. Lots of people aren't happy with Obama (most for the wrong reasons, but there are plenty of good reasons to be pissed at him), the good majority don't like Congress (nobody likes Congress, anyway), and an even greater majority don't like the Republicans (no need to explain this one). It's all about options.

yeah 2012 election likely will be a bitter fight with a lower turnout for sure.

Also, now Obama really is getting me angry (well not really, I live in Canada, but whatever) :funny:

Quote:
WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama used only-in-Washington accounting Wednesday when he promised to overhaul the nation's health care system without adding "one dime" to the deficit. By conventional arithmetic, Democratic plans would drive up the deficit by billions of dollars.

Like come on...

You have like many uninsured people, many who are poor and perhaps sick who came on the govt plan and it won't cause pressure on the federal govt???

Just curious - when people say "republicans need to move to the center" what exactly do you mean?

Um, they either want a Regan or an Eishenhower style Republican.

Eishenhower would be a democrat though today..

Really get away from xenophobia and such and go back to lower taxes and less govt thing that they had going in the 1980's.

Yeah it appeared Americans in the last election embraced Govt in the last election and that they want the govt to do more for them and such.

However it appears that was never true or attitudes have changed.

yeah the politician mix that Eishenhower had over his term really appeals to many conservatives, independents and centrists today.

Do you have a point to make or are you just bashing democrats? Because your response really doesn't address my point at all.

Limited government doesn't seem to be what the republicans have in mind any more either, based on Bush's 8 years!

The intention of my post was in no way to knock Democrats, rather to knock Nancy Pelosi (a fool) and Congress as a whole (an embaressment). I think you are misinterpreting my post.

As to addressing your post: You made no point, only a post that is steeped deeply in emotion and clouded by political affiliation. The conformity bit is not accurate, nor worth addressing, and the 'giving in' bit proves that our visions of how a president should operate are vastly different. Luckily, Obama clearly sides with me on this one, as he recognizes the reprocussions of governing through division.

A singular point of view can yeild many positives, but don't be so arrogant as to assume a different point of view holds no merit.

Not being silent when shouts of "Terrorist!" and "Kill him!" go around. I mean, really, that doesn't need to be explained, does it?

As for taxes and limited government, not happening. Well, lower taxes for the wealthy can happen again.

Well everyone would like lower taxes, however many people in the past did not use to complain so much about taxes because well they use to trust the govt more.
