On Friday July 11th, 2009, Ireland passed the Defamation Bill by one vote. One of the aspects of this bill would make it illegal to criticize religion… any religion under penalty of fines up to 25,000 Euros. That is the equivalent to nearly $35,000........

Full story at the link. I'm so screwed now, I see them having anti-blasphemy police out and this occuring.

Me: (Drops hammer on foot) JESUS FUCKING CHRIST!
Police: 25,000 Euro please
Me: Fuck!

Any economic and social progress Ireland has made has now been turned back.

Ironically its probably the shitty economic state that caused them to make this law. It was in the constitution but they had no law to enforce it. They figured it would cost to much money to hold a referendum to remove it and it would be easier to insert a law. I can't wait till the first court case. My money is on somebody's worship of brightly coloured plastic bags being insulted.

I think we grabbed onto the UK and refused to let go until they allowed both of us in.

I guess it's only fair when other european countries put religious leaders in jail for criticizing the gay lifestyle.

Maybe these countries should invest in actual freedom of speech instead of trying to curtail speech regardless of which way it offends.

Yeah, seriously. We're not talking the Phelps clan here, who routinely harass people and usually get away with it because they're all scumbag lawyers. Even that Swedish pastor who said something anti-gay and got in trouble with the law was disgusted when he found out those freaks were making him out as a free speech martyr. This is like pre-Victorian era.
